PennDOT: Work along Route 13 to pick up in spring - January 19, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Construction of Route 13 in Tullytown and Bristol Township is moving forward.

Work will begin this spring to repair and pave the concrete roadway between Green Lane and Levittown Town Center driveway intersection. Other work along the heavily traveled roadway in that stretch will include the installation of a new median curb and road improvements at Edgely Avenue and Haines Road, according to http://www.safer13.com.

Crews will lay the initial asphalt pavement in the right lanes between Levittown Parkway and the Levittown Town Center intersection and the left lanes between Green Lane and Levittown Parkway, PennDOT Assistant Press Secretary Gene Blaum said.

All major work between Green Lane and Levittown Parkway which will include the last coat of pavement on the four-lane roadway and permanent traffic signal improvements should be completed sometime this summer, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.

Weather permitting, the general contractor, James D. Morrissey Inc., of Philadelphia, will continue to back-fill and grade the median after removing the guide rail and portions of the concrete roadway to make way for grass in the newly constructed median, according to PennDOT.

But the work wont end there, as the jug handle that borders the Levittown train station will be removed so commuters can turn directly from Route 13 into the station, to be renovated by SEPTA, PennDOT spokesman Charles Metzger said. No timetable has been given for the jug handle removal, he added.

Late last year, a new traffic pattern was established between Levittown Parkway and Green Lane after asphalt paving was laid by crews in the right northbound and southbound lanes. Crews adjusted business driveways along this stretch to tie into new curbs and sidewalks recently installed, officials said.

Workers have patched deteriorated pavement and replaced underground storm water drainage facilities and utility lines in place since the 1940s. Throughout the process, workers have encountered significant additional work, including underground utilities that forced the relocation of water mains and drainage pipes, officials said.

One of the largest and most difficult underground systems was completed last spring with the installation of 54-inch diameter drainage pipes nearly 20 feet underground just north of Haines Road, officials said.

Issues with the underground utilities and extra concrete patching set back the federally funded $36.52 million project, officials said. Initially, the transportation agency anticipated an October 2015 completion date, but pushed it back to 2016 because of the utility issues, according to PennDOT.

Demolition work begins on Stollerys before heritage designation decided - January 19, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

A part of Torontos history started to come down piece by piece this weekend, just days after Councillor Kristyn Wong-Tam took steps to have the 114-year-old Stollerys building designated a heritage site.

I was really appalled to see such a sudden attempt by new owners to get rid of the building so quickly, said Adam Birrell, who has lived in the neighbourhood for six years.

The building with familiar green awnings sits at the corner of Yonge St. and Bloor St. W. and has been owned by the retailer of British and European apparel since 1901 when shoppers arrived by horse and buggy and Wilfrid Laurier was prime minister.

Birrell, who has previously worked to preserve heritage properties in Thornhill, is concerned the building is being taken down before the city can determine whether it has heritage value. If the site already was listed as a heritage property, it couldnt be torn down as easily.

But developer Sam Mizrahi says he doesnt think the building deserves preservation.

We dont feel there is any heritage value to it and neither did anyone else for the last 100 years, he said.

And Mizrahi is well within his legal rights. He bought the building in October and applied for a demolition permit earlier this month. It was approved on Friday and the work started right away.

Wong-Tam noted that the city must issue a permit when all statutory requirements are met according to provincial law.

She asked it be considered for heritage designation at a Jan. 13 community council meeting the first opportunity she said she had to bring up the issue after the election.

I moved as quickly as I could, she said.

Decks cleared for Bargur cattle research station - January 19, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

The Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University has initiated steps to establish a research centre for Bargur breed of cattle in the district.

The University is close to finalising the site for the research station mandated with the task of propagating population of the indigenous breed on Bargur hills, according to official sources.

    Long-felt need

The Animal Husbandry Ministry's sanction signifies fulfilment of a long-felt need of the farmers who are mostly Kannada-speaking Lingayat community people.

The rearers, who used to maintain large herds that grazed in forest land, were spared of the fodder cost. But now they have scaled down the numbers due to restrictions imposed by the Forest Department.

With the research station in place, the prospect for farmers taking up cattle-rearing as a major income-generation activity could be revived, according to E.N. Sivasenapathy, president of Bargur Hill Cattle Breeders' Association.

For the first time last year, the Animal Husbandry Department conducted an exhibition for the Bargur breed at Thurasanampalayam on the hills.

Farmers say the research station will be helpful in enhancing purity of the breed that has a high resistance capacity to diseases. There is a niche market for ghee, butter and other products made of milk of native breed cows. The products are sold for a premium, Mr. Sivasenapathi said.

Also, Bargur cattle, despite their small size, are sturdy and are capable of hauling heavy loads with ease, and small-scale farmers mainly depend on this breed to plough fields. The hooves of this breed are naturally strong and do not require horseshoes.

This breed is suited to work in uneven hilly terrains. The animals are known for their speed and endurance in trotting.
