GREENFIELD, Ind. -
If a picture is worth a thousand words, a home security video has turned out to be priceless for a Hancock County family.
Cameras at Dustin Davis' home captured two burglars ransacking his family's home.
"It disrupts your life. Your sense of security is gone," Davis said.
The two men are first recorded outside the Davises' home by exterior cameras. After climbing through a living room window, thieves spend more than 30 minutes grabbing everything they can carry. Strategically-placed interior cameras even recorded the thieves going up and down the stairs, carrying the family's belongings.
The video shows the burglars stacking their stash at the back door.
"With technology the way it is and social media and everything else, nine times out of ten you are going to get caught," Davis said.
"A picture is worth a thousand words," said Hancock County Sheriff's Captain Jeff Rasche.
So is home security video for investigators, who say just like the Davis break-in, the same kind of crime could be happening at a home near you.
"The same people that are doing these crimes in Hancock County are also doing them in Shelby County, Johnson County, Marion County and Hamilton County," Rasche said.

After a successful crowdfunding campaign that raised $250,000 and a first-generation product that promised remote viewing of anyone coming to your front door over your home network, Doorbot is rebranding as Ring, and introduced redesigned hardware with more of a focus on home security, and a design that should help it better fit in with its surroundings and compliment existing house design choices.
Ring founder and CEO Jamie Siminoff admits that while Doorbot was mostly a success, it was also very much a first-generation product, complete with its own flaws and shortcomings, the feedback from which went into informing the design of Ring. Ring as a brand is designed to encompass more than just a telepresence solution for your front door; the intent was to create a company image that could apply to total home security, with a view to the future and connected home treatment of home protection.
With the Ring doorbell, early on when we were designing it, we decided what we were really doing was designing the alarm system literally turned inside out, Siminoff said. Not an alarm system that copied what ABT is doing, what Canary is doing, or even what Dropcam was doing with its window and door systems, but actually building some kind of pre-crime system.
Ring can alert users to motion as soon as its detected, in addition to recording video, alerting users to any potential crime before it even happens. Often this means they can remotely answer the door even if theyre on the other side of the world, which can be enough to prevent something before its even happened. Two-way communication on the device works like a phone call, instead of the push-to-talk features of the Doorbot, which makes it easier to communicate with whoevers at the door, and wide-angle video is also recorded to the cloud in HD resolution.
Whereas Doorbot was designed primarily as a doorbell, Ring is conceived of as a security measure first, and Siminoff admits that in addition to its functional evolution, the hardware has also gotten much better in terms of design.
The Doorbot, I think it turned out in the end to be a good product, but I certainly wouldnt say it was the best product, Siminoff said in an interview. We now sort of looked at the world with, we have to compare our products to Apple, regardless of whether we compete with them or not, and I dont think we succeeded at that level.
Siminoff says that regardless of whether a gadget theyre creating is something that Apple is also currently selling, it behooves any hardware maker out there to compare themselves to Cupertino, because thats what years of iPhone sales have done to consumer expectations. Even Apple, to some extent, is battling with its own good reputation, Siminoff points out, and general consumers now expect that level of quality and design from all their various electronic devices.
But the main selling point, Siminoff says, will still be its role in adding another layer to a sense of security. Thats because it fits into a role where a large portion of daytime crime is happening anyway.
We started to see with [Doorbot] very quickly, that the appearance of being home or being home was one of the best preventative measures for daytime crime, Siminoff said. Over 1 million burglaries [per year] just in the U.S. alone occur during the day when no ones home. Its one of the most likely crimes for you to be affected by from a statistical side, and 80 percent of those crimes start with the front door.

Pat Popa takes great pride in both the products and service provided by the family-owned and operated business shes personally been a part of since 1986.
Serving the community since 1968, Popa Heating and Cooling has grown from a hometown sheet metal shop that focused on new construction to a full-service provider of new/replacement residential and light commercial HVAC systems. They also offer system maintenance and repair with qualified technicians who Popa provides with extensive training classes and FBI background checks for customer peace of mind.
Its no secret that HVAC equipment is always getting more technical, Popa said. Thats why its so important to keep training and investing in our team. Its a great feeling to hear how much a customer appreciates our quick, courteous service when Im out and about in the community. Its not like I can go into Strack & Van Til with my head hanging, hiding from anyone I might see in the produce department. Our customers are our neighbors and friends. Its been that way for almost 45 years now, and we want to keep it that way.
Along with residential HVAC for standard 1,200-1,400-sq-ft homes to custom built homes as large as 10,000-sq-ft, Popa Heating and Cooling offers light commercial HVAC for retail, medical and office buildings. In addition, they can provide whole-house air cleaners, automatic humidifiers, electronic thermostats, carbon monoxide detectors and UV air purifiers.
Its important to keep up with the latest technologies in our business, Popa added. For example, I recently attended a training session with Honeywell on their new wi-fi thermostat. Weve already installed quite a few. I was surprised to see how many HVAC dealers had not yet been installing this newer technology. Weve been recommending and installing it for years, and our customers love it!
Considering the fact that pretty much everyone needs heating and air conditioning, Popa took on the task of rebranding her company to make it more customer-focused about five years ago.
My customers tell me what they want, and I listen plus everyone loves the polar bear and they remember us, she said. Whether they are building a new home, need a replacement or update, everyone wants maximum energy savings and long-term comfort. Our goal is to find the best possible system, and we go well beyond the minimum standards set by manufacturers, building codes and federal laws. Weve had over 750 installs in the last five years, and Im grateful we didnt have to rely on a hot summer to grow our business this year.
It all starts with listening to customers and providing what they want.
When I was in the waiting room at the hospital recently, a woman approached me to say hello, Popa added. She recently had a new TRANE HVAC system installed, and I was so pleased to hear that she loved everything about her experience with us, especially the fact that shes already saving money on her utility bills.

As many homeowners know, fall is no time to rest on ones laurels. During this time of year it is important to take advantage of the cooling weather to patch the lawn, plant grass seed, and engage in a little weed prevention. Senske Services says this is the time to prepare for both winter and spring.
Senske Services advises homeowners to make preparations for growing a new lawn during the fall. But to grow a new lawn, the soil needs to be moist in order for grass seeds to germinate. There are three ways to plant new grass: seeding, laying down sod, and hydro-seeding. Regardless of the method chosen homeowners need to make a smooth seed bed and drain the water away from the home.
Believe it or not fall is also a great time to control broadleaf weeds, such as dandelions. In fact, if they are controlled in the fall, they will not bloom and take over the yard in the spring. Timing is critical when preparing your lawn for both the winter and spring. Early fall is one of the best times of the year to make lasting changes in the care of lawns and shrubs, says Mosley.
This is also a good time for people with irrigation systems to begin scheduling their sprinkler blowouts in preparation for colder weather. These systems are among the more expensive aspects of a lawn, so it is important to have a blowout done properly. Some homeowners take care of it themselves, but a professional lawn care service is more likely to do the job right the first time and save the customer time. In addition, most professional companies dispose of excess materials in a safe manner and guarantee their work.
Overall, fall is a great time of year to take care of the yard work that may have been neglected during the summer. Senske Services is offering a fall lawn special for a full lawn care service program, starting at $39.95 per treatment, for customers in its service area. It is also scheduling sprinkler blowouts for $59.95 up to 8 stations. Find out more by calling Senske Services at (877) 944-4007.

QUESTION: I was walking through my yard, and my grass has been looking really good, but I started kicking up thousands of these little grayish-white moths or butterflies, and now I'm worried. What are they?
ANSWER: Oh my goodness, they're back. Those bad, bad tropical sod webworms, or perhaps it's one of their hungrier, more temperate cousins.
These things run in cycles that are hard to predict, but up until a few years ago, no one ever talked about sod webworms on this part of the Gulf Coast.
Now, for the past several years, they've been turning up every fall.
It's not those grayish moths with their distinctive long snouts that do the actual damage. It's their rambunctious young'uns, the caterpillars, which will eat grass blades to the ground. They don't eat roots, so the grass will usually recover, but not before it's weakened and the bare spots begin to attract weeds.
If you wait until the grass is visibly damaged, you've waited too late. The damage has been done and you'll just have to wait for it to recover.
But if you resolve to treat when you see the moths flitting about, laying eggs, you can treat these guys easily and safely. Simply get a small bottle of Dipel or Thuricide, which contains a disease that is harmful only to caterpillars.
Do it immediately, because once the caterpillars are large enough to see easily, it will be too late to kill them. They'll be too tough to die, and they'll have already had the fill of your plants.
Instead look for the moths, and start treating every 7 to 10 days as long as you see the moths.
QUESTION: I've been developing a community vegetable garden, and someone thinks we should use garden cloth to control weeds. He said we could just compost on top of that. What do you think?
