Crowded, small, and often poorly designed smaller spaces like city apartments can make it hard for residents to feel healthy, happy, and at home in them.
Heres where the ancient Chinese art of feng shui promises to help. Feng shui, which isnt a religion though its linked to Taoism, translates to wind and water. Its a practice that helps people align their energies with their surroundings.
If you create a balanced representation in your home, it can reflect how youre reacting to outside experiences. It becomes a metaphor for everything in life, explains Laura Cerrano, of Feng Shui Manhattan.
Sure, it might sound kind of... strange. But theres some science behind it. Over-crowded living spaces have been shown to have an effect on our health, acting as a stressor. And research shows that spaces and our environments play a huge role in how we feel and perform. This logic is kind of what feng shui is all about.
Many feng shui practitioners are adamant that adopting a few simple tips to carve the right environment can improve nearly every aspect of life whether its improving your health, finding love, or making more money.
Feng shui is a set of principles to help align ones living space with who they are and what they want. The practice has been around for thousands of years, but its not stodgy or outdated. In fact, its seen quite the Western resurgence in recent years, with thousands of trained feng shui consultants currently offering services across the country. Oddly enough, even Donald Trump reportedly hired a feng shui consultant back in 1995.
You want to change your life? A simple way to do that is to change your environment, Laura Cerrano notes. An expert, who considers feng shui both an art and a science, shes currently collaborating on a book with scientists and researchers in the hopes of demystifying how feng shui actually works.
Its somewhat complex, but at the same time it can be very simple, she says.
Feng shui helps you make the most of your living space by harmonizing its energy flow. Feng shui splits the world into five elements:
Working to balance these five elements properly in your home can help their corresponding traits to thrive in your life.
Chinese feng shui masters also devised a tool called a Bagua map that lays out various life areas, or stations, including health, wealth, marriage, and fame, to name a few. These areas correlate with various parts of a building or living space.
You can line up the Bagua map with your floor plan to help determine the optimal placement of colors, artwork, objects, and more. If theres a certain aspect of your life that feels off, adding different touches or reshuffling your possessions in the corresponding life area might help.
Balancing yin and yang energies is also part of feng shui, and generally speaking, an apartment feels best when its got them both. Yin is feminine energy, associated with:
Yang is masculine, denoting:
You can change the feeling of your space by playing with these energies.
Because everyones living space is different, theres no one-size-fits-all approach to feng shui. If you need to entirely revamp a cramped, run-down apartment, it might be best to take a class or hire a consultant. But if youre curious about experimenting, heres what you can do.
Laura Cerranos biggest all-purpose feng shui suggestion is to kill the clutter in every part of your apartment. No matter if you're a millionaire or if youre dealing with unemployment, the pitfall everyone falls into is clutter, she says. Clutter isnt just about aesthetics its been proven to be detrimental to your mind, to the neurons in your brain. It creates stress.
This doesnt come as too much of a surprise, seeing as how Marie Kondos book, The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up, made waves in homes and with journalists all around.
If youre trying to find love, feng shui would ask you to follow moms old adage of acting as if.
Cerrano explains, Look around your apartment and ask yourself, Is this space being prepared for the next person to check in? If you only have one towel, your soul is living a single life. So instead of having one towel, have two towels. Even though that person hasnt arrived physically yet, act like they're there already.
When it comes to moving past a failed relationship, your first order of business is cutting the cord to your last one. We use the word energy cord, Cerrano says. If you have all this stuff from [a past relationship] scattered through your home, its energetically creating a cord to that person. When you're done with a relationship, its recommended that, at your own pace, you release the things that arent beneficial anymore.
For improving productivity and boosting money flow, Cerrano suggests adding one or two plants near your desk, home office, or work area. Its related to the element of wood, which connects to networking, expansion, growth, growing wealth, and opportunities. Also, have your business card on display on your desk.
For financial prosperity, she advises getting a desk-sized lucky cat or lucky frog figurine (Google it! she says).
Dont turn to feng shui expecting a miracle. You can't bring anyone back from the dead, Cerrano notes. But beyond that, stay open, even if youre not completely convinced. According to Cerrano, theres not much feng shui cant help you with. She even says its helped clients conceive children and get rid of cancer!
To find a good feng shui consultant in your region, try the International Feng Shui Guild's consultant directory, but keep in mind that not every qualified expert may be listed there. Try asking consultants whether they focus on residential or office spaces and don't forget to ask for references.
If people even skeptical ones are willing to participate and test out the suggestions, feng shui is able to do almost everything, she says. Weve seen some amazing transformations.

Interior Designer – Career Information -
September 14, 2018 by
Mr HomeBuilder
An interior designer enhances the function, safety and aesthetics of interior spaces while taking into account how different colors, textures, furniture, lighting, and space work together to meet occupants' or visitors' needs. He or she works with both private and public spaces including residences, shopping malls, schools, offices, and hospitals.
There were 72,000 interior designers employed in 2008.
Training to become an interior designer takes two to four years and is available from professional design schools or colleges and universities. One can earn an associate degree or certificate by attending a two to three-year program, or a bachelor's degree by attending a four-year program. Upon graduating with a bachelor's degree, one would most likely begin a one to three-year apprenticeship program at a design or architecture firm and work under the supervision of an experienced interior designer.
A graduate with a certificate or associate degree would usually start his or her career as an assistant to an interior designer.
Many states require interior designers to be registered, certified or licensed. The National Council for Interior Design Qualification administers a written exam that is required by these states. In order to sit for the exam, one needs six years of combined educationat least two years of postsecondary educationand experience. Continuing education is often required to maintain one's license, certification or registration.
One to three years of on-the-job training allows interior designers to advance to supervisory positions including chief designer or design department head. These positions are usually available in larger firms. Some experienced interior designers specialize in one aspect of design or open their own design firms.
The US Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that interior design will grow faster than the average for all occupations through 2018 but there will be a lot of competition for jobs. While there are a lot of people who want to work in this field, those who have significant formal training and are creative and persistent will fare best.
Use the Salary Wizard at Salary.com to find out how much an Interior Designer currently earns in your city.
On a typical design project an interior designer's tasks include:

Interior Designer - Career Information
Interior designers make interior spaces functional, safe, and beautiful by determining space requirements and selecting decorative items, such as colors, lighting, and materials. They read blueprints and must be aware of building codes and inspection regulations.
Interior designers typically do the following:
Interior designers work closely with architects, structural engineers, mechanical engineers, and builders, to determine how interior spaces will function, look, and be furnished. Interior designers read blueprints and must be aware of building codes and inspection regulations.
Although some sketches or drawings may be freehand, most interior designers use computer-aided design (CAD) software for the majority of their drawings.
Many designers specialize in a particular type of building (home, hospital, or hotel), a specific room (bathroom or kitchen), or a specific style. Some designers work for home furnishings stores, providing design services to help customers choose materials and furnishings.
Some interior designers produce designs, plans, and drawings for construction and installation. This may include floor plans, electrical layouts, and plans needed for building permits. Interior designers may draft the preliminary design into documents that could be as simple as sketches or as inclusive as construction documents, with schedules and attachments.
The following are examples of types of interior designers:
Sustainable designers use strategies to improve energy and water efficiencies and indoor air quality, and they specify environmentally preferable products, such as bamboo and cork for floors. They may obtain certification in Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) from the U.S. Green Building Council. Such certification indicates that a building and its interior space was designed with the use of sustainable concepts.
Universal designers renovate spaces, to make them more accessible. Often, these designs are used to renovate spaces for elderly people and people with special needs; however, universal designs can benefit anyone. For example, an entry without steps may be necessary for someone in a wheelchair, but it is also helpful for someone pushing a baby stroller.
Kitchen and bath designers specialize in kitchens and bathrooms and have expert knowledge of the variety of cabinets, fixtures, appliances, plumbing, and electrical solutions for these rooms.
Lighting designers focus on the effect of lighting for home, office, and public spaces. For example, lighting designers may work on stage productions, in gallery and museum spaces, and in healthcare facilities, to find appropriate light fixtures and lighting effects for each space.

DON'T RUN SHORT!
1x8" Wood SidingTHIS is EIGHT inches?
Wood siding is often sold by the linear (or lineal) foot in 6", 8" and sometimes 10" and 12" widths. These widths are called NOMINAL "in name only" measurements. The ACTUAL or "dressed" width will be less.
BUYER BEWARE WARNING! Although there are wood siding industry standards like WWPA, WCLIB, WRCLA, CRA, NELMA - the actual thickness, width, pattern overlap and exposed face can vary from mill to mill. This variation can significantly impact the actual LFT VOLUME of wood you need to buy to cover YOUR specific SQFT area.
Be sure to confirm the DRESSED pattern measurements with the mill BEFORE you buy. Running a hundred SQFT short can cost $$$$ if custom milling and shipping are involved.
To figure out how many linear feet (LFT) of siding you need you must multiply the square foot area you need to COVER by a linear factor based on the siding width you have selected 6", 8", 10". The Lineal Foot Factor is derived by dividing 12 inches by the individual pattern's "exposed" face - the width that will be visible after the siding boards are installed.
A) Calculate the square footage in walls: length x height = area SQFT
B) Calculate, and then subtract, the square footage of doors and windows
C) Add 10% to cover trim and waste to (B) which gives you the estimated SQFT you need to cover
D) Find your pattern and nominal width in the table below
E) Multiply your estimated SQFT by the pattern's linear Foot factor
SQFT x LFT Factor = estimated Linear Feet you will need for the job. You MUST figure this out BEFORE you BUY!
When we quote your wood siding SQFT we will use the dimensions specific to the mill producing YOUR order. You will see those specifications on the confirmed quote BEFORE you commit to the order.There are NO hidden gotchas!
* assuming 3/8" board overlap
* assuming 1/2" board overlap
* assuming 1" board overlap
* assuming 1" board overlap
* assuming 3/8" overlap, allow 1/8" gap
* assuming 1/2" board overlap
* assuming 3/8" board overlap
* assuming recommended 2" board overlap
* assuming 1/2" board overlap. Note dressed dimensions are the same for both Rabbeted and NO Rabbet quarter log profiles
1x8" Pattern Coverage Example: If you are siding four walls 8 feet high by 40 feet long with 8" wide cedar siding boards and we allow 10% of the total square feet for openings, you would need approximately 2250-2450 linear feet depending on pattern selected:
These examples are for estimating only. They are based on industry pattern standards but CAN and WILL vary from mill to mill. Be sure to confirm these dimensions with the mill before you order!

Main Sewer Line Clog Costs
Cleaning a sewer line costs an average of $297 with a typical range between $173 and $456.
Broken and deteriorated lines often require replacement, which averages $2,500. Trenchless pipe repair costs an average of $160 per foot and involves the use of epoxy resin over trench digging. Visual inspection by a licensed plumber is the only way to be sure.
In many homes, the main sewer line can become clogged over time. This clog can be due to normal blockages from grease and household items or outside problems like encroaching root systems. Whatever the reason, a blocked sewer line is going to cause problems. Resolving the problem should be done as quickly as possible to avoid backups and further cleanup and repair costs.
While there are a variety of products on the market designed to help homeowners tackle simple drain clogs on their own, seek out a professional plumber or a commercial sewage company for main lines and outdoor issues.
Most homeowners pay anywhere from $100 to $900 to clean a sewer line. Extreme cases that require a dig and replace run upwards of $4,000 or more.
To remove a clog from a sewer line, professionals may rely on several different tools and appliances. Here are two commonly used methods:
Cleaning your main lines with a hydro jet typically runs $350 to $600. Heavier jobs, like light commercial lines, require larger machines with prices reaching $3,000 or more.
The most effective option for sewer lines is a high-pressure hose with special tips. This can remove the clog as well as any residue that has built up in the pipes.
Hydro jets use a combination of extremely high-pressure water and specialized heads to penetrate and remove clogs. The nozzles come in three main varieties: penetrators, spinning rotary and chain flail. However, because of the extremely high pressure, older pipes are susceptible to damage and should receive a video inspection first.
Snaking a main line costs anywhere from $100 to $250 though complex and difficult clogs may cost up to twice as much. The most basic and common approach is to rely on a drain auger, also called a drain snake. This is a long piece of flexible metal made to go down the drain and around any bends in the plumbing.
Most professional plumbers have snakes that are 50 feet or longer to reach most clogs easily. If the clog is minor, it can be broken up using an auger in a matter of minutes. While it can get the drain flowing again, it is not actually cleaning the entire pipe. The heads are usually smaller than the pipe its running through, so it only punches a hole through most clogs.
Return to Top
Sewer main repairs cost $1,000 to $4,000 with favorable conditions and easy access. Digging under slabs or in crawl spaces increases the price. Rates will vary considerably depending on the length of the pipe, the complexity of the job, ease of access and your location. Plus, youll need to take into consideration cleanup and repair work to your yard and foundation.
Secondary costs include:
Chemical drain cleaners cost anywhere from $5 to $300. In most cases, youll need a plumber to remove tough clogs and clean out a main pipe. However, chemical cleaners are great annual or bi-annual DIY maintenance tool to avoid repeat plumber visits.
Drain fluids can work on slow moving pipes without the need for a plumber. They are particularly effective after rodding, since snakes dont always remove the entire clog.
Some chemicals, like copper sulfate, should be used sparingly as they can cause significant damage to the environment.
*This is a chemical available in a wide variety of name brand root killers.
Return to Top
Cleaning a sewer line includes a variety of services to identify the location and type of clog and then remove it. Whatever the steps required to diagnose and repair the problem, plumbers charge $45 to $150 per hour with most also requiring a minimum for the service call. A service call will typical involve:
Return to Top
Having sewage or waste coming back out of the drains is the most obvious sign that there is a clog in the main sewer line. This is usually an unpleasant and messy experience that creates horrible smells and health hazards. It may even do damage to the home if it isnt taken care of immediately.
Warning signs tend to appear before backups. Dont ignore these key signs:
Sewage backups cost an average of $7 per square foot. Sewage is considered a black water contamination with serious health hazards. Small backups can be cleaned up yourself with the proper safety equipment, but larger spills should be addressed by a professional.
Removing tree roots from a line typically runs $100 to $600 or more for larger issues. Severely damaged lines require replacement for an additional $2,500 on average. Once removed, you should do annual or biannual chemical treatments.
Return to Top
Roto-Rooter requires an on-site inspection before quoting you a price, though reports have their base price at $350 for simple clogs. They also charge $250 for a video line inspection.
Roto Rooter differs from most other plumbers by giving a flat rate, regardless of the amount of time the job takes. They do offer a guarantee of their products with a mail in refund request form and limit it to one per household.
Return to Top
The costs laid out in this guide focus on main line clogs.
Clogged drains cost about $200 to have professionally fixed. Clogged drains in your home are often DIY jobs with a little chemical help or a cheap hardware store snake you can pick up for $10 to $30. Even electric handheld models are only $75 to $200 less than a service call.
Most of these indoor clogs are only a few feet down the drain, typically while the pipe is still only 2 to 3 inches in diameter. These cheaper snakes are 5 to 15 feet in length and large enough for the smaller indoor pipes. Often, chemical cleaners are all you need to get the water draining again.
Outdoor line diameter can exceed 4 inches, requiring larger, more expensive equipment. Plus, blockages can be anywhere from 10 to 100 feet away. Professionals use snakes and hydro jets that cost anywhere from $500 to $15,000 or more.
Return to Top
Prevent sewer line clogs there by:
Sewer scope inspection costs average $250 to $500 though can fall outside that range depending on where you live and the professional you use. If blockages are frequent, it may be worth having a video inspection of the sewer lines.
This works by placing a small camera on the end of the auger and running it through the pipe. This gives professionals and homeowners a clear view of what is causing blockages.
In almost every case, the city or municipality is responsible for cleaning the storm drains as these are public use and usually not located on private property. However, any drainage pipe connecting to the storm drain is the responsibility of the property owner. Examples include catch basins, sump pumps, or underground tile drainage systems.
The costs for this type of cleaning vary wildly based on the type of system you have for drainage, your location and city ordinances governing them. Contact your local plumber or landscaping professional for specific pricing.
Installing a cleanout will run an average of $2,000. The pipe and materials cost between $70 to $150 with tools and equipment running another $300 to $500. Excavation equipment and multiple laborers are usually involved though small or inaccessible jobs only require a shovel.
Cleanouts are an opening for access to the main sewer line for snakes and hydro jets for clearing clogs. Its been part of building code in the United States for decades. Unless you have an extremely old home, chances are good you already have one installed.
Return to Top
For main lines, always hire a professional plumber. Attempting to clean a line without the proper equipment or training can result in a broken sewer drain and extensive repairs and cleanup. Clearing out a kitchen sink drain might be an easy DIY project but dealing with a main sewer line is best left to the professionals.
You can get a cheap sewer cleaning, but you often get what you pay for. A clog itself isnt a big deal, but it can quickly lead to larger problems. Make sure to ask your plumber these questions to get the right help.
