When Anthony Minko was designing his new office in Brooklyn, the estate planning attorney knew that it needed to feel calm and supportive.
After all, a place where people talked about what will happen after they die should feel secure.
So Minko who had studied the spend idly slow martial art tai chi hired RD Chin, a New-York based feng shui architect.
"The whole process started with our values in the law firm," Minko said said, "how we care about keeping families together across the generations, where grandparents can come with children and grandchildren."
"What surprised me was how practical the feng shui principles were," he said.
Literally translating aswind-waterfrom Chinese, feng shui has been practiced for at least 1700 yearsin Asia before becoming popular in the US in the 1980s.
Chin, whose lectures are on YouTube, argues that everybody can sense feng shui it's simply thehow-it-feelsquality of being in a place. If you feel inspired, creative, and capable in an office, then it's got some positive feng shui going on, but if you feel trapped, blocked, and insecure, then it's some poor feng shui, and your productivity will suffer as a result.
Vancouver-based feng shui consultant Rodika Tchi said that feng shui is "acupuncture for a space," a way of increasing the sense of harmony in a room.
So how can we use these principles to improve our work spaces? Here are some tips from Chin and Tchi:
"In most businesses, somehow we overlook the quality of air," Tschi said, because "we get used to poor quality air very quickly."

A City of Longmont snowplow is seen on Airport Road near the entrance to Vance Brand Municipal Airport Wednesday. (Matthew Jonas / Longmont Times-Call)
This winter's persistent snow storms and below freezing temperatures has presented a problem for companies leasing hangar space at the Vance Brand Municipal Airport.
Assistant City Manager Shawn Lewis, who is overseeing airport operations while a replacement is chosen for former airport manager Tim Barth, said that the storms prompted several complaints from companies that fly out of the airport about snow on the runways and taxiways.
Although the airport is next door to the city's public works operations building where the city deploys its snowplows, the double and single-bladed plows are generally not used inside the airport, Lewis said.
"The city equipment we have is dedicated to the streets and the airport is an enterprise fund," Lewis said. Enterprise funds must support themselves through earned revenue and other monies, and is not fully subsidized by city coffers.
"The other reasons is because, well obviously the public works equipment is fully deployed on city streets in the event of a storm because that's its primary function," Lewis said.
The solution is that some of the private companies stationed at the airport contract with separate snow removal companies. For the rest of the shared space some of the runways and taxiways in 2010 the city contracted with Mile-Hi Airport Services, a company that is also owned by the owners of Mile-Hi Skydiving.
Under that contract, the city pays Mile-Hi Airport Services $60 an hour to remove snow when it's preventing the airport from functioning. Mile-Hi Airport Services is also contracted at $60 an hour to mow some parts of the airport and public works facility lawn and sweep debris from the taxiways and runways. Since the contract was first signed in 2010, it has been renewed the maximum number of four times annually, and the service will be bid out to prospective snow removal companies at the end of April this year.
One problem was that snow storms in November and December resulted in constant snowfall that hardened and iced over before it could be plowed by both Mile-Hi and the other contracted companies, making it difficult to plow away. The other problem is an unintentional consequence of a new airport improvement.
In 2013, the airport received a $400,000 grant from the state that it matched with $44,000 to buy and install better perimeter fencing to improve security. Most of that new fencing went up just before Barth resigned Dec. 19

ZOE ADAMS riding SATONAMILLION in The Amlin Plus Eventing Grand Prix
Eventers will be back at Hickstead this summer after the loss of the eventing grand prix in 2014.
The popular class in which eventers and showjumpers went head-to-head over a range of coloured poles and fixed cross-country fences was traditionally held on the Thursday of the Royal International Horse Show. But in 2014 it was withdrawn from the programme as Sky Sports dropped Thursdays coverage, meaning that action from the cross-country fences in the grounds would not have been filmed and relayed back to the arena screens.
However, to solve this problem the class has been reformatted into the eventers challenge.
The class will now be kept within the arena and only event riders will be eligible to compete, which will allow the cross-country fences to become more technical and demanding.
Lots of equestrian fans were upset by the loss of the former eventing grand prix class, so were very pleased to be launching the eventers challenge in its place, said Hicksteads Lizzie Bunn.
This year the course will be designed by Richard Taylor. Mr Taylor has been part of the course-building team at two European eventing championships, the Asian Games and the Beijing Olympics.
All the fences will be rustic cross-country obstacles, with some fixed fences and others that can be knocked down.
A number of top riders have won the title during the class sixteen-year history, including eventers Pippa Funnell, Andrew Nicholson and Lucinda Fredericks, plus showjumpers Michael Whitaker and Shane Breen.
There have been some very illustrious eventing champions competing at Hickstead over the years, and were pleased to be inviting the countrys top names once again, added Lizzie.

Manama: Saudi Arabia border security forces both in the north and south of the kingdom are ready to deal with any situation, including shooting any infiltrators trying to cross into the country illegally, a security official has said.
They are well prepared in light of the events unfolding in some of Saudi Arabias neighbouring countries and they have the authority to reciprocate and shoot any illegal infiltrators, Mohammad Al Ghamdi, the spokesperson for the border security forces, said.
The plan to secure the southern borders is moving forward. The first stage of the fence is over and the second stage of including modern technology in monitoring and tracking infiltrators is being implemented, Al Ghamdi told Saudi daily Al Sharq Al Awsat.
The official added that the northern borders were secure and that the rate of infiltration into Saudi Arabia was nil, stressing that the modern technology used by the border patrols succeeded in tracking anyone trying to enter the kingdom illegally.
We deal with infiltrators in the 20-kilometre no-man zone, he said.
The tracking of infiltrators trying to enter the kingdom by using aeroplanes is coordinated with the interior ministry security aviation, he said.
On September 5, King Abdullah Bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud inaugurated the first phase of a border security barrier along the kingdoms northern borders, stretching from Hafar Al Batin, near the Iraq-Kuwait border, to the northeast town of Turaif close to Jordan.
The Saudi Press Agency reported that the multilayered barrier runs along 900km of the northern border and consists of 50 radars, 78 monitoring towers, eight command centres, ten mobile surveillance vehicles, 38 night vision camera-equipped gates, 32 rapid-response centres, and three rapid intervention squads, all linked by a fibre-optic communications network.
The official news agency said that 3,397 people were being trained by 60 trainers to man the barrier.
The ten kilometre-deep barrier consists of a sand berm, two fences, and a patrol road that connects the various watchtowers and supporting facilities.

CBI had named Maran and BSNL officials, including the then Chief General Manager K Bramhanathan and MP Veluswami in the FIR filed in October 2013.
A day after CBI arrested his close aide and two others in illegal telephone exchange case, former Telecom Minister Dayanidhi Maran on Thursday charged the agency with trying "to fix" him to please an RSS leader from Tamil Nadu.
"CBI should be a fact-finding machine and not a fixing one. I am being singled out. CBI is fixing me to please an RSS ideologue from Tamil Nadu," a combative Maran told reporters here after briefing DMK chief M Karunanidhi on the developments. He, however, did not name anyone.
Maran, who is facing CBI heat, alleged that the investigating agency was compelling the three arrested persons to complain against him and that they were even tortured to give "false statement".
CBI had yesteday arrested V Gowthaman, then Additional Private Secretary of Dayanidhi Maran, and two others in connection with alleged allotment of more than 300 high-speed telephone lines to the the former Telecom Minister's residence in Chennai which were extended to his brother's TV channel.
CBI had named Maran and BSNL officials, including the then Chief General Manager K Bramhanathan and MP Veluswami in the FIR filed in October 2013.
"...after eight years, they are just fixing this case. They have arrested three people. Irony is they have been ill-treated and were forced to give false statement. When they refused, they were arrested. They were compelled to complain against me. Third degree treatment was meted out to them,"Maran alleged.
Asserting that he would fight out the case, Maran hit out at CBI, saying "Is CBI trying to impress the RSS ideologue from Tamil Nadu? The telephone line still functions in my residence....CBI wants to pass the buck, I have no choice but to fight it out."
"CBI has filed FIR against me alleging when I was the telecom minister and there was excess use of telephone connection. I have explained. This investigation has been going on for eight years", he said.
He said for the last 18 months the arrested people have been called by CBI and they cooperated in all the investigation procedures.

New Delhi, Jan 22: CBI on Jan 21 arrested three people, including V Gowthaman, the then Additional Private Secretary of Dayanidhi Maran, in connection with alleged allotment of more than 300 high-speed telephone lines to the then Telecom Minister's residence in Chennai which were extended to his brother's TV channel.
Besides Gowthaman, CBI arrested Chief Technical Officer S Kannan and electrician L S Ravi of Sun TV network, the agency said. The three have been arrested to "collect some crucial evidence" which may come up during their questioning, CBI said.
The investigating agency also informed that all arrested people would be produced before a designated court in Chennai on Thursday, Jan 22.
CBI has named Maran and BSNL officials, including the then Chief General Manager K Bramhanathan and MP Veluswami in the FIR filed in October 2013 following a preliminary enquiry in which the agency claimed to have found enough material to proceed with a regular case against the former minister.
CBI alleged nearly 323 residential lines were allegedly in the name of the BSNL General Manager connecting the Boat House residence of Maran with the office of Sun TV through a dedicated underground cable during his tenure as Telecom Minister.
The probe had started in 2011, nearly four years after getting complaints that a 'virtual' telephone exchange was allegedly set-up at the then Telecom Minister's house for facilitating data transfer from Sun TV.
The agency had recommended action to the then Telecom Secretary in 2007 but the department allegedly did not give its nod in the case, sources in CBI said. CBI filed a preliminary inquiry in the case in 2011, they said.
The sources said these lines were not ordinary telephone lines but costly ISDN, capable of carrying huge data thus facilitating faster transmission of TV news and programmes across the globe.
CBI had in its report to the Telecom Secretary alleged these lines were for use of large commercial enterprises to meet special needs such as video conferencing or transmission of huge volume of digital data for which heavy fee is charged but Sun TV got it for free.
