Maja Salvador and Gerald Anderson had to ride a motorcycle just to make it to the airport to catch their flight bound for Los Angeles on Tuesday night. Salvador and Anderson were among the several Kapamilya stars who got stuck in the horrible traffic on Tuesday evening after an isolated thunderstorm flooded the streets of the metro. Along with other ASAP mainstays, Salvador and Anderson are set to participate in the ASAP Live in L.A. show to be held in California this weekend. In a video, the two can be seen wearing helmets as they weave through the traffic.

Spaniard's Bay's Darci Ryan received a surprise at the annual Ascension Collegiate awards night in Bay Roberts on Dec. 16.

For as long as there have been graduations, it has been customary for students to celebrate by hurling their caps in the air above them. The students of the 2013-2014 graduating class at Ascension Collegiate in Bay Roberts honoured that tradition at the school's annual awards night on Dec. 16. After a countdown from teacher Michelle Cleary-Haire, students turned their heads towards the ceiling as they threw the caps into the air.

The 18-year-old finished at the top of her class and brought home a basketful of awards at the gala.

Ryan took home some $8,380 in awards. In all the school announced $133,000 worth of awards, of which $21,000 Ascension awarded itself.

As the top student in her graduating class, she received the highly coveted Governor General's Award as the top Level III student.

The Governor General's award is considered by many as the most prestigious award given to a student graduating from a Canadian high school.

"I had no idea I was getting this," she said moments after walking across the stage to receive her diploma.

She had no idea she had finished in the No. 1 spot of the 2014 Ascension graduating class and did not find out until she opened the program.

"I was really shocked, actually," said Ryan. "I had been third and fifth in previous years and this was a big push up for me."

MESILLA >> On the last day of 2014, Tony Schaefer had a bittersweet sentiment: Out with the old.

On Wednesday, Schaefer and a work crew began demolition of a house that historic preservationists believe was originally built about 1890. It was the house Schaefer has owned for 12 years, and where he and his wife, Annette, raised their children.

A July 10 fire destroyed the home. The cause of the fire remains undetermined. Since then, Schaefer, a former state Public Regulation Commission member, has worked extensively with his insurance company to arrange some kind of settlement on the property. The house is considered a total loss and Schaefer said he had no choice but to raze the house and sell the property.

In 1915, then-owner C.T. Turney enlarged the original house, turning it into a two-story farmhouse that eventually included eight bedrooms and three bathrooms. The second floor of the farm house even had a ballroom. The home was destroyed by fire in July 2014. (Courtesy of Eric Liefeld Mesilla Valley Preservation)

The house has been on the New Mexico and U.S. Historic Registers since 1982.

"I'm afraid all we're going to have now is photos and memories," said Schaefer, his voice cracking. "The main house is structurally unsound. It's an absolutely unsafe condition."

Reluctantly, the Mesilla board of trustees OK'd a demolition permit. But that didn't come before months of evaluation about whether the house could be saved.
