CALGARY- Some residents of one of the hardest-hit communities during Albertas 2013 flood say Premier Jim Prentices pledge to help more with recovery efforts has come too late.
Prentice visited the town of High River over the weekend and announced the province will expedite the distribution of $20 million in immediate assistance for those still working to repair the homes following the disaster.
One former resident of the hard-hit community of Hampton Hills said despite remediation work on his home he has since been forced to move.
The mold came back with a vengeance, said Briand Crundwell, who now lives in a different neighbourhood. Wed done everything right. The house was cleaned by Tervita, we did what AHSrecommended re-insulated, dehumidified at considerable expense and we lost the battle.
Crundwell moved into the doomed custom-built home just 28 hours before the flood hit. He says the cost of rebuilding didnt make financial sense and is now responsible for selling his own vacant lot, a challenge he says a growing number of homeowners in Hampton Hills are facing.
I see a tragedy, said Don Sandford of Lansdowne Equity Ventures. I see something thats taken far too long to get resolved. I see people here that have been hurt financially emotionally. I see all kinds of financial issues driving development in reverse.
While some remain hopeful the community will eventually bounce back, some residents are no closer to moving home than they were 18 months ago.
I consistently find the remediation only partially done and then the all-clear was given to people that yes they can carry on with their life, said Nick Michalezki, an air technician with Rocky Mountain Inspection. Now theyre finding out that their life is back to where it was at the day of the flood.

Seemingly standard cupboards with smart, unique or high-tech elements and accessories behind their doors can make a world of difference when it comes to making a bath zone more organized and user friendly. Cases in point: The 10 bathroom cabinet ideas youll find here. While they may look fairly basic upon first glance, take a closer look and youll find that the beauty (and benefits) of these bathroom storage units go well beyond the surface.
14 bathroom ideas expected to be big in 2015
1. Bright lighting ideas. Do you often struggle to find items in your bathroom cabinet because its so dark inside? Built-in cabinet lighting will solve that problem. Opt for recessed downlights (use glass shelves in your cabinet or open shelving unit, rather than ones made from solid materials like wood or stainless steel, as this will allow the light to filter through to the bottom of the cabinet), or try a backlit panel that will illuminate the entire storage space, like the one shown here.
For added functionality, rather than a switch-operated light, select a sensor light that automatically turns on and off when the cabinet door is opened or closed.
2. A cubby for your gadgets. Want your hair dryer, straightener, electric toothbrush or shaver to be easily accessible but dont want them cluttering the top of your vanity? A compact nook with a lift-up door (like the one pictured) or pocket doors where you can stash your grooming gadgets may be just what you need. Position the compact cabinet on top of your vanity so that it sits at a comfortable and convenient height, and in front of an electrical outlet so the devices can remain plugged in, charged and ready to go at all times.
Alternatively, if countertop space is at a premium, you might consider incorporating a drawer with a built-in electrical outlet into your vanity or bathroom cupboard instead.
3. A slide-out step. Do you have youngsters who struggle to reach the basin or everyday items that sit on top of the vanity, in high shelves or in tall cupboards in your family bathroom? A pullout or fold-down step is a nifty addition for any family bathroom. (Notice how the step in this transitional space is disguised as a run-of-the-mill drawer.) Position it at the base of your vanity or other cabinetry in your bathroom that your little ones may need to access.
It may also prove useful when cleaning, as it will allow you to dust and wipe down hard-to-reach spots, like the top of your mirror or medicine cabinet.
4. Drawer organizers. Bring order to messy drawers with inserts that divide the storage space into separate, easy-to-manage (and easy-to-navigate) sections for different bath-time and grooming essentials, like razors, brushes, combs and skincare products. This clever, clutter-free setup shows how its done. A deep, roomy drawer conceals two smaller drawers, each of which boasts removable organizers that can be taken out when in use and reconfigured when the need arises.

10 Design Moves From Tricked-Out Bathrooms
Invercargills hundred year old First Presbyterian Church has been given an 80%+ earthquake rating - and is celebrating by offering free public tours of the building on Saturday 14 February.
First Church has been an iconic Invercargill building for 100 years, and based on a report from consulting engineers is likely to remain so for another 100 years. Hadley & Robinson Limited, Dunedin based consulting engineers, have assessed the building and their analysis concludes that "it can be reported with high confidence that the building rates at better than 80% NBS" and therefore it is not earthquake prone.
Hadley and Robinson reviewed the drawings of the original construction, completed a visual survey of the building and discussed the construction with workmen who had been involved in recent repairs to brickwork. They concluded that the massive brick walls were capable of resisting significant earthquake motions.
"It is wonderful news that First Church rates better than 80% NBS" said William Watt, Chair of the First Church Heritage Buildings Charitable Trust. "In February 2015 we will be celebrating the buildings 100th birthday and we can do so knowing that the building is safe to use for church activities and to hire out for other events."
"In 2009 a Conservation Plan was developed by well-known Invercargill architect, Allan Mollison who developed a plan for the restoration of the building. The stained -glass windows have been restored along with significant restoration of the exterior brickwork and roof. After the Christchurch earthquakes we felt it was important to know the strength of the building and whether any strengthening was required before we continued with the restoration of the building" Mr Watt said.
First Church is a major Invercargill landmark which was opened in 1915 and is of an Italian Romanesque design. Over one million bricks were used in the construction of the church which has a height of 15 metres. The Campanile bell tower has a height of 32 metres, with the walls at its base being one metre thick. Arthur Sefton, bricklayer, was regarded as one of the finest tradesmen in the country when the building was constructed with its complex arches and patterns.
"We owe a debt of gratitude to the original builders and to the generations of people who have maintained and cared for the building over the last 100 years. Tours of the building will be held on Saturday 14 February from 10am for people wanting to view the building and its construction. Tours will commence from the Tay Street entrance of the Church" William Watt said "This truly is a wonderful building and we would be delighted to show it to the community."
