Many of us are spending a lot more time at home than in years past. And if you've noticed dust bunnies, streaky windows or that pile of clothes that keeps getting higher, now's a great time to clean house.
We spoke to Taryn Williford, the lifestyle director at Apartment Therapy, about how to deep clean any space.
Williford says figuring out what you want to get done and why is the first step. "Step back, zoom out and figure out your goals and really get your mindset into shape," she says. Maybe it's a nightly wipe downs of kitchen counters, a weekly clean of the bathroom or a monthly deep clean of your whole house. Identifying what you want ahead of time makes it easier to get down to it.
Before you start deep cleaning, do some basic tidying up. Remember the maxim, "A place for everything and everything in its place." Williford says when everything is where it should be, it saves a lot of time when you actually start cleaning.
And you can arrange your stuff according to how you use it. She says she remembers a comment a reader left at the end of an article on Apartment Therapy: "Don't change your habit, change your habitat." Williford says that helped her realize that it was OK to put a hamper in the living room, if that was where she was most likely to remove her socks. "I realized I can kind of choose to design my home around my life, instead of designing my life around my home."
You need an all-purpose cleaner, a disinfectant and a window cleaner, Williford says: That all-purpose cleaner will work on most surfaces in your home. The disinfectant will attack germs in places like inside the toilet or on the kitchen counter. And the window cleaner is formulated to make sure that it doesn't leave streaks or deposits.
She says you don't even need these products to be specialty label cleaners you can use vinegar (cuts through mineral deposits), baking soda (great for dissolving grease and oils), and dish soap (perfect for bathroom tiles or stained tubs).
A few microfiber cloths will do nicely, as well as a scrub brush, a mop and a vacuum or broom. She says you may also need a duster (or you can improvise with a sock!).
Williford also keeps handy a razor blade (to scrape off something that's stuck), a cocktail pick (to get to tiny crevices) and squeegee (for glass shower doors and windows).
Williford suggests starting with the kitchen and bathroom. "They're the most important rooms to clean and to clean properly," she says. Make sure you clean all counter tops, the front of the fridge and cabinets and even trash cans. Go clockwise so you don't miss any surfaces or furniture.
Another rule of thumb is to go top to bottom. So, for example, in the bedroom, clean the light fixtures and the fan before stripping the beds. Williford learned that lesson the hard way when she first started by taking off all the bedsheets. "All the dust would fall on my bare mattress!"
Make sure to dry clean before you wet clean. For example, you want to dust your blinds first before using your all-purpose spray. "And the reason for that is, if you start straight in with your wet cleaners and you haven't dusted that surface, you're going to end up getting all that gunk on your rag and you realize, 'oh, this rag is filthy' and you end up having to switch out rags more often. It's just really not efficient," Williford says.
Finally, sweep or vacuum the rugs and floors and then mop.
Williford says getting into a routine helps make deep cleaning less intimidating. Set a schedule for daily, weekly and monthly cleaning tasks.
Daily tasks might include picking things up, cleaning kitchen surfaces, doing those dishes and cleaning the shower. Weekly tasks might include cleaning the bathroom, dusting surfaces all over your home and washing sheets and towels.
Nothing compares to the feeling of a squeaky clean home, Williford says. "When the kitchen's clean, it makes cooking that much easier. When the sheets have been washed, it makes getting to bed on time easier," she says.
A clean home can positively impact your health, your sleep and your hobbies. "A perfectly clean home really makes you feel like you can do anything!" she says.

White vinegar is extremely acidic, and that is what makes it such a good natural cleaner. It can dissolve stubborn watermarks, soap scum, and other nasty build-ups in no time at all and doesnt damage the environment. Dirt, dust and grime gather on your windows - indoors and outdoors - reducing natural light and blurring the view.Express.co.ukreveals how to clean your windows with white vinegar.
If you look at the eco-friendly window cleaning products on the market, lots of them will be made with white vinegar.
White vinegar is known for leaving your windows shiny and water-mark-free.
However, its important to note that while white vinegar has some antibacterial properties, it cant kill all bacteria and viruses it encounters.
For this reason, you should probably clean your windows with something stronger first and treat white vinegar as a finishing touch.

Take a lint-free cleaning cloth or paper towel and rub the vinegar into the window in a circular motion.
Make sure you work quickly, as taking too much time can leave streaks.
Use a microfiber cloth to dry the window, but work in straight vertical lines from the top to the bottom rather than using a circular motion.
Dry the window as quickly as you can to avoid streaks
Dont use a tea towel or regular cloth, if you dont have a microfiber cloth you can simply use a kitchen towel or paper towel.

A motorist disqualified for dangerous driving was caught on a road miles from home collecting equipment for his window cleaning business.
Paul Simon Campbell, 29, had been banned and given a suspended prison sentence last year after leading police on a high speed chase around Colwyn Bay.
But he ignored the three-year disqualification and was caught in his Renault van by Cheshire Police near Chester heading towards North Wales.
Today a judge at Caernarfon Crown Court said he had been "stupid" and activated part of his suspended sentence and gave him a further term for driving while disqualified. He must serve a total of five months and two weeks in prison.
The court heard Campbell had been caught on September 28, 2019 after going the wrong way around a roundabout and being pursued by police.
Last February, Caernarfon Crown Court heard Campbell admit dangerous driving. He was given a 12-month prison term, suspended for 18 months, and banned from driving for three years.
But today the same court was told that Campbell had been stopped by Cheshire Police on the A550 near Chester heading towards North Wales on September 27, 2020.
He told the officers he was disqualified and had no insurance.
Campbell, of Kensington Avenue, Old Colwyn, said he ran his own window cleaning business and was collecting second hand equipment.
He was arrested and charged with driving while disqualified, having no insurance and failing to comply with a suspended sentence order.
Sarah Yates, defending, said Campbell's behaviour had been "unimpressive" and he is extremely remorseful.
She said: "He was trying to start a window cleaning business. In doing so he made the silly mistake of driving his vehicle to pick up some equipment." He has two children and a stepchild to support.
The judge told Campbell he was turning his life around and had made progress towards being rehabilitated.
She jailed Campbell for four months of his original sentence and a further one month and two weeks for driving while disqualified. There was no separate penalty for driving without insurance.

The Cleaning Robots market provides a detailed outlook on sales and trends forecast for 2020-2026:
As the world continues to deal with COVID-19, economies are moving into recession, under multiple adverse factors, the GDP of European and American countries in the second quarter suffered a historical contraction. At an annualized rate, the US GDP fell by 32.9% month on month, while the overall GDP of the euro zone fell by 12.1%.
Moreover, the economic prospects of Europe and the United States in the third quarter under the epidemic situation are hardly optimistic. The resumption of work and production not only brought economic data back, but also triggered a rebound in the epidemic situation. At present, the United States is still the 'epicenter' of the global epidemic. The total number of confirmed cases has exceeded 4.8 million, and the epidemic situation in some European countries has also rebounded. Affected by this, more than 20 states in the United States have announced the suspension or withdrawal of part of the economic restart plan. Britain and Italy have also decided to extend the state of emergency. The rebound of the epidemic situation has posed considerable risks to the economic prospects of Europe and the United States. In the second quarter of this year, US GDP shrank by 9.5% on a month on month basis, or 32.9% at an annual rate, the largest decline since the 1940s. Data show that the sharp decline in personal consumption is the main drag on the U.S. GDP growth in the second quarter.

The bathroom can be one of the most germ-filled rooms in the house. Even when the room looks neat and orderly, germs can be lurking everywhere. Here are some strategies for giving the bathroom a good, old fashioned deep cleaning.
Start with the shower. Its best to start at the top with the showerhead. Fill a plastic bag with vinegar and place it over the showerhead, using a rubber band to hold it in place. Leaving it overnight, remove it in the morning and run the shower to rinse it. The showerhead should be as clean as a whistle. Clean the tub and tile with your bathroom cleaner of choice and wipe with a microfiber cloth. If you have a shower door(s), make a paste of baking soda and vinegar and rub the mix with a sponge on both sides of the door and inside the track. Let sit for 30 minutes to an hour and rinse. Put the shower curtain and liner in the washing machine on delicate with detergent and a small amount of bleach. Spin dry both items on low. Clean the shower curtain rings by soaking them in the sink with dish detergent and a splash of bleach. Now your shower will be fresh and clean.
Tile, countertop, walls and ceiling. A build-up of soap and even dead skin cells can be on all of these surfaces. Gross, but true. Spray all of these areas with an all-purpose cleaner. Turn on the shower and run the water until it causes steam for at least five minutes. Then shut off the shower and leave the room, closing the door behind you. Let the steam do its work for at least 20 minutes. Then wipe down all surfaces with a clean cloth. Use a microfiber mop to reach the high spots.
Dont forget the grout. Grout is porous and can be a haven for bacteria. Using a toothbrush and bleach, scrub all the grout, especially those that may be discolored. Let the bleach sit for a few minutes and rinse with hot water. For those that do not like to use bleach, hot water and vinegar will do the trick too, but leave it on for at least an hour before rinsing. Open the window to keep fresh air coming into the room, if you choose to use bleach.
Save the best for last (not really!) the toilet. Pour a full cup of baking soda into the toilet and let it sit for 10 minutes. Using a toilet brush (my favorite is one that IKEA sells for $1.99), scrub and clean all areas of the toilet and then flush. Dont forget to clean the toilet brush. Poor bleach over a sink onto the brush works best, but if youd prefer not to use bleach, vinegar and hot water can be a suitable substitute. Using a Lysol wipe, clean the seat and all of the outer parts of the toilet, including the base. Then wash down with a rag with hot water and dry.
Wash the hand towels. Its best to wash your hand towels on the sanitizing setting, if your washing machine has that setting, especially during the pandemic. Replace hand towels every few days to avoid the spread of bacteria. Clean the towel bar as well.
Having a clean bathroom helps keep bacteria at bay and you and your family healthy!

Growing out your beard for the new year doesn't mean that you have to go full scruff -- a beard trimmer can keep things even and clean up around the edges. Since I can't grow my own facial hair, I enlisted the help of my boyfriend, who's been proudly rocking a full beard since 2015, to come up with a list of the best beard trimmers for the job.
As the inventors of the first electric hair clippers, Wahl certainly knows what they're doing when it comes to grooming. This trimmer, which is adjustable to six positions between 1.5 and 13mm, comes with four interchangeable heads -- a precision detailer, a dual shaver, a stubble blade and a T-blade -- as well as six guides; three for stubble and three for precision trimming. The trimming blades are finely ground to produce finer teeth that give precise results for all trim lengths.
And with a single charge delivering three and a half hours of cutting time, this beard trimmer is the most low-maintenance of the bunch.
The Remington Vacuum Beard & Stubble Trimmer 6000 is for anyone who's ever unsuccessfully tried to clean up all of those little trimmed beard hairs around the sink, or for anyone who's been yelled at for those unsuccessful attempts.
With a high-velocity motor and fan blades, this beard trimmer has an adjustable length comb, 11 length settings from 2 to 18mm and a vacuum system that captures up to 95% of trimmed hairs as you cut. The stainless steel blades are also self-sharpening, so when you use the trimmer, it's like the first time, every time.
If you're rocking a short beard this Movember, the Brio Axis Beard and Hair Trimmer is for you. Designed for stubble and tight beards of up to 6mm, this ceramic-bladed trimmer is ideal for cutting straight lines and getting into difficult-to-navigate facial areas while eliminating the friction that causes bumps and razor burn.
It comes with three removable guards, a cleaning brush and lubricating oil for a smooth glide across your face.
If you're bearding on a budget, Gillette has you covered with their all-purpose Styler -- a trimmer, edger and shaver all in one.
The package includes three comb attachments (2mm, 4mm and 6mm) that you can use to customize your beard length and a shaving attachment that works with any Gillette 5-blade or SkinGuard razor refills, so when it comes time for a close shave again, you're ready to go. The trimmer itself is also waterproof and shower-safe.
Combining precision and portability, the Braun Beard Trimmer BT7240 is one of the most efficient, and fastest charging, beard trimmers out there -- just 1 hour of charging delivers 100 minutes of cordless trimming.
The trimmer comes with short-, medium- and long-beard trimming combs from 0.5 to 20mm and has a precision dial that lets you choose from 39 different length settings in 0.5 mm increments. It also has AutoSensing technology that reads your beard thickness 13 times per second and adjusts the power of its motor automatically to ensure an even trim without a lot of effort.
The Wahl Aqua Blade Rechargeable beard trimmer is a multi-purpose tool that you can use on a wet beard or in the shower. The grooming kit comes with 12 comb attachments that let you maintain beard lengths from 1.5 to 25mm, two precision detail attachments for sharp edging, and a nose trimming attachment for cleaning up rogue nose hairs. And everything is neatly packed into a soft travel case that you can take with you on the go.
Remington brings advanced technology into their Smart Beard Trimmer, an intuitive tool that memorizes your previous beard length settings and senses the level and thickness of your facial hair to adjust the motor and trimming speed as you trim.
The motorized comb is fully controlled by a digital touch screen and programmed with 175 different length settings that adjust in 0.1 mm increments from 0.4 mm to 18mm. And with its lithium power, it has cordless capabilities that last for 50 minutes after a full charge.

Roy Swarzak
By Isaac Ray
A man was arrested after falsely identifying himself as a contractor and accepting thousands of dollars to remodel a Coral Springs home, never returning to finish the work.
The victim told Coral Springs Police they hired a man named Roy Swarzak, 64, of Pompano Beach, in July of 2020 to remodel two bathrooms in their home located at the 4100 block of NW 88th Ave. The contract, dated July 17, stated that Swarzak agreed to perform the jobs for $8,000, of which $4,000 was to be paid upfront. Records show Swarzak cashed a check for $4,000 in advance of his work.
The victim, who lives in New York, had her sister hire Swarzak and oversee the alleged botched remodeling. She said he began working on both bathrooms soon after receiving his down payment. The work, however, was quickly deemed unsatisfactory, and Swarzak never returned to complete the job.
The victim provided officers with photos of her unfinished bathrooms as well as sworn testimony and identification of Swarzak.
Upon investigation, records obtained by CSPD showed Swarzak never applied for any permits and never has held a contactors license. After concluding their investigation into Swarzaks work at the home, claims, and background, a warrant was issued for his arrest.
On January 7, Swarzak was arrested and later released on a $2,500 bond.

The budget includes installing 3D printing software and turning one of the classrooms into a lab. It supports a proposed two-year adaptive manufacturing certificate program, which would allow students to start a job with an annual salary of $68,000.
The salary estimate prompted faculty representative Mayra Cruz to raise concerns about how the program would close equity gaps.
We want to focus on how this allocation would help advance these opportunities [for marginalized groups] historically, and not just one year back, Cruz said.
She said she wanted to hone in on which groups this development would affect.
I think weve already [gone] up and above on helping many different groups, said Mark Appio, department chair of Design and Manufacturing Technologies. This is another step on that work being more effective for members of those groups to get higher paying jobs.
Appio has worked with underrepresented high school students on other adaptive manufacturing projects.
These programs have been highly successful, since theyre very hands-on, Appio said. They have always been extremely strong in representing students in these underrepresented communities all over the state.
Randy Bryant, dean of CTE and workforce development, said that IPBT hadnt taken on this kind of manufacturing project of this budgetal size in the past two years.
DMT is the only program thats come forward with a project, other than maintenance funding that is only $60,000, Bryant said.
Lisa Markus, a faculty representative, discussed the potential popularity of these programs.
We also need to consider student demand for these courses, Markus said. If I could get a job with only a certificate and make $123,000, Im not sure why Im teaching.
