Johns Manville Debuts Spider Plus Blow-in Insulation - January 22, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

DENVER, CO -- Building products manufacturer Johns Manville announced the launch of JM Spider Plus blow-in insulation, a re-engineered blow-in system and the latest addition to the industry's most complete line of insulation products. JM Spider Plus replaces JM Spider spray-in fiber glass insulation and is ideal for residential, commercial and manufactured buildings.

JM Spider Plus is designed for installation by professionals using a blowing wool machine and features "Interlocking Fiber Technology," JM's latest building science innovation. Interlocking Fiber Technology allows the insulation fibers to spring and lock into cavities with no adhesive or netting. JM Spider Plus achieves an R-value of 15 in a 2x4 cavity and an R-23 in 2x6 walls.

    Additional performance advantages include:

Flexible installation: Installs and dries quickly for same-day drywall installation - saving time and money

Clean: Minimal dust and easy clean up on jobsites compared to other spray-in systems

"We re-engineered JM Spider -- one of our signature products -- to meet the evolving needs of our customers," said Todd Bridgeford, product manager for Johns Manville. "Professional insulation installers want products that offer cost- and time-effective solutions, and our new Interlocking Fiber Technology delivers the performance enhancements and ease of installation needed for today's increasingly demanding project requirements."

"We've been installing JM Spider blow-in insulation since 2005, and it's become a favorite product of ours," said Ron Novak, owner of Advanced Insulation Systems, Inc., in Traverse City, Mich. "JM Spider Plus held together in wall cavities and in overhead applications, and we're excited to incorporate it into our product portfolio moving forward."

JM Spider Plus is available to customers in North America immediately. To learn more, visit JM.com or talk to a product manager.

Vets aim to complete Toby Pennels road plan - January 22, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Posted: Friday, January 9, 2015 11:14 am | Updated: 11:26 am, Fri Jan 9, 2015.

When the late Toby Pennels became president of the Windham Veterans Association, the Casco-based financial adviser set out to resurrect the groups flagging finances. Key to the effort was Pennels plan to pave the Windham Veterans Centers bumpy dirt access road and parking lot behind the Windham Mall.

Once the road and parking lot were paved, Pennels figured, the center would see a spike in income from hall rentals. Upon assuming the association presidency in summer 2012, Pennels established a paving account.

The account had accrued about $4,000 by September 2014, when Pennels died as a result of injuries sustained in a motorcycle crash in Rangeley.

On Monday, the association kicked off Tobys Dream, a fundraiser at the center in Pennels honor. The goal is to grow the paving account to $50,000 by Memorial Day, and pave the access road and parking lot. The association has also obtained town approval to rename the access road the Toby Pennels Veterans Memorial Drive.

About 40 people attended the event, which was pioneered by Don Swander, the associations president from 2005-2012. According to Swander, nine donors contributed $6,620 in total at the fundraiser, swelling the associations paving account to $10,788.

Two weeks before Pennels motorcycle accident, Swander and Pennels stood at the entrance to the access road at the rear of the Windham Mall parking lot and debated whether to pave the access road and the parking lot, or take one at a time, Swander recalled Monday.

Toby was adamant that we must do them at the same time, Swander said. He assured me that his business plan would make the veterans center self-sufficient. He said, We need to pave right to here and there was no question in my mind that thats what was going to happen. He looked at me with that great Toby smirky smile that he got sometimes and said firmly, Don, if we pave it, they will come.

And I tell you, Kevin Costner could not have said it any better, Swander added.

According to Swander, the paving project will allow the association to make significant improvements and upgrades to the centers building and grounds. These improvements, along with the paving, will significantly increase rental income, Swander said, thereby making the center financially self-sustaining.

Scandia OK's narrow Log House Landing boat launch road - January 22, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Judge John Nethaway's cottage at Log House Landing on the St. Croix River is pictured circa 1903. At right on the river's edge are a canvas shelter and flag pole. The site was a steamboat landing in the 1850s and is now a public boat landing owned by the city of Scandia. Plans to widen the roadway leading to the landing have upset some residents, who hope to work with the city to help preserve the area's rural character. (Courtesy of Washington County Historical Society)

A narrow, tree-lined gravel road that leads to the Log House Landing boat launch on the St. Croix River is going to stay narrow and tree-lined, but the road and an adjacent parking lane on the north side will be paved.

The Scandia City Council on Tuesday night approved the Log House Landing committee's recommendation that the road be paved and be 13 feet wide but went against the committee's recommendation that the parking lane remain gravel.

City staff had recommended a 20-foot-wide paved road.

"I am certainly pleased that the council approved a narrower driveway that will allow for the preservation of the original contour of the road," said Pam Plowman Smith, a committee member and a spokeswoman for Friends of Log House Landing. "But our committee does not feel that paving the additional parking lane is wise. We hope to continue discussions."

The advisory committee, which was appointed by the council in October, consisted of representatives from the city council, planning commission, Carnelian-Marine-St. Croix Watershed District, St. Croix River Association and the public.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and the Carnelian-Marine Watershed District still must sign off on the plans, said City Administrator Kristina Handt. If both of those agencies approve and help fund the plan, construction could start in late July or early August, she said.

"The city looks forward to implementing this compromise proposal to protect the St.

City officials said the work was needed to improve traffic flow and halt erosion; opponents said the changes would be too severe and disturb the environment.
