UPDATED at 12:00 P.M. with interviews at the scene.
GRANITE CITY By his own count, Erick Larson took 15,000 pictures last year.
On Tuesday, Larson joined more than 150 people who gathered to watch - and, in some cases, photograph - the first of three explosive demolitions of the old Chain of Rocks Canal bridge that once carried Interstate 270.
"I'm a photo nut," Larson, a Collinsville resident, said shortly before the former eastbound span was blasted and its tangled remains fell into the canal. "I'd never done an explosion. No video. Nature. Sporting events."
Illinois transportation officials closed a stretch of I-270 in both directions prior to the blast. The stretch of highway was expected to reopen by noon.
The two 50-year-old canal bridges were replaced last year with a new span.
Kim Green of Granite City used a half day of vacation to snap some pictures of the demolition.
"It's not going to be the same with it gone," Green said after the explosion. "It's going to change the landscape of our area."
An explosion took down a stretch of one span about 10:30 a.m.

Ottawas planning committee has recommended to city council a planto partially demolisha heritage home once belonging to a prominent Ottawa family.
The 160-year-old Charles Billings home on Billings Avenue once belonged to the son of Ottawa pioneers Bradish and Lamira Billings, whose estate a few blocks away is a national historic site.
Last week the citys heritage subcommittee narrowly approved a staff recommendation to demolish 20 per cent of a wing of the storey-and-a-half white clapboard home and add a large addition.
"When did we cross that line? If you have a new foundation, some new siding, new windows, how are we saving a building if there's very little left of what it originally was?"said Sandy Smallwood, a developer and citizen member of the subcommittee, who voted against the plan.
Subcommittee chair and city councillor Tobi Nussbaum voted in favour of the plan, saying the homes historic character will remain.
"The addition was clearly demarcated from the actual building through a breezeway, that meansthe original house sits on its own and has its own visual character and impact,"he said Monday in advance of Tuesday's vote.
Wittthe approval of the planning committee, the proposed partial demolition will next go to city council.

An overpass undergoing demolition collapsed on Interstate 75 in Cincinnati late Monday, killing a construction worker and injuring a semi tractor-trailer driver, emergency officials said.
The collapse occurred at approximately 10:30 p.m. local time, and sent several hundred tons of concrete tumbling to the road below. Cincinnati Police Chief Jeffrey Blackwell told Fox19 that he expects the southbound side of Interstate 75 to be closed for about 48 hours.
Cincinnati City Manager Harry Black described the collapse as "in essence, an industrial accident ... Something went wrong, and a tragedy has occurred as a result." Black said that authorities did not believe that there were any further casualties.
The injured driver was taken to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center. His injuries were described as minor and not life-threatening. No identifying information about either victim was immediately available.
"The big-rig driver is very lucky," Blackwell said. "In a matter of seconds his fate would have probably been different." Fire officials said the tractor-trailer struck the collapsed section as the bridge hit the ground.
There was no immediate indication of the cause of the collapse. Blackwell said the city will work with the Department of Transportation to figure out what happened.
A message on the city of Cincinnati's official Twitter account warned drivers to "plan ahead, leave early, [and] expect delays."
"This will be a mess," Blackwell told the Cincinnati Enquirer. "It's not could or should. It will be."
The Enquirer reported that a man's body was removed from the rubble at about 3 a.m. Tuesday.

Building on the major success of their original co-location in 2014 as Design & Construction Week, the National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA) and the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) today announced that KBIS and IBS will continue to co-locate through 2020 as one of the worlds largest gatherings focused on new ideas, products and technologies to design, build and remodel homes.
Design & Construction Week 2015, opening today and running until Jan. 22, is expected to draw more than 125,000 specifiers, builders, dealers and suppliers, more than 300 members of the media and 3,750 exhibiting brands. The announcement of this lasting partnership will be a major highlight of this opening day, as exhibitors and attendees alike have fully expressed their excitement about the partnership.
In only its second year, Design & Construction Week is already the mega-event of the industry, said Maria Stapperfenne, CKD, CBD, 2015 NKBA president. All of our professionals can come together once a year to see the newest products and design trends, build relationships and benefit from all the cutting-edge professional development.
The 2016 mega-event will be held Jan. 19-21, 2016, in Las Vegas, with IBS again occupying the Central Hall and KBIS occupying the North and South Halls. One pass will continue to provide access to both separate exhibits. NKBA and NAHB will continue to produce separate educational programming and special events. Future show dates are Jan. 10-12, 2017, and Jan. 9-11, 2018, when the event will move to the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando.
Given the success of the last two years, our manufacturers have overwhelmingly embraced Design & Construction Week, said Brian Pagel, VP, Kitchen & Bath, Emerald Expositions. Were excited at the proposition of continuing this wonderful partnership through 2020.
KBIS, now in its 51st year, is the largest event in North America focused on the kitchen and bath segment, attracting more than 700 exhibitors. IBS, now in its 71st year, is the largest annual light construction show in the world. Builders, remodelers, developers, architects and other industry professionals from more than 100 countries attend to see the latest products and services from nearly 1,000 exhibitors in more than 200 construction categories.
