Cisco CBC in Manhattan is now lit with NuLEDs Power-over-Ethernet (UPOE) lighting. This landmark installation at One Penn Plaza marks the beginning of a shift to low voltage Ethernet based lighting systems. Included in the installation are 2x2 LED troffers with RGB ColorBeacons. These color-changing diamonds in the center of the fixtures can be used for visual communication in many applications.
Smart Lighting is the Trojan Horse for connectivity and intelligence. According to Prasanna Venkatesan, Vertical Business Solutions Leader, IoT Group at Cisco, the next generation of lighting will revolve around the Digital Ceiling as the industry moves to Power over Ethernet (UPOE). By powering lighting through Ethernet, the lighting system is not only capable of being measured and monitored, the path is now open to other applications via the network such as HVAC sensors, video surveillance, fire and safety, power management and building access .
The perfect storm for Lighting-over-IP is here LEDs have reached the turning point where they are producing a very high quality of light for nearly half the power of traditional lighting, UPOE (Universal Power-over-Ethernet) is now at 60 watts/port, and the building industry is about to begin the next cycle of growth as gas prices drop, the stock market reaches new highs, and new building energy efficient mandates sweep the nation. The time is now.
Working with Cisco has been an amazing experience, states Lisa Isaacson, Founder of NuLEDs. We have witnessed a new movement from the beginning. After being approached by Cisco, NuLEDs developed the first PoE powered lights to be powered and controlled on by the Ethernet network, and we have been watching the cogs turn in what will be the next generation of lighting.
Manhattan CBC is one of several facilities to install NuLEDs PoE lighting system, including Miami Dade School, Independence Blue Cross and Alpha Tech. Next up will be Cisco London and Ciscos Head Quarters in San Jose.
