    Takahiro Iwasaki: Reflection Model.

    EXPERIMENTA: RECHARGE

With a contemporary art landscape largely defined by its multiplicity of genres and technologies, you can't help but wonder about the enduring relevance of a technology-based arts biennale such as Experimenta, now in its eighth edition. What to make of an event that showcases video, light, kinetic sculpture, sound and other technology-centric works when they are already part of today's wider art lexicon? That said, good art is good art and while there are a few too many works that fail to transcend their tech-centricity, there are plenty that subtly broach the exhibition's thematic bearings of reinterpreting history through technology's lens. Khaled Sabsabi's vast 3D, 100-channel video installation composed of 70,000 layered photographs is an immersive and spectacular deconstruction of place, politics and propaganda, where Berlin-based group Korinsky's sound and sculptural installation pulses with droning energy and physicality. A sound and strobe light installation by Stuart McFarlane, Darren Verhagen and Toby Brodel, meanwhile, transforms and animates a simple wire sculptural object into a dynamic, ever-changing form.

    TAKAHIRO IWASAKI: REFLECTION MODEL (ITSUKUSHIMA)

While one can't ignore the fastidious detail imbedded in Japanese artist Takahiro Iwasaki's prodigious architectural model of the sacred Itsukushima Shrine off the coast of Hiroshima, his series of sculptures created as a commission for the NGV resonate for their almost surreal optical and spatial effect. Suspended by wires attached to the ceiling, the vast wooden models not only quote the meticulous structural and architectural detail of the UNESCO World Heritage Site and its famed "floating" Torii gate, but physically mimic the reflections created by the water that surrounds the actual site. It's a simple but remarkably powerful device. Iwasaki's levitating sculptures use fastidious realism to recreate a perceptual conceit that is the divine work of both architecture and nature.

Bids being accepted for federal building upgrades in Spartanburg - January 24, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

A federal agency is accepting bids to renovate the judge's chamber inside the Donald S. Russell Federal Building in Spartanburg.

A federal agency is accepting bids to renovate the judge's chamber inside the Donald S. Russell Federal Building. The estimated cost to overhaul the 3,040-square-foot office area is $1 million to $5 million.

The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) is accepting bids through Wednesday.

According to information posted on the Federal Business Opportunities website, renovations include the abatement of hazardous materials and a complete redesign of interior spaces and installation of new finishes.

Included in the redesign are new wall, floor, and ceiling finishes; lighting/power and data; door systems; custom millwork; signs; toilet and break area; and a sprinkler renovation.

GSA Public Affairs Officer Saudia Muwwakkil wrote in an email that GSA expects renovations to U.S. 4th Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Henry F. Floyd's chamber to begin in April and take six months.

The renovation will include lead and asbestos abatement; new mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire suppression system installations; and other work needed for better maintenance and use by the Circuit Court, Muwwakkil wrote.

The Donald S. Russell Federal Building was built in 1931 and originally housed Spartanburg's main post office, federal courthouse and offices.

The Spartanburg Herald Journal reported that the Georgian Revival style building was constructed for $360,000 more than $5.6 million in today's dollars when adjusted for inflation.

The first cases were heard Dec. 9, 1931, with 20 people pleading guilty to violating then national prohibition laws.

Power to the people, says Karen, after cleaning up 1,000 damages - January 24, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Last updated at 12:36, Friday, 23 January 2015

A West Cumbrian woman has advised people to stand up to big firms when service isnt up to scratch after she was awarded more than 1,000 for a damaged carpet.

WIPED THE FLOOR: Karen Williams, of Broughton Cross, with some of the correspondence from her battle

Karen Williams, 52, of Broughton Cross, near Cockermouth, hired a Rug Doctor carpet cleaning machine from Workingtons Morrisons store in September, but after using it her living room carpet shrank and her house was filled with a stench of rotting underlay.

She had to remove her carpet and despite four months of correspondence with both companies, she was getting nowhere.

Mrs Williams, a mother-of-two, turned to Trading Standards for help.

She said: Power to the people I say. Local people should be informed that the giants cannot walk all over you and our local Trading Standards officers are there to help.

When the carpet was damaged, Mrs Williams rang Morrisons.

The supermarket referred her to Rug Doctor, which said the hired machine had been recalled because there was a leak.

An independent assessor visited to look at the damage and Rug Doctor said it would not pay any compensation, as her carpet was too old.

West Greene to receive report on failed retaining wall - January 24, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

ROGERSVILLE West Greene School Board expects to receive a report by the end of the month from the consultant hired to investigate the cause of the collapse of a retaining wall at the new elementary school.

The board plans to discuss the consultants findings at its next building and grounds committee meeting Feb. 5.

The board approved several motions Thursday regarding the elementary project and recessed the meeting until 7:30 p.m. Jan. 29.

The retaining wall, which runs about 760 feet behind the new school and at its highest reaches 31 feet, collapsed Nov. 13. Nothing changed regarding the condition of the wall since then, Superintendent Thelma Szarell said Thursday.

The board in November accepted Michael Baker International LLC as an independent consultant to the district and architect. The company was asked to investigate the cause of the collapse and develop a plan to reconstruct the wall.

To review Bakers work, the board also hired its own peer review consultants, Pennsylvania Soil and Rock Inc.

The elementary school is nearly completed. Basically, everything is done, but there are a lot of very small things that still have to be addressed, Szarell said. The repair of a scratch on a finished surface, she said, is an example.

The district plans to begin using the building at the start of the next school year in August.

The board voted Thursday to pay Pennsylvania Soil and Rock Inc. $14,228.10 for work it completed between Nov. 18 and Jan. 3.

It approved a motion directing URS, the districts construction manager, to issue a construction change directive deleting certain work from the scope of work included in the agreement with Liokareas Construction Co. Inc., the general contractor.

Topper Drive homeowners seek compensation in court - January 24, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Topper Street property owner Dale Scott has launched legal action against the District of Mission and the builders of Heritage Marketplace. He claims his property has slipped and his house has been damaged after a retaining wall was built in 2010. None of the allegations have been proven in court.

A house a Mission man bought as an investment property more than eight years ago is now bankrupting him.

Dale Scott invested in a home on Topper Street with his mom in 2006, but neither of them ever lived in it. Instead, they rented it out and received some income from it annually.

But the rent Scott is receiving now is not enough to pay for engineers to help fix the property and lawyers to conduct a court challenge to those who he alleges were responsible for the damages done to his house and land.

Scott and two of his neighbours allege a retaining wall built just below his property for Heritage Marketplace in 2010 was not properly designed, inspected and constructed.

The defendants in the case are the District of Mission, the builders of the shopping mall on Stave Lake Street and 11 Avenue, and the engineers of the project.

According to the civil claim, the slope has slipped, which has caused the three properties above it to settle.

Scott and his neighbour Finn Nielsen claim the settlement of the slope has caused structural damage to their homes.

"Inside, the walls have cracked and the foundation has cracked in the back (of the house)," said Scott.
