Chinese man missing in West Auckland - January 21, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Police

An elderly Chinese man who went missing while on a walk in Auckland two days ago has been found dehydrated, but otherwise well.

Wang Dao, 74, went for a walk in the Green Bay area on Monday morning.

He was found today collapsed on the doorstep by the owner of a Swanson Rd home, apparently after travelling about nine kilometres.

Dao was checked by ambulance staff, and though dehydrated he was otherwise well and did not need to go to hospital, police said.

A police search and rescue team had scoured Wang's two usual walking routes, as well as a number of public areas, parks and streets yesterday.

The police Eagle helicopter was also called in to help.

He was fit and healthy but was not familiar with the area and did not speak English, police said.

Dao had no cellphone or access to money and did not know anyone in the area.

Police have thanked the public for their help in finding him.

Search continues for missing Chinese visitor - January 21, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Waitemata Police are asking people in the Green Bay area to check sheds and garages as the search for a missing Chinese gentleman continues.

Mr Wang Dao, a 74 year-old visitor from China, hasn't been seen since leaving his Bishop Street address at 11am on Monday to go for his usual walk.

Mr Wang is fit and healthy but doesn't speak English, and has no money or cellphone.

On Tuesday a Police Search and Rescue team scoured the two routes Mr Wang normally took, as well as searching a number of public areas, parks and streets.

The Police Eagle Helicopter will continue to do sweeps of the shoreline today and Search and Rescue will assess any further possible search areas.

"We've had several members of the public call us with sightings and we're working through those as we get them, but at this time Mr Wang remains missing and we'd ask anyone who lives in the Green Bay area to check any sheds, garages or outbuildings that they may have" says Sgt Marianne Dempster, Waitakere Police.

Anyone who may have seen Mr Wang or knows where he is should call 111.

Nonprofit: Eastwood film sheds light on plight of the sniper - January 21, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

    HENDERSON, NV (FOX5) -

In its first weekend, director Clint Eastwood's American Sniper has earned a record-setting $105 million at the box office.

A nonprofit group devoted to aiding military snipers is pleased the film is bringing attention to the difficult situations faced by many of the sharpshooters.

American Snipers was created 13 years ago by a small group of police snipers who wished to help their military counterparts. They raise money for snipers who in some instances have to pay for their own equipment and have it shipped to them by their families.

"There was certain gear that they didn't have when they were being issued certain types of weapons. We can get them things like laser rangefinders so they can figure out their distance," David Agata with American Snipers said.

American Sniper recounts the story of Chris Kyle, a Navy SEAL who proclaimed to be the most lethal sniper in U.S. military history.

"The time it takes to train, the time it takes to shoot, the minimal strength you have to have to do your job and still maintain your family - most people don't have to deal with that," Brian Sain with American Snipers said.

Sain said snipers get a bad rap, many people considering them cold-blooded killers.

"If someone was holding a knife to your throat or your child's throat, you need someone with the mental stability to make a lawful, legal decision to use deadly force to stop that person from hurting an innocent," he said.

"It's easy for certain voices to speak out and criticize, but until you've walked in someone's shoes who's there to protect you, you can say what you want," Agata said.

Piper NV review: Icontrol adds night vision to its connected-home hub/security camera - January 21, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

When we got our hands on the original Icontrol Piper in July 2014, we concluded that the security-camera/Z-Wave-hub combo had room to grow. The addition of night vision (a $70 premium over the original device, which remains available) is a good step forward for the hardware, but the Piper's true potential remains untapped.

The night-vision camera looks nearly identical to the original. You get the same sleek design, the same great 180-degree lens, the same great array of sensors, and the same Z-Wave hub. The new camera works with the same app, and it integrated seamlessly with the two Pipers Icontrol had sent previously (the app can manage up to five Pipers).

You'll only notice the difference when the soft red glow of infrared illumination fires up around the Piper's lens as it goes into night-vision mode. On the inside, the night-vision Piper packs a faster ARM processor and a higher-resolution 3.4 megapixel camera that delivers 1080p resolution.

Curiously, the faster processor doesn't seem to be enough to power the switch over to night vision. The camera will switch automatically based on the ambient light, or you can switch manually between modes. In practice, I found that it favored day mode even in low light when some other cameras (such as the D-Link DCS-825L baby monitor I reviewed recently) would have switched to night mode.

The Piper nv struggled with its switch to night-vision mode.

When I forced the Piper NV to switch, it was very sluggish to update, leaving a long green screen and then a very pixelated picture for several minutes while the bit stream caught up. Parts of the image rendered clearly, but any movement turned into a pixelated mess, despite being set to use maximum bandwidth for local network streaming. Video from the regular cameras was still smooth, so it's unlikely my home network was throttling the Piper NV's video stream to such low quality.

The software is so intuitive that my two-year-old was able to add a smart plug with minimal coaching. He enjoys turning a lamp on and off through the Piper app. I'm a fan of the home vitals tab as well, which shows stats per Piper, illustrating temperature and humidity differences between levels of our 100-year-old home.

One of several errors I encountered on opening the Piper app.

The app can use temperature alerts to control an air conditioner or heater plugged into one of the smart plugs to keep the temperature under control, but I wish I could have used the humidity levels to trigger a dehumidifier.

Sadly, the software frustrations covered in our Piper review from July are mostly still around. Alerts can now be dismissed by tapping the current mode on the dashboard, so there is now no need to change modes just to clear an alert. But there is still no way to save video.

End of the road for Root Five in Hamburg - January 21, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Root Five, the lakeside restaurant in Hamburg, served its last meals on New Years Eve. Owner Dave Root is inviting inquiries from qualified operators.

Twenty-two years is a long time, said Root, who took over the building at 4914 Lakeshore Road in 1992. That place burned down, and Root, who was in the construction business, built a new place with a big deck looking out over Lake Erie.

Hes facing relationship problems, but thats not why he decided to step away, he said. Twenty-two years standing in a bar, sometimes you just need a break, he said. Now is the time.

Among his motivations are memories of a veteran bartender and friend, Brian McGinty, who died behind the bar last year. He was 57. I knew him for 20 years, said Root.

Hes not a restaurateur at heart, Root said, but a construction guy who ended up running a place. Ive been muscling through the thing for a long, long time. I turned 60 this year, and I said there are some things I dont want to regret on that last bed of mine. So Id rather go do them now.

He stopped selling gift certificates in December. Patrons can call him at 627-5551 to redeem outstanding ones.

Roots building has 150 seats inside, and another 150 on the deck in good weather. Bands played in a side room. He said hes confident he can find someone to take over the place. Theres no replacing the view.

There are days when a storm would come rolling down the lake, you can see them coming from the west, and just hit the place like a ton of bricks, Root said. Ive had people standing in the dining room with their plates. Id apologize, and say sorry about this. Some of them would say Well hell, that was the most amazing thing I ever saw.

Opening: A former Perkins on Transit Road in Amherst will become an English-style pub by March 1.

Tavern at Windsor Park, at 8444 Transit Road, will be run by Keith Morgan. He helped open the Buffalo Brew Pub, the areas first brew pub, in 1986, where he was general manager until last year.
