Walt Disney's Hollywood Studios - January 14, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Previously, I talked about the homes where Walt lived in and around Hollywood. For this column, I am going to share the locations of the various Disney Studios where Walt worked.

Again, let me remind readers that these are privately owned places, not tourist locations, even though two of them gladly welcome customers.

Uncle Robert Disneys Garage, 4406 Kingswell Avenue, Los Angeles, California 90027

In September 1923, Walt was living with his Uncle Robert (the younger brother of Walts father, Elias) and was unable to find any type of work at the Hollywood live action motion picture studios.

Frustrated, Walt decided to try to get back into doing animation as he had in Kansas City.

Walt bought an old used camera that was not in the best of shape, for $200 from a local Los Angeles camera shop.

His older brother Roy had given Walt $10 to make up some business cards and letterhead paper proclaiming Walt Disney, Cartoonist and using Uncle Roberts address as the location for his art studio.

Walt asked Uncle Robert if he could set up his studio in the garage adjoining the house. Robert charged Walt an additional $1 a week to use the garage, in addition to the $5 a week rent.

Walt had to tear up dry-goods boxes and find spare lumber to build a very crude camera stand and animation set-up. The equipment would not accommodate anything more complicated than the simplest of animation.

Walt went to see Alexander Pantages, who owned a theater named after him, the Pantages, in downtown Los Angeles, as well as several other theaters. Walt pitched the idea of doing a series of short 30-second joke reels, like the Laugh-O-grams he had done for the Newman theaters in Kansas City. These reels would be weekly exclusives to run during the newsreel that would help publicize Pantages theaters.

A new take on an old Queenslander - January 14, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

From a design business based in Melbourne, and in the first commission to renovate one of those traditional weatherboard Queenslanders that make the period suburbs of Brisbane so attractive, building designer Michael O'Sullivan has completed a project that has made the old house look more like its old self than it has for decades.

His New Farm clients had sought Vibe Design's input and out-of-towner status with the specific brief that they wanted a different story to what Brisbane-based architects were generally doing to update Queenslanders.

"They wanted a different interpretation," he says.

What they have got in an addition that includesa new kitchen, master bedroom, several studies, and a stunning timber internal staircase that has enabled the removal of the front-of-house stairs, is a clarified and freshened frontage, albeit with an interesting new bracketing roof structure rising on the eastern side.

O'Sullivan says this open-ended, squared-roof profile has several effects.

One is a "cradling" of the existing house, and the other is to allow the elegant lines of the original roof "to continue".

    Job Site Preparation:

Prior to installation, it is the installers responsibility to determine that the jobsite, environment and subfloor conditions all meet the requirements of the National Wood Flooring Association. Do not deliver flooring to jobsite until the building has been enclosed with windows and doors, all cement, plastering, and other wet work has been completed, and a consistent room temperature has been reached. Confirm proper drainage exists around the structure. Lack of moisture protection can allow excessive water or moisture to penetrate basement walls, flow beneath concrete slabs, basement floors, and into crawl spaces. In crawl spaces, exposed earth must be fully covered with minimum 6-mil polyethylene sheeting. Crawl space vents must be open. A moisture retardant such as 6 mil polyethylene film must be placed in crawl spaces. Heating units or non-insulated ductwork close to the flooring or subfloor may cause hot spots which must be eliminated prior to installation.

During installation, it is the installers responsibility to document all jobsite conditions and measurements including the installation date, flooring moisture content, site relative humidity, temperature, and subfloor moisture content. This information must be retained by the installer and left with the property owner as a permanent record. For a complete list of points to address prior to installation, refer to the NWFAs

    Subfloor Requirements:

General: Subfloor must be structurally sound and meet all NWFA guidelines. All subfloors must be flat to a tolerance of 3/16 in a 10 radius. Use appropriate leveling products for correcting subfloor deficiencies. Subfloor surfaces must be smooth, clean, dry and free of contaminants that would interfere with an adhesive bond. All subfloors should be tested for moisture content (see Subfloor Moisture Testing). If high moisture readings are found, identify the moisture source and correct the problem before installation. Do not install flooring directly over floor joist without proper subflooring.

Wood Subfloors: Subfloor must meet all above requirements. CD Exposure 1 plywood and OSB Exposure 1 subfloor panels are appropriate subfloor materials (grade stamped US PS1-95). Solid board subfloors should be 1 x 6 nominal, Group 1 dense softwoods, #2 Common, KD. Subfloor must be securely nailed or screwed to joists to minimize movement. Squeaky or loose boards should be reinforced by nailing/screwing every 12 on center along joists. High spots may be sanded down. Low spots should be cut out and repaired. Subfloor must be square with the space and run perpendicular to the joists, or additional subfloor thickness is required. A subfloor of 1-1/8 plywood over joists at 16 on center is recommended for optimal installation. Test subfloor moisture content. Flooring moisture content should be within 3% of subfloor moisture content. In no case should any wood moisture reading exceed 9%.

FOODIE EMPIRE: Chez Sabine in Redlands now has dinner fare - January 14, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

FOODIE EMPIRE: Chez Sabine in Redlands now has dinner fare

Served all month, this French dessert called La Galette des Rois, at Chez Sabine in Redlands.

    COURTESY OF CHEZ SABINE

Chez Sabine, a little French cafe at 615 W. State St. in Redlands, is generating a big buzz: merveilleux, magnifique, fantastique.

Those are the raves Im hearing from friends one of them a retired French teacher whos married to a Frenchman about this 2-year-old bistros sweet and savory crepes, omelets, sandwiches, salads, quiches and pastries. The special dessert this month is la galette des rois (kings cake), a buttery puff pastry filled with almond paste.

Now theres a new menu to drool over. Last week, the cafe introduced small plates paired with French and American wines, which will be regular fare 5-7 p.m. every Friday and Saturday.

Its a step-by-step approach to serving dinner, said Jeff Hecht, who owns the spot with Sabine Belhacene and her brother, Karim Belhacene.

The petite morsels will include a sort of pork pate called rillettes served with bread and mustard ($13), broiled goat cheese on toast topped with honey and herbs ($9) and a savory flan with mushrooms served cold with a tomato basil sauce and arugula ($9.50).

For information, call 909-793-2987 or visit chezsabineredlands.com.

The Inland is home to a new juice bar, with another one in the works.
