CADILLAC Firefighters from two departments successfully doused a blazed that sparked in a Cadillac home early Friday morning.

The fire started about 1 a.m. The homeowners at 904 N. Mitchell St. came home to discover smoke and flames in the house. Cadillac Fire Department Lt. Mark Near said no one was inside the home at the time of the fire.

Smoke billowed out of the home as the fire was doused. Fire crews remained on scene until around 3 a.m. overhauling the affected portions of the structure. North Mitchell Street was temporarily blocked.

Fire damage was limited to one main floor bedroom, while the upper floor of the home sustained some smoke and heat damage, according to Cadillac firefighters.

Near said an investigation revealed that the fire originated in electrical wiring within a wall of the main floor bedroom. The fire went undetected spread to wall and ceiling cavities until smoke was noticed by the returning home owner.

The Cadillac Fire Department is reminding everyone to consult a licensed electrician anytime one encounters any questionable wiring within their home. The department also advises taking the time to install and test smoke alarms.

Cadillac firefighters were assisted by Haring Fire Department.

Frayed wiring on a Christmas tree sparked a Dorchester fire. (WBZ-TV)

BOSTON (CBS) A dozen residents were displaced by a Dorchester fire that investigators said was caused by faulty wiring on a Christmas tree.

Boston firefighters responded to Bellevue Street in Dorchester just before 8 p.m. on Friday night for a two-alarm fire in an occupied three-family home.

No one was injured by the fire, but it caused about $500,000 in damage and 12 people were unable to return back inside.

Fire investigators determined that the fire was caused by a spark from frayed wiring on a second floor Christmas tree.

The flames engulfed the tree quickly and spread rapidly throughout the building, firefighters said.

A neighboring home was evacuated after it suffered surface damage, but the residents were allowed back in the building.

As waters subside, power restored to more places and highway reopens.

KUALA LUMPUR: More people are returning home in flooded peninsular states, but in Sabah rising waters have forced more to evacuate.

Power was restored to more than 80 per cent of electricity consumers in Kelantan, and the East Coast Highway from Karak to Jabor was reopened to all vehicles this morning.

There were less than 75,000 evacuees in Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang and Johor this morning but the number in Sabah rose to 910 people this morning from 615 people last night.

Most of them were in Kota Belud (810) followed by Kota Marudu (82) and Pitas (18).

As people returned home in Kelantan, power had been restored to more than 80 per cent of consumers in the state, a spokesman for Tenaga Nasional Berhad said.

KELANTAN: the sky was overcast with intermittent rain, but the number of evacuees dropped to 24,020 people as compared to 26,029 people last night.

They were in Tanah Merah (14,184), Kuala Krai (3,636), Gua Musang (3,006), Machang (2,555), Kota Baru (515) and Tumpat (124).

PAHANG: the number of evacuees fell to 42,938 people as compared to 43,624 people last night, in Temerloh (20,962), Pekan (11,063), Jerantut (3,792), Bera (3,479), Maran (2,168), Kuantan (1,074) and Lipis (400).

TERENGGANU: 143 people in Dungun.

Boston firefighters extinguished a quick-moving fire in a three-family Dorchester home Friday night.

Investigators said the two-alarm fire at 34 Bellevue St. was caused by a spark from some frayed wiring on a Christmas tree in the buildings second floor apartment. From there, the fire spread to the third floor and roof.

There were no reports of any injuries. About 12 residents were displaced by the fire, officials said.

Another home at 32 Bellevue St. also sustained some damage, though officials said residents there will likely be allowed to return to their homes Friday night.

The jeer: Jeers to Southeastern Services Co. I called them out to clean my chimney due to a wasp nest. After they arrived, they made excuses why they could not get on the chimney, so they caulked around my damper - saying this would solve the problem - and charged us $120.

We still have wasps coming in our home through the chimney. I have called the company multiple times with no replies.

About Bullard: Bullard said the someone from company came to her house the day after Thanksgiving to do the work. "We still have the problem," she said.

The other side of the jeer: Rick Taylor of Southeastern Services responded by email:

"I talked to the employee who went to the Bullard home, and it was a cold morning with a two-story steep roof. There was frost still on one side, so a roof climb was out of the question and is not as common as in prior years for chimney cleaning if all can be inspected.

"According to my employee's statement and written notes of the service, the Bullards had gas logs in the home with a large quantity of dead wasps or hornets. My employee was told the damper was previously sealed and opened (the) damper quite easily. No wasp nest was seen, but a few live ones were. My employee had no way to contain wasps to the fireplace area if the nest was dislodged and fell during cleaning.

"The Bullards have a very small child who was in the room along with both parents and our employee, thus to chance a nest of unknown size falling into (the) living area and swarming was not the way to approach this problem either. My employee sealed the damper all around and inspected areas for access holes. My employee did what he thought was best, and if I had been there I would have done the same thing.

"We make our employees' and customers' safety a top priority. We have been in business close to 30 years and have never had a lost-time injury or damage to any property. We did receive a call from Mrs. Bullard and lost the call and called what we thought was her number to try to resolve this. We are not licensed exterminators, thus can't spray any chemicals to try to cease wasp activity. We warranty all our work and have many satisfied customers, but, again, we make safety our top priority."

For years, consumer technology has resided in two rooms: the office, and the living room. At CES 2015, expect it to colonize the rest of the home.

That's not to say that you won't find traditional PCs and televisions this week in Las Vegas. But consumer firms have moved beyond those mature, traditional markets into mobile technology, wearables, and carsand they keep moving. This year, the theme of the show may very well be the connected home, as smartphones and tablets take on a new role as control devices for the Internet of Things.

Here are a few names to keep an eye out for: EchoStar (home automation), Dish (an over-the-top video service?), Intel (new Broadwell PCs), Ford (its new SYNC3 entertainment system) and Samsung (just about everything).

Staff from PCWorld, Macworld, Greenbot, and TechHive will be on the show floor at CES this week, scoping out the tech you'll want to know more about, then buy in 2015. Here's what we know so far.

In 1999, TiVo and DVRs defined CES. In 2014, so did wearables. In 2015, it'll be the connected home. There was a time when this technology was accessible only to hardcore hobbyists and wealthy households with the means to hire custom installers. That time has passed.

Until recently, most smart-home products depended on a central hub for control. That's the established way of doing things, andEchoStar, the company behind the Slingbox and Dish Networks Hopper set-top box, will be showing what looks to be a very complete connected-home system. Dubbed Sage, the set-topwill be capable of handling lighting controls, door locks, security cameras, thermostats, and all manner of sensors. Despite that complexity, EchoStar is positioning Sage as a DIY system.

We also expect new additions to Belkin's WeMo home automation line, and possibly D-Link's connected-home ecosystem as well. Netgear issupposed to ship its newArlo home-security camera. Note the trend: networking companies expanding into connected-home peripherals. On that front,we could also see more Wave 2 802.11ac routers join the ranks of theAsus RT-AC87UandNetgear Nighthawk X4.

Do you really need a fridge that youcan chat with via instant message? Expect to see connected yet practical devices at the 2015 CES.

Meanwhile mobile devices like smartphones and tablets are stepping in to replace those hubs, controlling products like a new wave of smart LEDs we expect to compete withthe Philips Hue product line.

In appliances,CES is a kind of dreamy futurescape, where manufacturers can take a break from staid metal boxes and show off gadget prototypes straight out ofThe Jetsons. In past years, the futuristic appliances weve seen at CES were all about connecting you to the Internetbut does anyone need to Facebook from their refrigerator? This year, expect to see function triumph over the outlandish, with integrated smart appliances that share information about your activities to make your home hum along seamlessly. Will the next Nest pop up at CES? Well have to wait and see.
