Founder of Morans Television and Appliance dies at age 82 - January 15, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

MERIDEN It was James Moran Sr.s love of electronics and tinkering with things that led him to open Morans Television and Appliance on West Main Street.

Moran operated the business for close to 30 years before retiring and turning it over to his son, Jim Moran. Despite competing with the big box stores, Morans Television and Appliance has been able to hang in there thanks in part to James Moran Sr.s relationships and personable style over the years.

My father had generations of families and customers. We could tell customers stories about their grandparents, his daughter, Cynthia Ellis, said.

James Moran Sr. died Tuesday after a lengthy illness. He was 82.

My dad was a very caring, loving, compassionate man, Ellis said. He was also very charitable. If an elderly person or a family with children didnt have a television, he would find a used one, clean it up and repair it and give it to them for free.

James Moran, Sr., husband to the late Betty Mae Moran, grew up in the city and attended Meriden High School. He served in the U.S. Army and Korean War. For a time, he was employed by the Connecticut Telephone and Electric Co. in Meriden, before founding the TV and appliance store.

He always brought the good out of people, out of any situation, current owner Jim Moran said of his father. He taught me good work ethic and the importance of family.

James Moran, Sr., is also survived by his son Garry Moran, six grandchildren, three sisters and a brother.

He was very passionate and loving, and he enjoyed the television store, Garry Moran said of his father, who retired about 20 years ago. When he was a child, he would often spend time at the store with his brother and sister tinkering with things.

Jim Moran said he and his siblings didnt see much of their father when they were young because he was so busy straddling two jobs. His father was still working full-time at the Connecticut Telephone and Electric when he opened his television and appliance store, Jim Moran said. Once the store became viable, he left his old job.

Investigators battle cold to determine cause of Fishers fire - January 15, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) The investigation continues after a big fire destroyed a luxury apartment building in Fishers.

Investigators believe it could take months before theyknow the exact cause. The fire happened at The Flats in Fishers Marketplace early Tuesday morning. The building was under construction and vacant at the time. Two other buildings, including a clubhouse onsite were not affected.

Several construction workers scoped out the fire damage Thursday afternoon, just two days after a massive fire broke out at the Flats.

I see a building thats unsafe, said John Mehling, Fishers Fire Department. Due to the weight thats on the building now.

The multi-million dollar building is one of three buildings on The Flats property. It has been under construction since last year, and was scheduled to open April.

This could be one of those situations to where the investigators just dont have enough evidence to say one way or another that this is the cause, said Mehling.

The building still stands, but investigators said the freezing temperature is turning everything inside the structure into ice.

The problem with the ice right now aside from what its doing to the structure itself, is that its incasing whatever evidence thats in there, said Mehling. So to protect the evidence, we have to be very careful removing that ice from around it.

Mehling said it could take months to find out the cause of the fire because of the extensive damage, but theres a possibility, that the cause could be undetermined.

This concludes today's live weather coverage. The most up-to-date information on the looming cold snap can be found here.

20.55 Dr Angie Bone of the extreme events team at Public Health England has warned the public to take precautions against the cold weather.

"Cold does kill, even in places where the temperatures aren't at their lowest," she said.

"Most of our advice on keeping warm in cold weather may seem like common sense, but it's important that we make the point that people should think about how cold can affect them.

"This is also a good time to think about how the bad weather may affect your friends and family, particularly if they are older or very young or have pre-existing health conditions. These groups can be particularly vulnerable to the ill-effects of cold so think now what you could do to help."

Laundry fire could have destroyed entire home - January 15, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

A QUICK response was crucial to containing a laundry fire on Terranora Rd on Thursday night.

Just after 7pm, emergency services were called to a home at Bungalora, where a washing machine was well alight.

A Fire and Rescue NSW spokeswoman said crews from Banora Point and Tweed Heads attended the home, where one female occupant had evacuated.

The spokeswoman said the electrical fire, which started inside a washing machine, was extinguished by about 7.30, before fire crews set about ventilating the home.

She said the fire was contained to the laundry room, which sustained some damage.

Banora Point Fire Station commander Daryl Pearce said if the owners hadn't been home, it could have been far more serious.

"It could have been quite a lot worse," Mr Pearce said.

"Had no one been at home, they could have lost the house

"The owners turned the power off, which was a smart move."

Mr Pearce said itwasn't clear whether or not the washing machine was running at the time.
