Heritage Minister halts demolition of Margaret Street bonded stores - January 5, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Environment and Heritage Protection Minister Andrew Powell has called a halt on the proposed demolition of three old brick buildings in Margaret Street.

Mr Powell wants a second opinion on the heritage value of the buildings as well as these Bonded Stores' contribution to the streetscape.

Together the stores link to Brisbane's 1850s, although the buildings themselves date from 1913.

The "stop work" order was announced by Premier Campbell Newman at Redcliffe on Friday.

Mr Newman said he had been advised there was new information about the buildings that was not available to Brisbane City Council in 2005 when it reviewed the city's heritage buildings.

"These are heritage buildings. They are old buildings and there is precious little left in the Brisbane CBD," Mr Newman said.

"We are concerned that these may be lost to the people."

Mr Powell has called an urgent meeting of the Queensland Heritage Council to debate the demolition of the three buildings, which a developer wants to demolish for apartment block.

Mr Newman said it was right to issue a "stop work" order and let the Queensland Heritage Council decide.

Demolition of Brannon Center delayed - January 5, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Published: Sunday, January 4, 2015 at 4:22 p.m. Last Modified: Sunday, January 4, 2015 at 4:22 p.m.

NEW SMYRNA BEACH The 50-year old Brannon Center probably wont be demolished until bids come in for the construction of a new building on the same site, a project that has a $5 million budget.

City leaders had initially planned to tear down the building at 105 S. Riverside Drive this month. The center is used to host events ranging from weddings to large city government meetings.

However, at the City Commissions recent planning and goal setting session, Mayor Jim Hathaway said he wanted to wait to see what its going to cost to build a new Brannon Center before proceeding with razing the existing building. The $5 million budgeted for the project is part of a $7.8 million bank loan that will fund several other capital projects.

It doesnt make sense to tear down that building if you cant afford to replace it, Hathaway reiterated last week.

The new Brannon Center could go out to bid this month, with bids coming in March or April, Assistant City Manager Khalid Resheidat said.

Right now, were thinking about probably moving (the demolition date) until we actually have the bids for construction, Resheidat said. This way we make sure we have the funding available (and) the cost meets the current budget for it.

Last year, architects with the Orlando firm Rogers, Lovelock and Fritz surveyed the Brannon Center, which was originally built as the citys library, and in a report outlined multiple deficiencies in the roughly 14,000-square foot building. They found the windows, doors, roof and heating and air conditioning system all needed to be replaced; the building enclosure needed to be redone to meet wind and energy codes, and portions of the interior of the building didnt meet the Americans with Disabilities Act requirements. The report also said the building had inadequate insulation.

The City Commission decided to tear down and rebuild the center and in September gave the go ahead to proceed with plans after seeing a concept presented by officials with Rogers, Lovelock and Fritz. The new building, which would be about the same size as the current center, would be built closer to the river, have an elevated, covered outdoor terrace area, multipurpose rooms and a lobby.

Hathaway, who was not on the commission when the decision was made to rebuild the Brannon Center, said at the planning session last month that the project gave him heartburn and he was concerned about it costing more than anticipated. Resheidat said last week that, as of now, it looks like the plans will be within the citys budget.

Sidewalks to be cleared - January 5, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

AN OFFICIAL of the Davao City Demolition Office said Monday that it will resume its operation against vendors who violate the one-third-two-third policy anytime this week.

Retired Colonel Yusop Jimlani said Monday that the suspension of operations against violators was already lifted on Sunday, January 4.

He said Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte approved the moratorium from December 5 to January 4 only.

However, Jimlani said he will extend it anytime this week to give vendors more time to transfer.

"Mubalik na ta sa normal sa atong gina tawag na one-third-two-third policy," Jimlani said.

He appealed to the vendors in the metropolis, especially in downtown area, to abide by the policy to avoid demolition and confiscation of items.

He said the pedestrians complain during the Yuletide season but there was no demolition implemented following the moratorium.

"Karon, sa mga kaigsuonan natoi nga mga vendors, pag bigyan na pud nato ang kadaghanan sa katawhan nga nanginahanglan sa ilang dalan," he said.

Jimlani said the demolition team will operate even in night time. (ANC)

Fatal accident: Demolition charge kills Bbang man - January 5, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

A demolition worker, 26, died yesterday morning when a rock struck him in the stomach while he and co-workers cleared a mountain area where a road will soon be built, police said.

Pok Saveut, also known as Joy, from the Long Nam company, died on the way to Prey Veng provincial hospital, said Soy Dara, in charge of autopsies at Ba Phnom district police station.

The piece of rock gutted him. The company and his family tried to send him to hospital, he said.

Saveut, from Battambang, was a father of two boys, one of whom is only about 3 months old, Dara added.

Saveuts brother, Pok Chet, 22, said an excavator appeared to have triggered explosives that had not gone off earlier.

Right now, I dont know whether the company will compensate my family for this accident, he said.

Tong Vanny, a truck driver for Long Nam, said the company had an obligation to compensate the victim. However, he added, workers are yet to be paid Decembers wages.

Company officials could not be reached for comment.
