Nancy Simmons Starrs is president and founder ofApartment Detectives, a D.C., Maryland and Northern Virginia apartment search service.
During the course of my work day, many clients request that I search in the District and in Maryland or D.C. and Virginia to give them an idea of which area they like the best and which area might be best value for their rent dollars spent.
It is lucky that in the DMV area, we have a good variety of walkable areas to choose from. I thought I would compare a one-bedroom apartment in downtown D.C. close to the Mount Vernon Metro station with a one- bedroom unit in downtown Bethesda. These are two very similar properties with similar amenities of similar size.
Bainbridge Bethesda
Bainbridge Bethesda is a newer property in downtown Bethesda that currently has one-bedroom units that are 711 square feet from $1,940 to $2,030 plus utilities.
Pets are allowed with some restrictions.
The property has a 24-hour concierge, a fitness center, a roof top deck with grills and an outdoor pool. There is an interactive cyber cafe with a separate conference center. Reserved garage parking is available for $175 monthly.
The apartments have granite countertops and stainless-steel appliances in the kitchens. Wood-style flooring is in the kitchen, living and dining rooms. A washer and dryer are in the apartment.

"(At every start of a new year, people resort to coming up with all sorts of resolutions they would like to accomplish. Some of these promises range from becoming fit and healthy, to mastering financial strategies. So in line with this, Sun.Star Cebu Live! dedicates every Wednesday of January to presenting a series of how-to stories. Enjoy!)"
ONE of the more popular items that often finds itself as a New Years resolution is getting the house tidied up.
And unlike a few others, it does actually get done! Partly thanks to a superstition of how its supposed to symbolize getting rid of bad luck. In any case, the challenge lies in how to keep this goal until the end of the yearand no, asking your housekeeper to do it doesnt count.
Here are a few tips, paired with insights by budding interior decorator Erika Joan Ong, on how to do it rightthat is, create a home thats cleverly organized and clutter-free, and how to keep it that way for the next 11 months.
Theres certainly no room for messor excusesthis 2015.
Dont be a packrat
See those paper bags you left lying on the floor because you havent decided if youre throwing them or keeping them because they might be handy someday? Well, someday is too vague of a word, and the next thing you know you just piled up an eyesore in the middle of your bedroom. Give away or donate things you do not need or see yourself using anymore, Erika commentsor sell them perhaps. A clever trick of achieving this is through the Four Box Method come cleaning day. Get three boxes; label each one with storage, give/sell and put away; place them next to the trash bin (the fourth box), and simply toss whatever item to its respective box. Keep only the essential!

Attitash parties it up for No. 50 -

Fifty years ago this coming week, something big happened in Mount Washington Valley: Attitash Ski Area began spinning its lifts for the first time into a long history of success and improvements.
When Attitash opened in January 1965, it became known as the red carpet ski area, for its customer service and business philosophy of limiting lifts lines by limiting the number of tickets sold daily, an innovation in the industry back then.
Through the years, Attitash became known for not just that but its top-rated competitive racing program, which produced more than a few national and international contenders, its nationally known Red Parka Pub Ski Race each season, which draws the strongest local racers and some from all over as well, and of course, an active apres scene that filled the pub all winter and the outside lounge chairs each spring.
In the mid-1990s, Attitash dramatically increased the available skiing and riding acreage by developing the Bear Peak area that included the installation of a high-speed summit quad chairlift as well as open glades, wider intermediate terrain, some of the states most sought after alpine race trails, including the resorts signature trail, Illusion, and the Attitash Grand Summit Hotel.
Acquired by Peak Resorts in 2007, Attitash Mountain Resort continues to grow, yet holds onto that classic dedication to great skiing and a great vibe. With their sisterhood with nearby Wildcat Mountain, skiers and riders can now ski both resorts on the same day with the same lift ticket.
Attitash will be celebrating its 50th birthday on Jan. 26, and everyone is invited to the party.
To kick off the celebration, lift tickets will cost just $19.65 that day. (And in true family spirit, Wildcat will offer the same deal.) There will be a huge celebration and party in Ptarmigans Pub from 2-5 p.m. with live music from local favorites Shark Martin.
Everyone will be entered in a free raffle in which 50 prizes will be given away to celebrate 50 years, including special Attitash 50th anniversary T-shirts, gift cards, vertical value cards, summer ticket packs and one special Grand Prize.
Everyone will also take home a free commemorative poster and a special vintage Attitash logo die-cut sticker to add to your car or ski box.
More information on the celebration can be found at http://www.attitash.com.

Is Your House Making You Sick? -

Its a threat you cant see, kills 21,000 Americans each year, and it could be in your home right now. The only way to find out, is to test for it.
The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has designated January as National Radon Action Month. Radon is an odorless, invisible and tasteless gas released in rock, soil and water and it can build up to dangerous levels in your home, whether new or old, well-sealed or drafty, and with or without a basement. It is usually harmless outdoors, but when the gas is trapped in a building or home, it can be a health hazard. Unfortunately, many people tend to ignore that it might exist at high levels in their home. The truth is radon has been found in every state and vary from home to home even in the same neighborhood. You could have a significantly different level than even your neighbor next door.
Breathing radon can increase your risk of lung cancer. In fact, radon is the number one cause of lung cancer among non-smokers and the second leading cause among smokers. Children are more sensitive to radon because their lungs are smaller and their respiratory rates are twice as high. By the age of 10, a child receives twice the lung dose of an adult whos been exposed to radon for the same length of time. If you are a smoker and you have a high concentration of radon in your home, you are at an even greater risk. The good news is the risk of lung cancer from radon is the easiest to avoid.
Testing radon levels in quick, easy, and affordable, and prevent unnecessary exposure. If a high radon level is detected in your home, you can take steps to fix the problem.
Testing for Radon The best time to test for radon is during the colder months when the windows and doors are closed. Where can you get a kit? Some state radon offices, especially during National Radon Month, may offer kits for free or at a discount. Most home improvement and hardware stores sell test kits for under $25 or a kit can be ordered online. Testing is as easy as opening a package, following the directions for where to place the kit, and sending it to the company indicated on the package to receive your test results. Most testing last between 2 and 7 days. You can also hire a qualified radon tester.
Fixing High Radon Levels If the test results show your home has high radon, dont panic; the problem can be fixed. Consult an EPA-qualified or state-certified radon contractor who can evaluate the problem and determine the right solution. To find qualified contractors in your area, click here. Repairs focus on steps to keep radon from coming into your home, including sealing cracks in floors and walls to changing the flow of air into the home. If you are remodeling or building a new home, installing a simple ventilation system can prevent radon gas from seeping in.
Dont delay; take action today! And remember, radon testing should not be a one-time thing. The ground under your home can always shift, so it is important to have a radon test at least every five years or after any remodel or addition to your home.

"I thought that it would be the best thing for us to build something this nice for the people of bowling green and surrounding counties, that's family oriented. That's what we wanted to do and that's what we did do," said Walker.
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (WBKO) -- Bowling Green is home to the only state of the art, indoor shooting range in the Commonwealth and employees say it's the best indoor range in the country. Walker Arms indoor range has been open for nearly two months, but what makes it state of the art?
Range Manager, Trent Young, says the most important feature is that it does not recirculate air as most indoor ranges do, providing a more mediocre smell and making it healthier for shooters.
"Air comes in and it gets heated or cooled. It goes down range then it gets pulled out and filtered. It is HEPA filtered before it's released back into the atmosphere," said Young.
The range also has LED lighting, interactive targets, and an on sight NRA certified range safety officer at all times. It also has 12 lanes with four by eight foot booths, separated by four inches of concrete on each side.
Many online residents had issues with an indoor range being built in what they considered a residential area. The Bowling Green Planning and Zoning Commission says the building was zoned to be used for indoor entertainment, including shooting ranges. That building was zoned for light industrial, meaning the only stipulation was the building had to be sound proof.
"We had qualified engineers to engineer this range to make sure that the sound proofing was the way it should be by code. Actually, we went even further than that. We've done a lot more insulation and more sealing and things of that nature to make sure it happened," said Claudis Walker, CEO and President of Walker Arms.
Walker said he put a lot of time and money into this project.
"I thought that it would be the best thing for us to build something this nice for the people of Bowling Green and surrounding counties, something that is family oriented. That's what we wanted to do and that's what we did do," said Walker.
