Department of Health looks to curb seagull attacks on maintenance crews - January 13, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Maintenance crews at the Department of Health in Dublin are having to run the gauntlet of frenzied seagull attacks and managers are now taking action to prevent the building turning into some kind of Hitchcockian nightmare.

It isnt the first time comparisons have been made between the capital and the fictional town of Capitola, in which the revered horror film directors 1963 movie The Birds was set.

Speaking last summer, Kerry senator Ned OSullivan used the upper house of the Oireachtas as a platform to launch an impassioned diatribe against Dublins seagull population who had lost the run of themselves.

He listed a litany of transgressions perpetrated by our feathered foes, such as fast-food theft, knicking childrens lollipops, and keeping city centre inhabitants awake at night.

Six months on, a public tender has been issued to install a deterrent system aimed at displacing a growing seagull colony from the top of the Department of Health headquarters at Hawkins House, just behind Burgh Quay.

The seagull problem here in Hawkins House has become worse over the last number of years, said a department spokesman.

He said measures imposed by businesses in the surrounding area had turned the building with an avian-esque name into something of a hub for the winged fiends.

Were not sure whether its due to an increase in the seagull population, or the fact that other businesses in the area have installed pest control measures. If thats the case then seagulls are seeking out the nearest unprotected areas to nest, and thats our building, he added.

Describing the very real plight of maintenance staff at Hawkins House, he said: Once theyve nested, access to the roof is limited because of the risk of attacks on maintenance crews who require access on a regular basis. Like any bird, if you start to the disturb them when they nest theyll attack.

DIY pest control 'smoke bombs' wasting our time, fire chief complains - January 13, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

The British Pest Control Association (BPCA) described the smoke bombs as "aggressive" products.

Richard Moseley, technical manager for BPCA, said such devices were used by the association in confined areas such as loft spaces and greenhouses to control pests, including cluster flies.

"Imagine a firework with insecticides going off - that's what you're dealing with," he said.

"Sometimes smoke can be seen externally and in cases such as these we would inform the local fire service, but it's not something an amateur would always think of."

They are not advised for use in living areas, such as kitchens or sitting rooms, where there is a greater risk of contamination, he said.

He added there was a "lack of knowledge" with over-the-counter products.

'Good Samaritan' spots burglars with wheelie bin full of loot and calls police - January 13, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

A NURSE whose home was ransacked during a burglary has thanked a "Good Samaritan" who told police where the criminals were.

Anne Spiller, aged 56, returned from work in the evening of October 27 to find her Deane home had been burgled, with the patio doors smashed and countless items taken.

On Tuesday, 24-year-old Luke Walker, who has a string of burglary convictions to his name, appeared at Bolton Crown Court and was given a jail term of three years and four months for his role in the burglary.

Two teenagers, aged 13 and 14, also pleaded guilty to taking part in the burglary and will be sentenced at a later date at Bolton Magistrates Court.

The offenders were found with the majority of Ms Spillers property at a house in Fern Hill Avenue, Deane after a resident saw them suspiciously pushing a wheelie bin in the road which they were using to transport the stolen goods.

Items stolen included laptops, a TV, digital cameras, mobile phones, watches, sunglasses, perfume, jewellery, underwear and even bottles of spirits.

Speaking after the sentencing, the 56-year-old victim said: I just wanted to say a big thank you to the person who spotted them in the act and rang the police straight away.

If it wasnt for that person then this would have been very different and they might not have been caught, so I want to say thank you for that.

A large amount of the haul was returned to Ms Spiller, although an Ipod, a Kindle device and some jewellery with sentimental value has not been returned to her.

She said she was pleased to see Walker given a lengthy jail term for the burglary which left her feeling not right for weeks.

Burglar steals 16,000 CASH given as wedding gifts during break-in at terraced home in Coventry - January 13, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

A burglar thought he had hit the jackpot when he found envelopes containing a total of more than 16,000 after breaking into a terraced house.

The cash had been given by friends and relatives as wedding gifts to the owners son and his bride, a judge has heard.

Brendon Dacres, 22, of Elmsdale Avenue, Foleshill, Coventry, pleaded guilty at the crown court in Leamington to the burglary.

He was jailed for 20 months consecutive to a six-month sentence he is already serving for an attempted burglary for which he was on bail at the time.

Prosecutor Lal Amarasinghe said that on October 10 the householder left his end-of-terrace home in Coundon and when he returned that afternoon the back-door key was in the lock from the inside.

He managed to get in and found that the patio doors were open and the downstairs rooms had been rummaged through.

A total of 16,670 in cash had been taken, and Mr Amarasinghe explained that the owners son had recently got married, and the money was in envelopes friends and relatives had given to the couple, who were said to be devastated.

In addition jewellery, some of it of sentimental value, worth 4,780 and two laptops with family photos on them had been stolen.

A spot of blood found outside the patio doors was subsequently identified as matching Dacres, who was later arrested at his home less than half a mile away, but none of his haul was recovered.

He denied the offence, claiming he had been at a friends home during the day and had left at around 3pm and walked straight home but later pleaded guilty.

Renovations at Longview depot slow to complete - January 13, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Scaffolding used to put stucco on the ceiling sits unused in the open air pavilion at Longviews historical train depot. It is one of several projects that has remained uncompleted in the eight months since the depots grand opening.

Unexpected problems installing drainage and difficulty getting a Fort Worth contractor to finish its work are behind the slow grind finishing the renovations of the citys depot.

City Architect Brent Brevard said Mega Contractors in Fort Worth has missed its deadline to complete the project. Originally, the company was given a year from January 2013, but complications with the drainage to prevent flooding of the basement allowed the completion date to be pushed back.

It is substantially complete now. It is serving its intended purposed, but the contractor still has something that they have to come back and do, Brevard said.

We have had difficulty getting the contractor to come back. They did a big push to get to May 10 for the grand opening.

The May dedication of the depot was a huge event for the city, bringing in dignitaries with the railroad system and symbolically marking the end of renovations of the Texas Historic Landmark and Local Historical Landmark.

But Brevard said last week that the hot water heater for the facility has not been connected, nor has an air conditioning system for the basement. Additionally, work on the roof of the pavilion and finishing details such as painting, doors and door hardware are waiting to be completed.

We are holding 5 percent retainage on $1.8 million; so, we are holding a lot of money, Brevard said.

The City Council unanimously approved the contract with Mega Contractors in November 2012.

A representative for Mega Contractors was unable to be reached for contact.
