Im more of a Prosecco glass than a Claret Jug kind of gal. So a trip to the Home of Golf and a hotel steeped in the traditions of the game gave me a certain sense of trepidation.
However, I neednt have worried, because it turns out you dont need to be in love with the sport to have a tee-rrific time in St Andrews.
Were staying at the Old Course Hotel, overlooking the famous course which every five years hosts The Open Championship, golfs oldest and greatest tournament.
And if its good enough for golfing royalty 15-time major winner Tiger Woods is among those to have stayed at the hotel its good enough for us.
Our room is a stunning suite with panoramic views taking in West Sands beach and the famous Swilcan Bridge, which spans the 1st and 18th fairways of the Old Course.
Thankfully we dont need to worry about any balls going astray. The windows are made from bulletproof glass, just to make sure guests are safe as houses. Just mind your head if youre chilling out on the private balcony!
The room is what can only be described as the epitome of luxury.
With flat-screen TVs, an iPod docking stereo and Nespresso coffee machine, you could easily spend your stay holed up in the hotel.
But then youd be missing out on what this fantastic little university town has to offer.
St Andrews was thrown into the limelight as the place where Kate met Wills in 2001 but it had earned its place on the map long before it played royal match-maker.
West Sands beach, just a 10-minute walk from the hotel, is so beautiful that it takes your breath away.
The pristine golden sands, famously depicted in the opening scenes of Oscar-winning Chariots of Fire, stretch for miles and are ideal for a pleasant stroll or a jog at any time of year.
A wander around the town, with its ancient castle and cathedral ruins sitting alongside quaint cafes and shops, is a pleasure. And the Sealife Centre and Golf Museum are firm favourites with visitors if the weather isnt looking fair.
If youre feeling more energetic, where better to try your hand at a round of golf? My golf-mad husband was like a kid in a sweetshop at the prospect of a game. He jumped aboard the hotels shuttle bus for the three-mile drive for a round at The Dukes.
Its hillside setting offers glorious views of the town, surrounding countryside and beach. A post-round pint is a must in the modern but cosy clubhouse.
Back at the hotel, we decide our golfers elbow needs some TLC so check out the Kohler Spa, and what a treat it proves to be.
The hot stone massagewhich sees the therapist gently knead from the top of my head to literally the tips of my toes proves a world-class spa experience and a welcome break from the daily grind.
Nothing could make me feel more chilled than an afternoon hanging by the spa pool in a fluffy dressing gown and slippers, dipping in and out of the sauna, steam room and hydrotherapy pool.
Leaving the mobile behind and taking a few hours off from the world is something we should all do more often.
Before we know it, hours have passed and its almost time for dinner at the Road Hole Restaurant.
And this is a meal I wont forget in a hurry.
The floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the Old Course offer stunning views, in sync with the food at this three-AA-awarded eaterie.
Aside from the sumptuous food, including melt-in-your-mouth steak, seafood and souffl, its the little touches that make this more of an experience than a meal out.
A glass of champagne to start, our waitress suggests wine pairings for each part of the meal.We round off with the chocolate marquise, which is a dessert lovers dream a mix of caramel, toffee, honeycomb and chocolate, followed by a few cocktails. Sweet Dreams is a favourite.
And, with that in mind, its back to that big comfy bed for a night of sound slumber.
The Old Course is the par-fect package and definitely has all the fun of the fairway, whether you like a slice of sporting action or not.
The Old Course Hotel wasnt actually built until 1968, but visitors are amazed at how well it blends seamlessly into the landscape and surrounding architecture of the town.
A Classic Spa Day at the Kohler Waters Spa at the Old Course Hotel costs 180 per person.
Room from 307 per room per night on a B&B basis, based on two people sharing. oldcoursehotel.co.uk/spa/kohler-waters-spa or call 01334 474 371.

Recent declines in bird populations brought me to Dr. Bruce Stein, who has spent much of his career on the topic of wildlife biodiversity. First of all, the decline of almost a third of the birds is in the United States, not the world in North America, continental U.S. and Canada. What is the cause of the decline? There was a study that was published in the journal Science that showed almost a 3 billion bird decline since the 1970s in North America. That's about a 29 percent decline. And we're talking about number of individual birds that are flying around or as the case may be, not flying around. And a lot of these are actually common species, not the rare ones that we often think about, things like redwing blackbirds and meadow larks. And so you do have to ask what's going on here, because this is a real wakeup call. It's clear that there's a number of things that are contributing to these declines. One of the major is loss of habitat, conversion of habitat from natural ecosystems to agricultural production or loss of forest. So that's one thing. The encroachment of invasive species is another thing and the use of pesticides being a third. There's a variety of factors and there are often species specific. We also know that when we identify certain things that are threatening a particular group of species, we have the ability to turn it around.
Planting native trees, shrubs, grasses and wildflowers near farmland can attract songbirds, which in turn can help farmers control insect pests. A University of California study says songbirds can reduce insect pests by up to 46%. The researchers say planting habitat along the borders of fields benefits songbirds and provides natural pest control, because those bird species eat insects and don't damage crops.

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz., Dec. 4, 2019 /PRNewswire/ --Restoration Builders, Inc.("Restoration Builders" or "The Company") today announced another asset acquisition as it adds Chicago-based NRC Roofing and Restoration, LLC. ("NRC") to its rapidly growing network.
The insurance restoration industry has exploded to $210B+. Restoration Builders, Inc. was founded in 2017 in response to this massive growth and increasing demand. Over the past two years, they've focused on consolidating existing repair and restoration companies, which are located throughout the United States. To date, The Company has acquired 15 privately held businesses with projected revenue that will top $100 Million in 2019.
MichaelFlores had been working in the financial industry when the economy took a downturn. He was quickly recruited by a roofing and siding company. While he felt he'd found his niche, he noticed the pain points of the roofing industry. Often, he witnessed a communication breakdown between the property owner, the insurance company, and the contractor. As a result, some insurance claims started and ended in confusion, missteps, and a loss of confidence in the contractor. That experience motivated Michaelto create a roofing company that operated with integrity one that homeowners and employees alike could trust and count on.
NRC launched in 2010 out of Michael's Chicago apartment, with just two employees. Today, the company has grown to a team of 100 employees and contractors collaboratively working under the multifaceted NRC organization. This group that has generated over $100 million in revenue and restored more than 7,500 properties to their original condition or better from weather-related damage. The NRC team lives by their motto: they're not satisfied until their clients are satisfied.
"It is my great pleasure to welcome NRC to the team," commented John Lorenz, Chairman and CEO of Restoration Builders, Inc. "Michael and his results-driven team built a restoration company that takes care of client's homes with the same level of care and detail that they would give to their own property. Their core values of commitment, teamwork, respect, integrity and professionalism align perfectly with what the Restoration Builders network is all about."
Of the $49 Billion roofing contractors' industry, the roofing repair sector is among the fastest-growing. It is currently fragmented and primarily comprised of local, privately held companies. The majority of roofing customers are insurance policy holders using their coverage to fund a repair or replacement.

Hearts' appointment of Daniel Stendel has been delayed due to a last-minute demand for compensation from former club Barnsley, but it seems their fans are siding with the Jambos.
The deal to make the German Craig Leveins successor has been agreed, but Ann Budge must come to an arrangement with the Tykes over any potential payment before he can be confirmed in the Tynecastle hot seat.
Its been five weeks since Levein was relieved of his duties and fans have grown frustrated at the length of time being taken to appoint a replacement.
The wait was expected to be over this week, but Barnsley co-chairman Paul Conways assertion that they will be due money from the Edinburgh club after Stendel is appointed has held things up a little longer.
We still have a valid contract with Daniel Stendel until the end of the season, he told the Daily Mail. There is already a tampering issue with us concerning his existing contract.
And if anybody else is tampering with our rights, we are going to expect compensation.
It seems Barnsley fans are just as annoyed at their board as some Hearts fans following the late claim. Conways popularity is already low in South Yorkshire after he got rid of fans favourite Stendel in October.
And this latest move hasnt gone down well with them either, with many keen to see Stendel succeed even though hes left. Theyve not been shy in criticising Conway for his claim online.
Redhelen posted: So why compensation then as we're not losing out financially? Its not as though we have no manager, the owners wanted this change.
lk311 added: It does feel like either penny pinching or bloody mindness but from a legal standpoint they are right.
"As you said later most companies would be glad to get him off payroll (unless there is a strategic aspect).
Some feel Stendel is been treated poorly after what he achieved at Oakwell, on yer tyke wrote: They must really hate Stendel these owners, sacked him and now holding off his career.
Surely for what he's done for this football club, earning the club 6 million in just promotion prize money not to mention the coaching of players to shoot up their sell on fees. You'd think the club would just give the man his money and let him get on with his career.
Others believe this could be the reason for the short and sharp announcement of Stendels departure, without the usual platitudes usually seen when a manager departs.
KFC questioned: I guess it helps to explain the utterly bizarre statement that they 'separated' with Stendel, rather than any of the usual terms above, but what other options are there?
If as others have suggested they put him on 'gardening leave' and still have him on the payroll, then why wouldn't all clubs do that when sacking a manager, so that they could gain compensation when they want to go elsewhere?
"There'd have to be some exceptional circumstances here would there not?
Stendel had planned to be at Tynecastle for Wednesday nights Scottish Premiership clash against Livingston, but that now wont be the case given the latest developments.

In five years, Ellisha Pepper has gone from living on the streets with a drug addiction to working to help other struggling parents. Now, her family is moving into a Habitat for Humanity-built home.
Ellisha Pepper and her children celebrate the wall raising on their Habitat for Humanity home, under construction in south Salem in 2019. (Courtesy/Salem Habitat for Humanity)
When Ellisha Pepper got her son back from the state, she made a promise.
I told him, In five years, were going to have a house, she said.
At the time, Pepper was living at Her Place, an inpatient drug treatment home. Shed been clean for just a few weeks, didnt have a job and had been on the streets on and off since she was a child.
But in a few months, shell make good on her promise, moving into a brand-new south Salem home shes helped build with Habitat for Humanity. Its taken years of planning, saving and working to get her there.
Im super excited. I got to pick my tile, she said, showing a picture of white tile with clear icy pieces on her phone.

Peppers journey from homelessness and addiction to homeowner started in February 2014, when she lost custody of her three-year-old son, Anthony, because of her drug use.
Shed been using since she was 11 and never had a stable home life, she said. Her two older daughters lived with their fathers family and she wasnt in touch with them because she didnt want them living with her on the streets.
After Anthony went into foster care, Peppers caseworkers referred her to Fostering Attachment, a Marion County Circuit Court program for parents with open child welfare cases and drug or alcohol addictions.
The programs goal is to help parents get clean and teach them parenting skills so they can reunite with their children.
Pepper said she weighed her options for a few days and made a decision: she would do whatever the state wanted to get Anthony back.
To not have my son with me and to not know where he was staying, what his bed looked likethats where it started, she said. She was clean four days after state workers took Anthony away.
Her goal was simple: My kids coming home and hes staying with me.
Pepper quickly stood out in court for her dedication to making change, said Kim Lemman, executive director of St. Francis Shelter, which works with the court to provide housing for parents going through the program.
She showed up to meetings with the judge with a detailed notebook outlining her plans. She never missed an appointment with her caseworker.
Ellisha was the star of the show, Lemman said.
Anthony was back in her care three months and three weeks later.
Janalee Weitman, the court coordinator for Fostering Attachment, wasnt working there when Pepper went through the program. But Weitman said she knows her name, and that its unusual for a parent to regain custody so quickly.
Thats a sign of someone very motivated and wanting to make changes, she said.
From there, Pepper had to build a new life for herself and her children.
She got pregnant in April of 2014 with her daughter, Sofia.
When she went into labor the following January, she nearly had to put Anthony back in emergency foster care because she didnt have anyone in her life who could take care of her son while she was in the hospital.
Lemman found a friend who was willing to watch the boy instead.
After finishing inpatient treatment, Pepper and her children went to live at St. Francis Shelter for several months. Then she got a subsidized housing voucher and began looking for an apartment.
Pepper made a wishlist: she wanted a washer and dryer in the apartment, and a pool in the complex. She went through the phone book alphabetically, calling places until she found one that met her criteria. That was where she wanted to live, she declared.
With no rental history, Pepper faced an uphill battle, but Lemman said she applied the same meticulous determination to her housing search as she had to every other part of her life.
Her application was this full of supporting letters, Lemman said, holding her hands about a foot apart. She asked all the Fostering Attachment staff to write a supporting letter and put together anything she could think of to show the landlords that shed be an awesome tenant.
She also got a job at the United Gospel Missions thrift store, sorting donations and putting them out on the floor.
Five years later, shes still in the same apartment. This Thanksgiving, she hosted her first family dinner with all five of her children. One of her teenage daughters cooked green Jell-O, a family staple originally from Peppers great-grandma.
I was sitting there at the table and while I was eating, I was crying, Pepper said.
But renting wasnt her long-term plan.
At an event with Salem Housing Authority, she met someone who worked for Salems Habitat for Humanity, which works with low-income families to build affordable homes.
Whatever I have to do, Im qualifying for that, Pepper remembered thinking.
It wasnt an easy list. Pepper had to improve her credit score, pay off old debts and find a new job so she earned enough money to make home payments.
She found work with Morrison Child and Family Services as a parent mentor, working with parents who have open child welfare cases. Her experience with losing her son helps her connect with parents going through the system.
They get to relax with us, she said.
Habitat for Humanity builds two homes per year and gets anywhere from 20 to 60 applications for them, said Kattrina Osborn, Habitats director of programs.
Pepper applied three years in a row before she was accepted for 2019.
Families who work to build and buy a Habitat house are expected to put in 300 to 500 hours of sweat equity, helping with construction and other tasks. Once the house is complete, they get a 30-year interest-free mortgage from Habitat.
Construction on Peppers three-bedroom home began in April. She helped lay the foundation, framed walls, placed rebar and installed siding.
This time, she had a community backing her. Court staff, including the judge on her child welfare case, showed up to help build. The St. Francis staff spent a day on the construction, Lemman said.
The group helping on the home was so large Habitat for Humanity staff began calling it Team Pepper around the office.
We have not experienced a diverse group like that come together, said Adena Warner, Habitats director of resource development.
Pepper will move in in early 2020 with her three young children. Her teenage daughter is also planning to move with her and has been helping pick out fixtures and paint colors, she said.
Anthony is excited to have his own bedroom and has told his mom he intends to be the first to use their new toilet.
Habitat for Humanity and St. Francis Shelter each received $10,000 grants from United Way of the Mid-Willamette Valley in October to continue their work. Habitats grant will help build two new homes in 2020.
Warner shared Peppers story at the awards banquet and said she teared up sharing how far the family has come.
I get told a lot that I did a lot of work but for me, I dont see that, Pepper said. I just did what I needed to do.
