The Enterprise Fire Department employs more than 50 people and responds to more than 2,000 emergency calls each year. With the growth of the city they are now relocating the central fire station.
Enterprise City Hall has housed the central fire station for a number of years, but now the process to move them to a new location has started.
The new building that the fire station will move to is located off Main Street. The city got a big bang for their buck with the owners selling the $500,000 facility to them for only $75,000. With four acres of land, the problem of space will no longer be an issue. Since this was previously a car dealership it will have to undergo some work. Architects have laid out their plans for the building to include an eight-bay garage for the fire trucks, a day room, sleeping quarters, administrative offices, and training area, among other additions.
"There is really no way that we would have had the opportunity to be able to afford to go out and build a building of this size. We have plenty of space out here to grow in the years to come. We are just amazed at and pleased with the room we got to do things we we were limited with at the other facility that we could not do," said Byron Herring, Enterprise fire chief.
The city council could accept a construction bid in the next couple of months. Construction is set to begin this year.
The funding for the project will come from the Coffee County fire service fee that was put in place several years ago. There are plans in the works for a fourth fire station.

Question: I have wooden windows with metal sliders from the mid-1940s that need to be restored in a way that complies with the Department of Interiors rules for historic preservations. My goals are to get the windows to glide smoothly on the metal sliders, to plug the holes on the interior of the frames where the security bolts were installed, to reglaze if needed, to replace the existing triple-track storm windows, and to replace the single center lock with two side locks. I found two contractors who claim to renovate windows and provide quotes, but after I showed them pictures, they stopped responding to my inquiries. Do you have any suggestions?

Answer: One problem you face is that your windows are examples of early attempts by manufacturers to move beyond the tried-and-true design for double-hung windows, in which weights tied to ropes provided the counterbalance needed to keep the window sash raised or lowered. Three historic-window restoration experts took a look at the pictures you sent, and no one was eager for the job.
A spokesman for the Craftsmen Group in Washington (202-332-3700; http://www.thecrafts-mengroup.com) said your windows arent old enough for the work the company does. Neil Mozer at Mozer Works in Takoma Park (301-920-1900; mozerworks@gmail.com) suggested you have someone evaluate your windows in person and make a recommendation about replacing them with historically appropriate windows made in a design that wont continue to cause problems. The third said he would do the work but doesnt relish it. And the price estimates he gave are high enough to justify at least pricing out new windows before you try to fix the existing ones.
The estimate came from David Gibney, owner of Fine Restoration Artisans & Craftsman for Your Historic Structures in Smithsburg, Md. (301-824-2800; d.gibney@myactv.net). He said he suspects your windows are moving on aluminum sliders. When hes confronted these before, hes had to replace them. He found replacement parts at Blaine Window and Hardware in Hagerstown, Md. (800-678-1919; http://www.blainewindow.com).
Sure enough, Blaine Window does carry a variety of metal window tracks, as well as thousands of other window parts. But, depending on the dimensions of what you need, you may discover that the parts are almost unbelievably expensive. Aluminum track 26 inches long, Part 02908-26-040, is listed on the companys Web site at $187.90 per piece. Thats not a typo, a company spokeswoman said; the companys shop has to custom-make it. When metal track is still available from manufacturers, the cost is much less, sometimes around $20, so youd need to know the specific lengths and style to get an accurate price.
Gibney cautioned that his crew would have quite a drive for a job in Arlington. He would charge $100 to go to your house and give an assessment and estimate; this cost would be subtracted from his fee if you go ahead with the job. Depending on how many windows there are, you might need to pay for motel rooms for the crew. Gibney estimated it might cost $150 per window to install new metal track (plus the cost of the track). Replacing the glazing might come to $100 per sash if it all needs to be replaced or $40 per hour for small patches. Plugging the holes in the wood and installing new security locks might cost $50 per sash.
And there would be the cost of new storm windows. Mozer estimated quality storm windows at a cost of $350 to $450 each. Installation could run $75 to $100.
Question: I have a townhouse and want to put wood flooring in my bedroom. I would like a light-color wood so it can reflect light, since my bedroom faces north. Should I get maple or a lighter pine? Wide strips or thin ones? Do the strips need to run in a certain direction dictated by the floor under the current carpet? Most home improvement plans begin with a budget. Before you go out to shop for new carpet, its important to determine how much youre willing to spend and be realistic about it.
Once you have a budget in mind, you can compare and contrast various types of carpet and installation prices. Be sure to get quotes that list these costs separately so you can compare them easily.
It might be wise to choose different carpets for different rooms. For example, you may be willing to pay extra for stain-resistant carpet in the playroom, but you likely dont need to spend the extra money for it in the master bedroom.
When shopping for carpet, you could be tempted to skimp on padding; after all, no one sees it. But the padding you select for your carpet can actually make a big difference in the performance and longevity of your new flooring.
