Karkala decks up for 'Mahamastakabhisheka' - January 20, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Karkala (Udupi dist), Jan 20, 2015, DHNS

Karkala town is gearing up for Mahamastakabhisheka - the head anointment ceremony of the 42-foot Bahubali statue from January 21 to 31. Preparations are on in full swing at the foothills of the Bahubali Betta.

The ritual, held once in 12 years for every Gomateshwara statue, is now taking place in Karkala for the monolithic statue of Lord Bahubali on the hilltop. The statue was installed in 1432. Arrangements have been made to accommodate lakhs of devotees and guests expected for the ceremony.

The Mahamastakabhisheka will begin with 108 kalashas and 1008 kalashas would be kept for poojas on the 10th day.

The ceremonial anointing is done from the top of the specially constructed scaffolding, wherein water from 1008 kalashas (pots) are poured over the statue as a purification rite. Following this, the ceremonial bathing begins with jalabhisheka (pouring of water) and ksheerabhisheka (milk from kalashas and large containers). This is followed by pouring of a large amount of rice powder. Next, the statue is anointed with coconut water and sugarcane juice (ikshu rasa). The monolith is then bathed with a liquid mixture of turmeric, Red Sanders and sandalwood.

Later, the statue is bathed with kashaya, a concoction of ashtagandha (eight fragrant substances). This is followed lastly by a shower of flower petals. The ceremony ends with the washing of the Gomateshwara with the clear waters of the poorna kumbhas and an arti of lamps.

Except for ksheerabhisheka, all other abhishekas will be in the capacity of 300-500 litres, so as to wet the entire statue. Around 750 litres of milk is used for ksheerabhisheka.

Speaking to mediapersons, Mahamastakabhisheka committee working president M N Rajendra Kumar said that a full-fledged transport system has been provided, including good roads. There will be special parking zones. The stretch of road connecting the hilltop to the foot of the hills has been made motorable. Facilities like drinking water and toilets have also been provided to the devotees.

As many as 35 acres of land is earmarked for parking. The space around the Bahubali statue has been kept open for the devotees to have an obstruction-free view of the rituals.

The rectangular shaped arena can accommodate 1,500 to 2,000 devotees at a time. Kumar said that healthcare arrangements had been made with mobile hospitals on the top and foot of the hill. He said hygiene and security were utmost priorities.

Mississippi Power employees use day off to spruce up East Biloxi park - January 20, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

    BILOXI, MS (WLOX) -

Some employees of a large company chose to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr's legacy through service, Monday. They worked together to make a difference in one east Biloxi neighborhood.

Under sunny skies they toiled, trying to beautify John Henry Beck Park on Division Street. About 20 Mississippi Power employees turned their day off into a day of service.

"Martin Luther King was all about service and serving other people and that's what we encourage our employees to do. You can see a lot of people have pitched in their time to come out here and work for a good cause," said Mississippi Power District Manager Stephen Schruff.

One crew rebuilt a ramp for the gazebo, while another group of volunteers painted the front and back porches of the "Coastal Women for Change" office building.

"It's overwhelming. It's a blessing. It's humbling the fact that people gave up their day to help others. And Martin would love this, because this is what he was talking about. He's saying come together, equality," said Coastal Women for Change Executive Director Sharon Hanshaw.

Kenneth Means brought his two children to help spruce-up the Community Garden. They tilled the dirt, raked, and cleaned-up the area.

"Go over there and get that trash. See it trash on that fence?" he told his six-year-old son Kenneth Means, III.

The Mississippi Power engineer wanted to show his children how they can put King's message into action.

"I think it's important as parents, and also as an African-American father, that we allow our kids to see us go out and have a day of caring. Today, while it is a holiday, it's really not a day off. So for my kids, I think it's important that we lead by example," said Means.

Church to help build St. Nicholas Shrine - January 20, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Rendering of Saint Nicholas National Shrine being built at the World Trade Center. Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church in Cardiff is supporting the project.

ENCINITAS Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church in Cardiff is supporting the construction of the Saint Nicholas National Shrine at the World Trade Center through donations from parishioners and community members.

The parish, which has hosted the annual Cardiff Greek Festival in September for 36 years, is set to donate 10 percent of this years festival profits along with stewardship donations from parishioners throughout the year.

The Saint Nicholas National Shrine is being built at Ground Zero, replacing the small Greek Orthodox Church of Saint Nicholas that was destroyed on September 11, 2001 when the South Tower fell after the terrorist attack.

The new church is Greek Orthodox, but it welcomes people of all faiths to visit while touring the 9/11 Memorial and Memorial Museum at the World Trade Center.

The estimated cost of building the shrine is about 38 million and the projected completion date is in 2016, which marks the churchs 100-year anniversary. It was built in 1916.

The shrine, designed by world-renowned architect Santiago Calatrava, will blend the traditions of Byzantine architecture with the steel and glass buildings in the surrounding area. The upper level of the church will include a non-denominational bereavement space, also open to all.

The genesis of this project came from the good will of our faithful as they were moved by the 911 tragedy, said Father Michael Sitaras, pastor at Saints Constantine and Helen. We as Orthodox Christians, while rebuilding the Saint Nicholas Shrine for ourselves at Ground Zero, are simultaneously rebuilding a shrine for all the nations to come, reflect and worship. Community members can support the building of the shrine by sending a check, earmarked for Saint Nicholas Shrine, to Sts. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church, 3459 Manchester Avenue, Cardiff, CA. 92007.

For information about the shrine visit stnicholaswtc.org or about the parish, visit stsconstantinehelen.com or call (760) 942-0920.
