An elderly grandmother died of pneumonia after yobs hurled a breeze block through her window leaving her exposed to freezing temperatures on the coldest night of the year.
June Green, 83, who had been the victim of three previous burglaries, stayed in her bedroom when she heard the noise and spent the next 12 hours huddled under blankets not daring to investigate.
Raiders waited until she was asleep before entering the bungalow where she lived alone to steal a handbag containing a purse with around 60 cash from the bedroom.

SARANAC LAKE - Interior construction and renovation work on the Hotel Saranac, starting with replacement of all 169 of its guest room windows, is expected to begin by the end of this month.
That's what Fred Roedel III of New Hampshire-based Roedel Companies said Wednesday night. Roedel was the guest speaker at a meeting of the Saranac Lake Women's College Scholarship Club. Roughly 50 people braved the double-digit-subzero temperatures outside to attend the meeting, held in the Saranac Lake Free Library's Cantwell Community Room.
Last month, Roedel told the Enterprise the project was behind schedule, but he said he still hoped to reopen the iconic Main Street hotel this spring.

Asked by an audience member Wednesday night what the expected opening date for the hotel would be, Roedel said it will be closer to mid summer.
"We're honing in on that," he said. "Construction is going to begin in earnest by the end of this month. We're writing contracts now for our plumbing, electric, heating and air conditioning. As we hone in on that more and more, we're probably looking at July and August, somewhere in there."
That may seem like a quick turnaround, but Roedel said his company can put up a brand-new hotel in nine months.
"The great thing here is the structure is here," he said. "We're not moving any walls. When we begin work, they'll literally begin laying the electric, the plumbing and the mechanical right where it's going to go. So we think in a period of three to four months we'll be putting up paint, putting down carpet and getting ready for this thing."
The double-hung vinyl windows on the third, fourth, fifth and sixth floors will be replaced starting in two weeks, Roedel said. Special small tents will be extended outside the windows so workers can replace them from inside the hotel.
"They're all new windows," he said. "I'm looking forward to that day. I drove up here today from New Hampshire and fixed four windows where the window just fell out of the frame and the cold air was blowing through it."

Signaling the growing importance of solar energy to Americas future, the widely read and cited annual State of American Energy Report released today by the American Petroleum Institute (API) includes, for the first time ever, a comprehensive section on the rapid growth of the U.S. solar energy industry and its impact on our nations economy and environment.
According to the report, which included an assist from the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA), solar is now the fastest-growing source of renewable energy in America. Today, the U.S. has an estimated 20.2 GW of installed solar capacity, enough to effectively power nearly 4 million homes in the United States or every single home in a state the size of Massachusetts or New Jersey with another 20 GW in the pipeline for 2015-16.
The report went on to say, Solar energy is now more affordable than ever. According to SEIA/GTM Research, national blended average system prices have dropped 53 percent since 2010. Today, the solar industry employs 143,000 Americans and pumps more than $15 billion a year into the U.S. economy. This remarkable growth is due, in large part, to smart and effective public policies, such as the Solar Investment Tax Credit (ITC), Net Energy Metering (NEM) and Renewable Energy Standards (RES).
The impact of solar energy on the environment has been equally impressive. Solar helped to offset an estimated 20 million metric tons of harmful CO2 emissions in 2014, which is the equivalent of taking four million cars off U.S. highways, saving 2.1 billion gallons of gasoline or shuttering five coal-fired power plants, the report stated. When looking at Americas energy future, solar can be a real game changer, providing more and more homes, businesses, schools and government entities across the United States with clean, reliable and affordable electricity, while also helping states to meet proposed new obligations under Section 111(d) of the Clean Air Act.
Most importantly, the report predicted strong, continued growth in all sectors of the U.S. solar industry residential, commercial, utility-scale and solar heating and cooling over the next two years.
The United States is in the midst of a new era in domestic energy abundance characterized by rising use of renewable energy and increased oil and natural gas production that is strengthening our economic outlook and enabling America to emerge as a global energy superpower, said API President and CEO Jack Gerard. Its a remarkable transformation that has been made possible because America is uniquely rich in energy resources, a talented workforce and cutting-edge energy technologies."
Solar energy is one of Americas great success stories, said SEIA President and CEO Rhone Resch. Last year, solar installations were 70 times higher than they were in 2006 and today theres nearly 30 times more solar capacity online nationwide. Weve gone from being an $800 million industry in 2006 to a $15 billion industry today. The price to install a solar rooftop system has been cut in half, while utility systems have dropped by 70 percent. It took the U.S. solar industry 40 years to install the first 20 GW of solar. Now, were going to install the next 20 GW in the next two years. In fact, during every single week of 2015, were going to install more capacity than what we did during the entire year in 2006. Any way you look at it, solar energy is paying huge dividends for the economy, our environment and Americas future.

An office building in Delray's Pineapple Grove Arts District soon will be transformed into a restaurant.
Late Tuesday, Delray Beach city commissioners signed off on plans to convert the building and demolish the existing parking lot to make room for a new parking setup with landscaping. City officials said it isn't known what restaurant will ultimately open, but the architect plans to create a space that can house a restaurant.
The project, known as "The Del," is at the southeast corner of Northeast Fourth Street and Third Avenue.
"This is a great thing for this area," Commissioner Shelly Petrolia said. "This is one of the areas that's budding and we need to bring people there."
Commissioner Jordana Jarjura said she liked that the proposal calls for reusing the existing building.
The proposal will have to receive design approval from the city before construction can begin.

KPMG one of the big four accountancy firms has agreed to let most of the 66 Queen Square development due to be ready in the summer. The deal had been speculated onfor months, following rival PwC moving to 2 Glass Wharf in Temple Quarter.
The Queen Squareproject, part new-build and part refurbishment of a period building, was one of the first speculative office developments in Bristol since the recession.

ALGONQUIN As School District 300 administrators adjust to a new office this week, residents within the district may need to adjust how they identify their school system.
After being stationed in Carpentersville for about three decades, administrators on Monday started the incremental move from their temporary headquarters at Hampshire High School to a new $3.9 million administration building near Jacobs High School in Algonquin.
Officially, the Illinois State Board of Education will continue to recognize the district as Community Unit School District 300 (CUSD 300). But with other CUSD 300s located in Du Quoin, Rockridge and Sullivan, many within the district community know it as Carpentersville District 300.
A move into Algonquin changes the informal identifier, board Vice President Joe Stevens said. Residents, however, should quickly catch on to the change, he said.
When we moved everybody to Hampshire temporarily, it wasnt a big deal, Stevens said. Nobody seemed to have difficulties with it. They understood.
In early 2014, administrators vacated the former Central Office in Carpentersville to allow construction crews to renovate it into a permanent building for the districts alternative Oak Ridge school.
The administration temporarily relocated to Hampshire, as construction began on a new two-story office building near Jacobs.
Despite administrators move into McHenry County, the location change doesnt mean the district is cutting ties with Carpentersville, said Superintendent Fred Heid. The districts boundaries still span three other counties, including Cook, DeKalb and Kane.
We are a community school district and serve our entire district, Heid said. We continue to serve and support all of our students and families.
Officials have said the larger building will be more centrally located within the district and house all administrative departments for the first time.
