Cottle Carr Yaw Architects, an international architecture firm located in the Roaring Fork Valley, garnered several awards and distinctions to close a successful year.
The American Institute of Architects bestowed three architectural honors to Cottle Carr Yaw for 2014. An Avon residence received two Award of Merit designations: one from the state level and the other from the West Chapter of American Institute of Architects. A third Award of Merit for the West Chapter was given to the Snowmass Treehouse Residence in the Unbuilt Design category.
PCBC, an annual gathering of the United States most prominent builders, developers, architects and planners, recognizes excellence and innovation for complex design and build issues through its Gold Nugget Awards. Cottle Carr Yaw received an Award of Merit for the Changbaishan Deer Valley Villas project in northern China.
For a second year in a row, Luxe magazine named Cottle Carr Yaw to the 2015 Gold List, on which it featured two Roaring Fork Valley residences.
(Cottle Carr Yaw) had terrific momentum in 2014, receiving a lot of recognition. We were especially honored to be the sole Western Slope firm to receive an (American Institute of Architects) award at the state level. Were excited with the opportunities that 2015 brings with new prospects, said Cottle Carr Yaw Architects partner Rich Carr.
Cottle Carr Yaw takes a modernist approach, integrating sustainable design and the environment to create inspiring spaces. For more information, visit http://www.ccy architects.com.

Barring any poor weather preventing travel, representatives from an architecture firm are scheduled on Monday to present information about the Ector County Courthouse to commissioners.
Brinkley Sargent, which was hired in April 2014, on a contract of $190,000, to do master planning and a needs assessment on the aging courthouse, was originally scheduled to make the presentation in December, but thick fog prevented their plane from taking off.
The architecture firm was sought after a November 2013 bond election defeat in which county officials sought approval for a $95 million new courthouse, but were soundly defeated by voters.
Preceding the bond, Ector County Judge Susan Redford formed a group to study the courthouse, the second such group in four years, which ultimately proposed the $95 million building.
The initial specs for the building included underground parking for certain elected officials and was criticized for a lack of detail on the overall plans.
After the bond was defeated, Redford said she should have gone to the public with the plans sooner and sought public input aside from the community leaders that were put in the study group.
Now, she and Brinkley Sargent have pledged to host public meetings to find out what the people of Odessa want in a courthouse before any decisions are made.
Public meetings have yet to be scheduled.

Renie Clark, right, and Sally Walling, left, look over one of the teddy bears that Clark knits at her home in the Cala Springs Mobile Home Park on Northeast 14th Street in Ocala, Fla. on Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2015. Clark crafts dolls and teddy bears and gives them to people in assisted living facilities, at the domestic violence shelter and other locations.
Renie Clark views her doll restoring efforts not as a hobby but as a ministry. The dolls are given to residents of local health care facilities and women at the domestic violence shelter.
The concept is reinforced by Howard Speights, activities director at Ocala Avante Nursing Home, one of the recipients of Clark's talents.
Those dolls do something for my residents like nothing else I ever have seen, Speights said. These are long-term residents who can't step outside of their rooms to socialize. The dolls take them back to their childhood, it opens them up and brings broads smiles to their faces. It brings my residents a whole lot of joy. They hold their dolls with a real sense of ownership as if they were their most treasured possession. The dolls then become a focal point for our staff to relate to those who before had very little conversation at all.
The Cala Springs home Clark shares with her husband, Harold, is a doll paradise. A tiny clothesline hangs above the washer and dryer to hold the clothes she makes and repairs on her state-of-the-art sewing machine, a gift from Harold.
I wore out two others, Clark said of the sewing machine.
One bedroom is devoted to brightly colored materials, yarn and other items essential for repairs. Dolls in various stages of completion are displayed throughout the home.
When asked how her husband co-exists with the large number of dolls, Clark grinned and said, I'm very happy when I am sewing and a little cranky when I am not; he wants me happy.
The value of using dolls to reach nursing home residents was further explained by David Huckabee, who provides area residents with programs, education and support services from the Central and North Florida Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association.
No matter whom you are, what your age is, what your limitations may be, everyone wants a purpose, Huckabee said. A purpose in life can enhance the quality of life. The restored dolls being donated can serve as a reminder of when these resident women may have cared for their children, and may be a way for them to offer attention and nurture to something else.

Remodeled Samaritan rehab opens -
January 12, 2015 by
Mr HomeBuilder
When Wes Lokey began rehabilitation following his first heart attack, he remembers working out in a very small room.
It was upstairs and couldnt fit more than three or four patients at a time, said Lokey, 64 of Albany. I was there twice a week.
Lokeys workouts come with a little more elbow room these days, thanks to a complete remodel of the Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation Center adjacent to Samaritan Albany General Hospital on Elm Street S.W.
For Lokey, who has worked out at the cardiac center for 15 years, the new area is a welcome change.
It offers a lot more, said Lokey. Its more room that lets more people take part. Rehab is as much about support as anything.
Lokey spends his time using one of the many treadmills and working out with weights.
I feel good working out here. Its certainly nicer and brings in more people, he said.
Angie Gallagher, who has been the Cardiac Rehabilitation manager since it opened in 1998, has seen plenty of changes over the years.
This is really our fourth remodel, but this gives us so many options, she said. The staff and our patients love it. Aesthetically it is a great improvement.
Gallagher said the makeover provides a 40-percent overall increase in space, including 33 percent more gym space for patients. There is no additional equipment at this time, but that could change.
