I decided to take a break from reading about the foreseeable health disaster for which nobody prepared ideally, in order to read about a different foreseeable disaster: the river floods now threatening low-lying areas of Fort McMurray. After much of the Alberta tarsands city was burned in a forest fire in 2016, there was a pell-mell effort to rebuild, and although some residents took insurance buyouts and said farewell, those who stayed felt strongly that, if possible, Fort Mac should be put back the way it was.

But at that time, everyone still remembered that the historic Waterways district and other parts of downtown had been flooded in 2013, and were likely to continue to be deluged periodically because of ice jams that form upstream from the city in the spring. The fire for even fire obeys the law of gravity, more or less had attacked the same low-lying areas with particular ferocity. At the time of the fire, Fort McMurrays own bylaws put strict floodproofing conditions on new building construction in the Waterways area. And the province was about to pass tough rules excluding new structures on known floodplains from disaster relief.

There was enormous pressure on city officials to act, so they came up with a plan. They would suspend their own floodproofing requirements for Waterways, let everyone rebuild there according to the less onerous pre-2013 standards, and construct a hypothetical demountable flood wall essentially a levee that could be assembled with a few hours notice and left in storage for most of the year to protect the neighbourhood. The provincial government quickly agreed to keep the areas eligibility for disaster relief in place while the levee was built.

Some folks didnt like this idea much. They included hydrologists, who denounced the mad dash back to the floodplain. Reinsurers werent especially happy either. In the trade publication Canadian Underwriter, one of them griped: Waterways residents are being allowed to rebuild in a flood plain to inadequate risk prevention standards. It is an emotional and financial decision for residents who do not wish to relocate and cannot afford the expense of building to a more robust code. As no one is willing to pay the additional cost government, the insurance industry or individuals the community is set up to repeat the mistakes of the past.

A two-alarm blaze ripped through a home in Brighton Friday morning, causing over half a million dollars in damage, injuring one firefighter, and displacing seven residents, fire officials said.

Around 8:30 a.m., about 55 firefighters responded to a report of heavy fire erupting from 39 Snow St., according to Boston fire spokesman Brian Alkins. A second alarm was ordered when the flames began spreading to nearby homes.

A video posted to the departments Twitter account showed 39 Snow St. engulfed in flames, smoke billowing into the sky, as firefighters worked to control the raging inferno.

[Firefighters] had to deal with low overhead wires from street, close quarters, and the building was set back from the road, Alkins said. They did a great job under those conditions to keep the fire from spreading.

The fire was extinguished by 9 a.m., Alkins said.

Seven residents were displaced, officials said. One firefighter reported minor injuries, and no occupants were injured.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, Alkins said.

Code Sunshine is a welcome birthday gift: After being admitted for COVID-19 to Mercy Hospital South on his daughters birthday, April 2, Bill finally went home last week with his wife, Lynn on his own 68th birthday. Bill, a COVID-19 patient who only wanted to provide his first name, spent three weeks at Mercy Hospital South, with a week on a ventilator and two weeks in intensive care. He was treated with convalescent plasma donated by someone recovered from COVID-19. Mercy South calls a Code Sunshine to celebrate with COVID-19 patients as they leave the hospital. After Bill left through the lobby with Lynn to cheers from workers lining the halls, some of his nurses and therapists signed his shirt with their motto Stayin Alive.

After two weeks in intensive care and a week on a ventilator, a Mercy Hospital South patient headed home last week on his birthday, his coronavirus battle behind him. After being admitted on his daughters birthday, April 2, the patient, who only wanted to be identified by his first name Bill, left through the lobby with his wife, Lynn, to cheers from workers lining the halls on his 68th birthday April 23.

Bill was treated with convalescent plasma donated by someone who had recovered from COVID-19. The Army veteran plans to repay that kindness by donating his own plasma when he meets the requirements.

My donors a very special person, Bill said, choking up. He kind of saved my life in a way, the physical way, and then I had my family and my friends and all the hospital staff that has supported me mentally and physically through all this isolation.

May I have your attention, please? Code sunshine, code sunshine.

Mercy South calls a Code Sunshine to celebrate COVID-19 patients as they leave. The entire hospital hears, May I have your attention, please? Code sunshine, code sunshine. Bill said his nurses and doctors at Mercy South were extraordinary people and compared the fight they face every day to his six years in the U.S. Army.

These people have to keep on on the battlefronts and be strong and take care of people so they can get through this also, he said. Dont give up if you get this virus, its a fight but dont ever give up. And if you do contract it, these people at this hospital and the nursing staff will absolutely take care of you.

For birthday plans, Bill said he was going to just have some peace and quiet, be with my bride just chill out and just not have a bunch of wires on me, oxygen on me and just celebrate my birthday.
