MORE than 30,000 of timber used to make luxury garden products has been destroyed in a factory fire.
Around 30 firefighters spent three hours tackling the blaze at Breeze House, in Leek, in the early hours of yesterday.
Crews smashed their way into the building after being alerted to the incident by a council gritting manager who saw the glow of flames inside the Sunnyhills Road building.
Now Breeze House managing director Andrew Peck has thanked the quick-thinking worker who helped to save the building from more serious damage.
Mr Peck, who founded the business with brother Chris, said: "I would love to meet the council worker who spotted the fire so I can thank him personally.
"He has made a huge difference because if the fire had gone on for another 30 minutes before the call was made then it would have caused much more damage.
"At that time of the morning it would have been quiet so it is fortunate he saw the fire."
Breeze House was founded 18 years ago and currently has 40 employees. It makes luxury garden buildings including wooden gazebos and regularly exhibits at Chelsea Flower Show.
Mr Peck added: "I had no idea how big the fire was when I got the call at 5am from my brother.

High winds have ripped through Greater Manchester overnight, closing a road and tearing down TV aerials, tiles and bricks.
A main route through Middleton town centre was shut late on Wednesday after the strong gusts partially-collapsed a building.
Market Place remained shut on Thursday morning while the structure, the former Baby World store across from Popeyes Takeaway, was assessed by council engineers.
Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service were also called.
No one was hurt during the incident but the area was deemed too unstable for pedestrians and cars to pass, police confirmed.
Firefighters were also called to two streets in Bury after TV aerials were pulled from two homes by the winds.
Crews were scrambled to Manchester Road in the town at 9pm after a 10ft mast was blown off and a satellite dish came loose.
Two hours later, shortly after 11pm, they also attended Booth Street where another aerial had come down.
The fire teams used ladders and lights to reach the damaged buildings and secure them.
