The demolition crew began tearing down the former Extra Foods building on Wednesday in preparation for construction on Nelson Commons.

Hendryx Street was alive with the sound of crunching metal and snapping timbers as a demolition crew set to work tearing down the old Extra Foods building on Wednesday afternoon.

"We're at the demolition phase," said Deirdie Lang, general manager of the Nelson Commons project. "We're taking it down a little slower than we would otherwise, though, because we're hoping to repurpose the glulam beams. They're very useful and expensive, and they've been holding up the roof since 1966."

She said the beams have character, and could be used to support an outer awning area, which will be used as an arcade.

"The building hasn't been in use since 2012, so we've done all the gas and hydro, getting everything decommissioned," she said. "Now it's just one thing after another."

Nelson Commons plans to release a detailed timeline for the project within the next couple of weeks.

During the day the crew discovered an air conditioning unit they hadn't realized was there, and had to remove it before continuing with the destruction. Otherwise everything was going according to plan.

The crews will also be required to tear down one wall by hand, as it connects to the New China Restaurant on Vernon Street and they could risk damaging the neighbouring property with their machinery.

The entire demolition process is slated to take approximately two weeks, which will be followed by excavation. Kootenay Co-op has now set up a webcam at nelsoncommons.ca so that interested parties who would like to follow the construction have the chance.

TACOMA, Wash. (AP) Amid demolition, crews scrapping the ferry Kalakala are saving bolts, pieces of distressed metal with rivets, some railing.

Maybe the pistons and connecting rods from the big engine.

And they can use it, considering that the office phone at Rhine Demolition Inc. has been ringing non-stop with calls from people seeking those sorts of souvenirs.

"They just want a piece of the Kalakala," said Mike Lano Sr., who's running the demolition crew. "Everybody wants a little trinket."

Workers towed the ferry to a graving dock on the Blair Waterway in Tacoma on Thursday to be scrapped. It had been sitting in the Hylebos Waterway nearby for more than a decade.

Something like 600 people have called and emailed the company seeking the mementos of the ferry.

The company doesn't know when it'll be ready to sell souvenirs, but the office is compiling a list of people who are interested.

Lano said it's hard to guess, but he thinks they're about 10 to 15 percent done with demolition of the boat, which he expects to finish no later than Feb. 7 or Feb. 8.

They've been methodically working their way through, seeing what they can salvage.

One local architectural firm has estimated $5.99 million as the cost for the city of Midland to remove asbestos and demolish three vacant downtown buildings, including the former Midland County Courthouse, a potential site for downtown development.

On Tuesday, Gary Vandergriff of Vandergriff Group Architects presented to the City Council the cost estimate, timeline and means of demolition. Other than the multi-million dollar estimate, Vandergriff revealed an project timeline that involves nine to 10 weeks of asbestos abatement, six months of mechanical demolition of the courthouse, three months of mechanical demolition of the Mid-America Building and Midland Executive Center and one month of site reclamation.

So if the project follows the timeline, the sites will be cleared out by late December or early January 2016. The new timeline replaced previous estimates made by the city that had demolition completion for March.

Vandergriff said implosions for demolition, as opposed to the mechanical method listed in the cost estimate, is not suitable because of the small size of the buildings. He added that implosion for demolition would be better for buildings with 10 or more stories.

During the demolition, the areas will be fenced off and streets around the sites will remain open.

On that thought, the council also pondered what would become for special events that take place in Centennial Plaza while demolition goes on.

City Manager Courtney Sharp said to the council that the Midland Chamber of Commerce is considering moving the Star Spangled Salute event to Hogan Park, mainly because the event has grown.

Sharp also invited the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce to hear Vandergriffs presentation, as it holds the Mex-Tex festival at the downtown plaza each summer. Hispanic chamber representatives on Tuesday said they are still planning how to handle Mex-Tex this year, now that the demolition has to be considered.

City Council hired Vandergriff Group Architects back in October to study the three buildings and provide cost estimates for the asbestos abatement and demolition.

By undergoing the demolition process for the old buildings, the city can attract private developers to build on the sites, or the city itself can convert the sites into parking lots or possibly new city buildings.

HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Demolition is underway on a downtown landmark.

Bulldozers began tearing down the 27-room Holiday Inn Wednesday morning, starting the first step in creating a major mixed-use project in the city.

Bricks, mortar and more began tumbling down as heavy equipment took to the empty building.

The city and a developer have agreed to put City Centre at Big Spring on that location.

The development is a two-phase, $100-million project.

When all is said and done, it will include a new hotel, restaurants, and retail space, along with some room for apartments and office space.

People in the area have mixed emotions about the 40-year-old hotel coming down. Distinguished guests, such as Elvis Presley, were said to have stayed there.

"It's a bittersweet emotion," said Stephanie Roney, who works nearby. "We are going to miss this facility. It's been a long-running facility, but it will be good to see new development in the city.

The demolition is expected to be completed by the end of March.

SOUTHINGTON YMCA officials announced new donations and the achievements of the past year at the groups annual meeting Wednesday night at the Aqua Turf Club.

One of the YMCAs capital projects has been the renovation of the pool. The work will include new observation decks, new lighting and ceiling and better handicap access through the installation of an elevator.

YMCA Executive Director John Myers said the Main Street Community Foundation donated $300,000 from the Bradley Barnes and Leila Upson Barnes Memorial Trust toward the elevator project. When he learned the elevator was going to cost more than anticipated, Myers asked if the foundation could help further.

On Wednesday, president and CEO of the Main Street Community Foundation Susan Sadecki, said the YMCA would receive an additional $130,000 to support the spectacular project.

We are so pleased to present the Southington YMCA with a grant for 130k to further fund the completion of the elevator, Sadecki said. I believe that Bradley Barnes, if he were still here today, would be very impressed with this project.

Myers said that late last year, a local family came to the YMCA wanting to give an anonymous $250,000 donation and an additional $200,000 matching grant. About 75 percent of the matching grant funds have been raised.

Myers said the story and the familys support of the YMCAs mission gives him goose bumps.

What a feeling, he said.

Melissa Sheffy, the outgoing president of the YMCAs board of directors, said building improvements such as a new parking lot and renovated locker rooms had been accomplished with capital funds.

When I look around the parking lot and its packed, I wonder where everyone parked before, she said.
