5 design things to do week of Nov 2 - 8 - KCRW

PHILADELPHIA and SPOKANE, Wash., Nov. 02, 2020 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Hill International(NYSE:HIL) (Hill), the global leader in managing construction risk, announced today that the Spokane Riverfront Park U.S. Pavilion project has won the Design-Build Institute of Americas (DBIA) 2020 Project of the Year and Best in Design Architecture Awards. DBIA presented the awards at their virtual awards ceremony on Thursday, October 29. Hill provided owners representative services for the Pavilion, which was delivered using the Progressive Design-Build method.

The Pavilion was originally constructed for the 1974 Worlds Fair. The project reimagined the iconic public performance and park space centered around a 150-feet-tall angled mast as the capstone for the wider Riverfront Park program. The completed Pavilion includes several wow factors to draw people to the park and offer them unique experiences. These factors include color-changing LED light blades attached to the Pavilions mast cables, the Elevated Experience (which provides visitors a high vantage point where they can survey the entire Riverfront Park), and dramatic fabric shade sails.

It was an exceptional experience managing the design-build process for this once-in-a-lifetime project, says Hill Vice President Matthew Walker, AIA, CCM, DBIA, who served as the Hill teams Project Manager. We achieved the clients goals for this iconic structure thanks to the collaborative nature of the progressive design-build delivery method. Early contractor and specialty subcontractor involvement and a nimble design-build team combined to accommodate numerous program changes during construction, which was key to the projects success.

Hill Construction Manager Lorraine Mead, PE, LEED AP, DBIA, concurred with Walker. Progressive design-build was key to making this project happen as the client envisioned. There were many stakeholders and many moving parts, but the commitment of the entire team to the project and the delivery method kept everything together, said Mead.

Prior to receiving the awards, the U.S. Pavilion also earned a DBIA National Award of Merit, Civic Assembly, as well as a 2020 National Achievement Award and 2020 Project of the Year Award from the Construction Management Association of America and the Landscape/Urban Development Best Project from Engineering News-Record (ENR) Northwest.

It's going to take some smart analysis to really figure out what happened in the 2020 election and where it leaves us as a country.

It's not particularly surprising that a Democratic president would be elected by a razor-thin margin (assuming Biden wins), while Republicans maintain control of the Senate and even pick up a handful of seats in the House.

But what is surprising is that this outcome so completely defied all predictions, expectations and polling data. It upended the assumptions of the mainstream news media and the political establishment.

So why were these results badly missed? And what does it mean? Who are, and will be, the winners and losers?

Was Donald Trump and his dominating presence responsible for the surprises? Did working class, middle America wake up and vote? Has the elite class been oblivious to the opinions and sentiments of about half of America? Has the left wing of the Democratic Party been chastised and humbled?

Does it mean further dysfunction and gridlock in Washington, D.C.? Or does it mean negotiation and compromise so both sides can point to accomplishments?

Will Trump attempt to continue to lead the Republican Party? Can anyone motivate the base like he has? If Trump is no longer striding across the political landscape, does his passionate base also leave the political stage and retreat into the shadows?

Will the various wings of the Democratic Party bicker, blame and fight for the soul of the party? And what is the soul of the Democratic Party?

I don't have answers to many of these questions, but they're worth asking and worth trying to answer. There could be opportunity ahead for the country, or there could be more dysfunction and immediate positioning for the 2022 midterm election.

"Wow, LaVarr, I was so surprised at your diatribe against the "monolith" Federal Government. The late R. Thayne Robson, professor of business economics at the University of Utah, always would lecture me on how important a role the federal government played stimulating our state after World War II. Hill Air Force Base, the IRS Center, BLM and the Forest Services all played roles in stabilizing the state economy after the war.

"Sure, when you think about it the federal government seems pretty big and awesome. But those 22 or so departments are just made up of talented workers that try to do their best every day. Hey, last week I received my monthly Social Security check. That didn't happen without some planning and hard work. I went to my mail box and received 40 pieces of mail over the last week, and it seems to come to my box correctly about 99 times out of 100. When I went up to Layton to eat a burger or some sushi, I'm not worried about salmonella because of the state/federal partnership in inspecting meat plants and restaurant.

"And when I heard those jets overhead fly by at nearly the speed of sound, I'm happy that those talented flyboys are in those cockpits instead of me. Take it from a former state budget analyst and economist for 33 years -- the Governor and Mayors have enough on their plates without worrying about all the other functions that the feds perform."

Parting Shot. It's great that Amendment G was approved, providing more flexibility in the use of state income tax revenue. But that doesn't entirely solve the state's tax imbalance. More needs to be done -- and it's a truly thankless job.

It's unfortunate that Prop 9 failed. It would have created checks and balances in Utah County's governance structure with a mayor and five city council members. Citizens would have been better represented than is the case with the current county commission. Civic-minded Utah County residents need to keep working on this.

Situated in the picturesque village of Vanhornesville west of Albany is a display of unique geologic features called tufa caves that along with the village itself are likely unknown to most people in the upstate area.

Located to the north of Route 20, Vanhornesville is accessible by State Highway 80, about a relaxed 90-minute drive from Albany, passing through farmland and woods as the roads traverse gentle hills. There are no signs along the way to announce the caves and only a couple of small ones within the village itself to point the way to the Outdoor Learning Center of the Owen D. Young Central School District, the preserve in which the caves have formed.

When most people think of caves, they are undoubtedly thinking of what geologists call solutional caves, such as the nearby commercialized Howe Caverns and Secret Caverns and the many wild caves that underlie the Helderberg and Cobleskill plateaus west of Albany.

Solutional caves are the product of the dissolving of carbonate bedrock such as limestone or marble by mild natural acids, most commonly carbonic acid. This acid forms when falling rain picks up carbon dioxide in the atmosphere or when pooled surface water absorbs the gas from decaying plant material.

It is an extraordinarily slow process and great solutional caves such as Mammoth Cave in Kentucky can take millions of years to form.

Other common cave types are fracture caves, caused by the gradual enlargement through erosion and weathering of natural joints in cliff faces; lava caves such as those in Hawaii formed by erupting volcanoes; and what are called talus caves, which are essentially enterable spaces between massive boulders that accumulate at the base of a cliff as a result of landslides. These caves are often scorned by sport cavers as just a pile of rocks, though geologists find they often contain complex and unique geologic features.

But tufa caves are relatively uncommon and are rarely very extensive, measured in feet rather than miles, unlike solutional caves that can extend for hundreds of miles. Nonetheless, like the tufa caves of Vanhornesville, they have their own attractions, one of which is that many of them require no special equipment to explore beyond a flashlight, and some are shallow enough that even that is unnecessary, though a helmet is recommended if an explorer wants to avoid bumping ones head.

And the very process by which tufa caves are made is of interest, for, unlike solutional and fracture caves that form in pre-existing bedrock, tufa caves develop from the chemical deposition of rock from flowing mineral-saturated water.

Anyone who has visited a commercial cave has learned the mnemonic regarding the calcite formations that appear there: stalactites there is a c for ceiling, and stalagmites there is a g for ground, indicating the places where they form.

It is an oversimplification to say that they form from dripping water, though that is certainly more accurate than the explanations of the ancient Greeks and Romans who believed that they were some bizarre form of life and were literally growing in the cave environment.

But in fact what appears to be pure water dripping from the cave ceiling is a solution of calcium bicarbonate containing dissolved carbon dioxide that stays in solution as long as that liquid is within the confines of narrow fissures through which it is being pulled downward through the bedrock by gravity.

When the droplets emerge into the cave environment, the decrease in pressure causes the solution to de-gas similar to what happens when the top is removed from a carbonated beverage releasing the carbon dioxide and depositing a minute amount of calcium carbonate on the ceiling or on the floor.

The agitation of that liquid as it flows down the cave wall or splashes onto the floor can also cause it to de-gas, much as shaking a carbonated beverage may cause the carbon dioxide to de-gas forcefully. Over long periods of time, the result will be the growth of stalactites, stalagmites, flowstone cascades, and other cave formations.

But under certain conditions, the stream in a karst aquifer a technical name for a solutional cave with flowing water may itself contain large amounts of dissolved calcium carbonate and is either super-saturated or under sufficient pressure that the degassing process does not occur until the stream emerges from the bedrock and flows over the surface.

At that point, the deposition of calcium carbonate calcite will occur as the pressure is released or the saturated water mixes with plain H20 and anything in the streams path may become thickly coated with these deposits which are known as tufa. The resultant rock tends to be relatively soft and crumbly and porous and often has the appearance of petrified shaving cream, sometimes containing mineral-coated sticks and twigs and leaf impressions.

Along the section of Route 146 that runs parallel to the base of Barton Hill near Gallupville there are a number of streams resurging from small caves at the base of the cliff and in times of low flow those streams will deposit tufa, which may appear as a white coating on rocks in the streambed or form pebbles and cobbles containing sticks and twigs and leaf impressions.

A more dramatic example of this deposition can be seen on the north side of Route 443 between Gallupville and Shutters Corners. An extensive section of the hillside is covered with conglomerate a naturally-cemented mass of rock fragments.

Here, long ago, tufa springs emerging from the cliff above cemented extensive deposits of glacial debris or drift and formed the conglomerate. These mineral springs eventually sealed themselves up and no longer flow. Today the conglomerate is fracturing and weathering away and may eventually cause a landslide onto Route 443.

The caves at Vanhornesville have formed a series of tufa deposits in a narrow valley that contains the Otsquago Creek. Saturated with calcium carbonate, the streams headwaters emerge from a series of springs and deposit the mineral.

At some point in the past, undoubtedly due to the melting of the glaciers at the end of the ice age, the stream carried a far greater volume of mineral-saturated water than it does today, resulting in the massive outcrops of tufa with their irregular, intricate openings: overhangs and tunnels and arches.

But unlike solutional caves, which can take millions of years to develop, these tufa caves are relatively young in geologic terms and are certainly post-glacial. Given the relative softness of tufa, the grinding effect of the continental glacier advancing over the landscape would have ground them away although there might well have been an earlier series of caves that the glacier destroyed.

The porosity of the tufa allows it to hold water and makes it a perfect environment for moisture-loving plants. The walls and nooks and crannies of the Vanhornesville caves thus are covered with mosses, lichens, various types of ferns, and rare wildflowers in spring.

Though the entrances to the numerous little caves appear mysteriously alluring, upon entering one, the visitor quickly understands the adage, What you see is what you get, and there is no danger of getting lost in an underground labyrinth.

But to hike in and around the caves with their quirky, mossy, storybook ambience is to experience a unique example of what nature can create with time and some simple chemistry.

The New York City Economic Development Corporation is set to commence construction of the Bronx Point affordable housing project on the edge of the Harlem River. The project will be constructed on a vacant piece of land along the river owned by the city of New York.

The project will include 542 affordable housing units, community and retail spaces, a new public park, and a museum dedicated to the history of hip-hop. The project is being developed by the New York City Economic Development Corporation in partnership with several city agencies whose main agenda is to address the lack of affordable housing and jobs in the low-income and rent-burdened areas of the South Bronx.

As opposed to typical mixed-use projects that are developed at market rates, Bronx Point affordable housing project was designed to specifically address the needs of the neighborhood including the inclusion of additional cultural and community amenities.

Thanks to its ambitious plan, the project recently won the Annual Awards for Excellence in Design from the Public Design Commission which is tasked with reviewing designs of projects in the city.

The project will include a U-shaped cluster of building towers on the edge of the river with community, retail, and museum spaces at the base. The mixed-use project was especially necessary given the fact that the city is trying to meet the high demand for affordable housing. In addition, the project ensures some equity in the distribution of job opportunities.

One thing that sets this project apart is just the scale of it. Were able to achieve so many of these benefits because the project is so large, said Douglas Land, real estate transaction senior associate at the New York City Economic Development Corporation.

The more than half a million square feet project will 50,000 square feet for the first permanent home of the Universal Hip Hop Museum and 10,000 square feet of retail space. The new museum will be dedicated to highlighting the story of the local creation of hip-hop.

Construction of Bronx Point affordable housing project to start next year - Construction Review

The Sioux Falls Food Co-op is about to get bigger as the grocer embarks on its multi-phased expansion plans.

Construction has already begun in the tenant space next to the Co-op's current location in the retail center at410 W. 18th St., just off of Minnesota Avenue.

Leadership for the grocery store wrapped up their capital campaign just last month after months of planning and years of anticipating a need for more room, general manager Patrick Sayler said.

"In the co-opworld it's not as simple as in regular retail world," Sayler said. "There are so many more stakeholders involved."

The Co-op was issued building permits this week for the project, a four-phase timeline expected to culminate in the spring. Early work won't be as disruptive to the store's operations because the walls are up between the two spaces, which will eventually become one single, larger space.

Crews have already finished demolition on the other side and will be able to finish most of the work before the walls come down, including building out a deli area nearly four times the size of the current section.

"It's quite an undertaking," Sayler said.

By the time the spaces are combined and the remodeling work is finished, each section of the Co-op will have more space. The largest expansions -- after the deli -- will occur in the meat department and frozen department.

The growth will also help the Co-op better meet the food needs of the growing number of aspiring home-based chefs, who are using quarantine during the coronavirus pandemicto branch out in their cooking, Sayler said.

"It seems like folks are really getting out of their comfort zone and trying out new and different things," he said.

Expanding the Co-op has been something the store's organizers have been planning since Sayler started in 2016.

"Pretty quickly after moving tothe space we're currently in, we realized we we're going to outgrow the space," he said.
