Demolition of 4 tower blocks is triumph for locals - September 29, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

FOUR notorious tower blocks in Glasgow are to be pulled down and up to 60 new homes built in their place.

Glasgow Housing Association initially had permission to demolish two of the multi-storey blocks at Tarfside Oval in Cardonald, but has now announced all four are to go.

A spokesman said they had listened to the community and it was clear they wanted all four pulled down.

He said the flats, which have seen a series of police drug raids and a murder in recent years, had become unpopular and expensive to maintain.

They are currently empty with all the tenants rehoused elsewhere.

Glasgow City councillor for Craigton Alistair Watson said it was a triumph for the residents and "one of the occasions when consultation has really worked".

He said: "The local community was totally, 100% behind the complete clearance of the site.

"There were deep-seated issues with crime. The level of crime was worrying people, it was spreading like a cancer. This is a unique opportunity to reinvent the area."

Mr Watson, a local councillor for 20 years, said the flats, which at one time housed around 500 people, had started to decline in the late 1980s.

Pointe Claire demolition fight not over yet - September 29, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Developer gets green light to demolish 28 Fifth Ave. home

The fight over the demolition of a 63-year-old bungalow in Pointe Claire south isnt over.

Though the city's demolition committee, comprised of city councillors Aldo Iermieri, Paul Bisonnette, and Jack Beaumont, voted to approve the modified demolition request put forth by developer Les Construction Rogival Inc. to demolish the Fifth Avenue single-family home, resident Peter Bunce told the Chronicle an appeal of the ruling is in order.

This is definitely not finished, said the 29 Bayview St. resident. There are a lot of unhappy residents who want to see this to the end.

Approximately a dozen of Fifth Avenue and Bayview Street residents were previously successful in late July preventing the developer from acquiring a permit to demolish the currently vacated home and subsequently build two homes on the subdivided lot.

Residents argued the home wasnt in a deteriorating state as stated by Luc Vallee, the owner of Les Construction Rogival, adding the addition of two modern homes would ruin the small town charm.

Theres no need to demolish this house, Jerry Turner, of 38 Fifth Avenue, said at the time. Having two homes on this property is not in character of the street.

The demolition committee agreed, denying the permit. Although, the citys planning advisory committee approved of the demolition plan.

Demolition at city auditorium unveils history - September 29, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Published: Monday, September 29, 2014 at 5:59 p.m. Last Modified: Monday, September 29, 2014 at 5:59 p.m.

An acoustic ceiling that was installed in the old city auditorium at Tuscawilla Park in the 1980s is being torn down to expose the original bow trusses.

We want people to see there is movement going on, said Pamela Calero, the Ocala Symphony Orchestra's executive director. Everything has been approved with the city.

The full renovation to convert the historic building into the Reilly Arts Center and home for the orchestra will not begin until $2.3 million of the $2.6 million fundraising goal is met. So far, the symphony has raised a little over $2 million, all from private donations.

Before the construction can begin in earnest, the symphony board must demonstrate to the city of Ocala, which has agreed to give the symphony a 30-year lease on the building, its financial ability to complete the building renovations. The lease for the city-owned building, which was approved in January, is $1 a year.

We can start construction at $2.3 million. That's kind of our golden number to really make things happen, Calero said.

She said the organization is planning to hold private tours of the facility in hopes of generating interest and support.

We are exposing the really historic architecture of the building, which are the bow trusses, which are beautiful, Calero said.

Catherine Zimmer, assistant city manager of public services, said the orchestra board does have to come up with the renovation money and that the city is working with them.

They are hoping to bring people in there as a fundraiser and show them it's started, Zimmer said. They feel that may elevate some of the fundraising they are doing.

Cook Builders: Making the American Dream a reality for 40 years - September 29, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

A true leader in the local building industry, Richard Cook has been committed to custom building since he started remodeling homes in 1974. A longtime member and past president of the Northwest Indiana Home Builders Association (HBA), he was one of the first to become a Certified Green Professional through the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) program, which was introduced in 2008.

Our ultimate goal has always been to provide a home that is equally as beautiful as it is comfortable, he says. Many people dont realize that you can incorporate green, energy-conscious building practices that improve comfort while reducing gas and electric consumption without significantly driving up the cost of construction by making the right choices.

As the companys list of clients grew, it wasnt long before a handful of them asked Cook Builders to design and build their next home. As a result, the company earned a stellar reputation for building high-end custom homes throughout Northwest Indiana.

Then, as they focused more and more on new construction, Rich Cook and his hand-selected team of homebuilding experts were honored to be the builder of choice for their clients friends and families. The best part, according to Cook, is the fact that every home is custom, including the companys more affordable homes.

People like new homes - its still the American dream, he says. We work hard with and for our homeowners, and it seems to work out well for everyone. The fact that we are able to build such a wide range of homes for people with such varying incomes is an indicator of that fact.

Just as Cook Builders remains steadfast in its commitment to build homes that are beautiful, solid and efficient, Rich Cook is dedicated to maintaining an open line of communication with each client.

As a true custom home builder, we go the extra mile to meet all the unique needs of every individual client, Cook explained. Building a home can be a pretty daunting process, especially if youre doing it for the first time. Were finding our new online portal that shows whats going on at every point to be a very big help. It guides our homeowners along, every step of the way, and once they see that screen full of big green checks, its a huge relief.

Currently building luxury homes in Munster (Community Estates), Crown Point (Ellendale Farm and Feather Rock) and St. John (Three Springs and Lake Hills), Cook Builders is also in the process of completing an entire street in Dyers Emerald Crossing.

I would have to say we are busier than we ever have been right now, Cook says. We have a model open from 12-4pm on Saturday and Sunday in Emerald Crossing where we can build a completely custom home starting in the $250s (maintenance-free cottage homes start in the $220s).

New construction specialists Dawn and Aaron Collins welcome 2015 Parade of Homes to Brigata Hills - September 29, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The Home Builders Association of Northwest Indiana recently revealed they will be going back to a traditional single-site Parade of Homes next summer and introduced Valparaisos Brigata Hills as the host site. This popular annual consumer event gives people interested in building or buying a new home the opportunity to interact with the areas top experts in the field.

The Parade of Homes typically showcases high-end designer homes, so Brigata Hills is an ideal setting for the HBA to once again feature the latest design and decorating trends, as well as new and sustainable building techniques and leading edge home technologies, Dawn Collins, who along with Aaron Collins is broker/owner of Valparaisos Century 21 Executive Realty, says. We are definitely looking forward to being a part of this prestigious event.

Offering exceptionally gracious living, Brigata Hills is ideally situated on the west/northwest side of Valparaiso at the intersection of 500 N and Froberg Road, just five minutes from the citys lively downtown. Reminiscent of the rolling Tuscan hills, this exclusive enclave of generous home sites and exquisite custom-built luxury homes radiates timeless appeal.

Brigata Hills offers a lifetime of privacy and distinction with an open rural feel, mature trees and impeccable landscape, Collins added. We are proud to be the marketers of choice for this development and have forged key partnerships with a number of the areas top builders, including Sommers Construction and Charlson Custom Homes, both preferred builders in Brigata Hills, among others including Sterling Homes in Sand Creek, Sunshine Homes in Sagamore and Cornerstone Construction in Edgewood.

In order to serve such a broad client base, the team at Century 21 Executive Realty is first and foremost devoted to serving the needs of buyers and sellers throughout Northwest Indiana. That starts with real-time, experience-based market knowledge and a 24/7 dedication to meeting all of their unique needs.

Like Brigata Hills, the Century 21 Executive brand identity is on the luxury side of the business with people expecting a high-end approach to customer service, and we are dedicated to delivering that every minute of the day, Collins added. We are extremely focused on immediate responsiveness both over the phone and internet. Our state-of-the-art Valparaiso office is driven by technology with a personalized team approach to customer service.

Along with a seasoned staff of brokers and agents, Century 21 Executive Realty also offers in-house Title through Fidelity and in-house lending.

We take pride in going the extra mile, making Century 21 Executive a one stop Real Estate shop, Collins says. Our promise to you is smarter, bolder, faster. My team lives and works in this community. Not only are we real estate experts, we are committed to making a difference through our widespread participation and the many leadership roles we have held in a variety of charitable giving and civic organizations.

Shiny Climbable Art By Lee Bul - September 29, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    28 September 2014 | Art & Photography, Free & Cheap, Museums & Galleries | By: Tabish Khan

Installation View Lee Bul at KCC, London Photo Junyong Cho, Courtesy the artist, KCC and Ikon

The Korean Cultural Centre (KCC), located just off Trafalgar Square, has a gallery space that it uses to exhibit some impressive Korean artists. (Earlier in the year you missed Meekyoung Shins vases, where only the smell gave away the fact that they were made from soap.)

The latest show is by Lee Bul, who has taken over the space with a momentous installation piece. At first it feels like walking on the set of a low budget 80s science fiction set, with the walls and floors covered in silver vinyl and silver tape creating a pseudo spider web across the artwork.

Rather than being a delicate sculpture, visitors are encouraged to duck under the tape and ascend the linked but uneven platforms. We approached this with trepidation as the creaking floor and stretching tape suggest they will give way at any moment but the whole structure is surprisingly robust.

Our ascent put us touching distance from the ceiling and allowed us to view this reflective world from a different perspective. Its like an abstract hall of mirrors with the light reflecting off all surfaces creating a warming glow to this immersive and ultimately fun installation.

KCC artist of the year Lee Bul is on at Korean Cultural Centre, 1-3 Strand (entrance on Northumberland Avenue), WC2N 5BW until 1 November. Admission is free. This exhibition is in partnership with Lee Buls solo show in Birminghams Ikon Gallery.
