Some families give scarves for Christmas. Others give kitchen floors. Thats seriously how our kitchen reno got started, says Katherine Bailey, owner of a local design firm, Kat Bailey and Company. On December 26, 2011, five of Katherines relativesincluding her dad, who works in commercial constructionarrived at the Baileys Birmingham, AL, home and began demolition on the cramped kitchen.

The Bailey boys are cooking in their remodeled kitchen, which features a galvanized metal roofing island, ivory-colored cabinets and unfinished rubber-wood butcher block countertops. Four different brick styles were pieced together to create the flooring.
At first the plan was just to redo the floor, says Katherines husband, Clark, a traffic engineer. But before we knew it, a whole remodel was in the works. Katherines family completed the demo in a few days, then left Katherine and Clark to finish the job. I worked for Katherines dad in construction during college, so I knew something about remodeling, but I also had to teach myself a lot, says Clark.
Ten weeks, $3,100, and just one professional hire (a pro to put up drywall) later, the Baileys had a brand-new kitchen.
The cream cabinets and drawers (21 in all) are from Habitat for Humanity ReStore, a national chain that sells donated furniture, appliances, and building materials for a fraction of the cost. Total price: $600. New hardware for the cabinets was just $150. Katherine was able to use the old pulls, so she didnt have to buy all new onesa big money saver.
Katherine came across three long pieces of unfinished rubber-wood butcher block at a local salvage shop and scooped up all 26 feet for $350. They stained them Kona by Rust-Oleum, then put two along the back wall and the other on the island.
The Baileys bought all their appliances off Craigslist for a steal. The fridge, for example, was just $175. Clark is kind of a research guru, says Katherine. He set up alerts that notified him anytime someone in the area posted a stainless steel refrigeratorthats how he snagged this one.
The base of the kitchen island is made from the same Habitat for Humanity ReStore cabinets, but since they were meant to go against a wall, the backs were unfinished. We didnt know how to solve that problem until, on a whim, I thought of galvanized metal roofing, says Katherine. Two sheets were $40.
Four different brick styles make up the kitchen floor. Some had to be cut to size, so the couple rented a brick saw for $100. People dont use brick much indoors, but its indestructible and hides dirt like crazy, says Katherine.

LISBON - Preparation for eventual construction of a new county office building at the site of the former Columbiana County Job and Family Services building is expected to begin sometime in 2015.
County commissioners took the first step this week by transferring $2 million in unappropriated funding to a newly created construction account, with the money to be used for, among other things, the new office building project.
The former JFS building on Nelson Avenue was demolished in 2013 after the JFS moved to the new county government services facility located north of downtown Lisbon. At the time, commissioners said they were contemplating constructing a new office building on the site that would serve as the new home for the county development department. They would also like to move the county Port Authority into the building to consolidate the county's economic development agencies under one roof.
After the meeting, Commissioner Chairman Jim Hoppel said they are considering using some of the $2 million that had been transferred to hire an architect to begin design work on the new building.
"We're just planning ahead a bit ... We're looking toward seeing what we can do," he said.
Hoppel and commissioners believe the development department needs a new, larger home to meet with business officials interested in expanding or moving to the county. It is currently located in a cramped and dilapidated building at the end of South Beaver Street.
"We need to get (Tad) a better place" to meet with potential business clientele, he said.
Hoppel was referring to Tad Herold, the development department director hired in September 2013. The department had been without a director for the previous 10 years when commissioners decided to revitalize the office by hiring Herold.
Hoppel said commissioners are looking at constructing a one-story building with a basement that would be large enough to house several other county offices. Commissioners pay rent for those county offices located in non-government buildings, and moving some of them to the new facility would save money that could be used to pay for construction.
In other business, commissioners renewed an agreement with Frontier Communications for continued maintenance of the equipment it provides for the county's 911 system. The one-year contract is for $38,812.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) This year should be a busy one at a neighborhood thats being created from scratch.
What were looking at today is the rail yard, so we have a major construction project over the eastern rail yard, explained Michael Samuelian, of Related.
Samuelian was describing the construction going on at 10 Hudson Yards the first building to be put up at the site.
Itsa 52-story office building, were at about the 27th floor right now,Samuelian said.
By this time next year, 10 buildings should be completed, as well as the deck over the rail yard, Haskell reported.
And youll start to see the retail and 30 Hudson Yards, which will ultimately be the fourthtallest office building in New York starting to go vertical,Samuelian said.
Construction at the site will continue for at least 10 more years.
