The types of flooring available at Winegar & Sons Floorcovering in Kingsport are as extensive as the years of dedicated customer service the family-owned business has provided, making it one of the premier regional flooring suppliers for 31 years.

Wayne Winegar, a Kingsport native and the Winegar & Sons founder, has lived and worked through several decades of progressively changing floor trends since his career began as a carpet salesman in 1974.

Wayne said that, in the 1960s, the only type of flooring available had been high/low patterned scroll carpet which came in either green or gold. By the time the 1970s rolled around and he got his start in the industry, high/low shag carpeting was in style and "people started adding a lot of color on their floors at that time."

The 1980s saw a divergence to textured and plush carpets, popular in the colors corn flower blue and dusty rose. In 1983, Wayne and his wife, Daphine Winegar, opened their own floorcovering store.

By the 1990s, there was a significant shift from carpet to hard surfaces like hardwood, laminate and ceramic tile flooring, Wayne said. In 1995, when his sons Curtis and Alan Winegar joined the business - creating Winegar & Sons - the family flooring cooperative was already seeing past customers return for the removal of their carpets and installation of new hard flooring.

At the turn of the 21st century, resources expanded still further in the flooring market to include more hardwood and luxury vinyl tile and planks - these are the newest and most long-lasting kinds of flooring available today. Carpets are making a comeback too, Wayne said, only now they come in soft, silky luxurious brands.

In recent years, past customers have returned to Winegar & Sons for a third time, seeking the best product offered in the flooring industry for installation in their homes at the most reasonable price, and with the quality service they've come to expect.

"Folks are upgrading," Wayne explained. "It used to be all about price, [but] now people are looking for quality, better floors... for the last time."
