Menomonie school board mulls over hockey locker room By Pamela Powers Menomonie News Bureau Leader-Telegram

MENOMONIE Menomonie school board members tended to support a dedicated high school hockey locker room at a planned addition to the Menomonie Youth Hockey Association ice hockey arena but worried about funding it.

The cost of the locker room would be about $75,000, which could be paid over 10 years or in a lump sum.

Keith Rogal proposes 5-story Copia hotel project - February 25, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Developers have submitted plans for a five-story, 200-room hotel with two floors of underground parking to replace a parking lot between the Oxbow Public Market and the existing Copia building.

Developer Keith Rogal is working with the Copia Liquidation Trust and bondholder ACA Financial Guaranty Corp. to redevelop the former Copia site at 500 First St., which previously operated as a cultural center for wine, food and the arts.

Copia declared bankruptcy in 2008 amid falling attendance and debt totaling $78 million and has mostly been shuttered since then. The goal is to bring life to the site, said Rogal, and to focus on the unique attributes of the Oxbow area and bring them to a wider audience, including visitors and guests.

In addition to the hotel, a 7,200-square-foot subterranean-type addition would be built using the space currently occupied by Copias amphitheater. Three small buildings would be constructed along First Street offering room for retail, food service, restrooms and a cafe.

The details were presented in a design review and use permit application submitted on Feb. 11 to the city Planning Department. Rogal has also asked the city for a planned development zoning amendment of the area.

Rick Tooker, city community development director, said his team is reviewing Rogals application. At 60 feet, the height of the proposed hotel would meet the maximum height allowances that can be approved for that area, he said.

Even though Rogal has asked for the maximum height, maximums arent automatically granted, Tooker said. There are many issues that need to be considered, such as context, impact on adjacent buildings, views and aesthetics.

These will all be reviewed by the Planning Commission and City Council at future meetings, he said.

The Copia site south of First, including the parking lot, is not part of this application.

Rogals application is a revised reuse plan for the former Copia site. Incorporating earlier public criticism about a need for meeting space, Rogals plan now includes assembly areas in both the main Copia building and the hotel.

Candice Tells All: Living room makeover combines bling with a big screen - February 25, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Almost two years ago, Mary Grace and Manesh moved from a condo into a house. As you might expect, they didnt have enough furniture to go around. Their living room was bare, and has stayed that way all this time, because the two of them had very different visions of how theyd like to finish it off.

Maneshs wishes werent all that complicated. In a nutshell, all he really wanted was a big TV and a comfortable place to relax. Mary Grace wanted a room built for entertaining her style is definitely sophisticated comfort with a bit of built-in bling. The challenge was to take this blank canvas of a room and turn it into the social center of the home, combining Maneshs recipe for comfort with Mary Graces sense of style.

We were able to keep some elements of the existing living room, including the floor and window shutters. Working from the top down, we scraped off the old popcorn ceiling and installed new recessed lighting to brighten things up.

When it comes to providing comfort and a lot of seating, you cant beat a sectional sofa. We selected an L-shaped model and positioned it to face a new built-in media center, containing you guessed it Maneshs TV. Working down the rooms longest wall, we installed a gorgeous ethanol fireplace beside the TV, and finished up with more custom cabinetry housing a bar. The cabinets feature open shelving to show off pretty pieces, and antique mirrored glass doors to hide the things that arent nice enough to display. To add the perfect finishing touch, we installed hardware with just a touch of bling providing a bit of shine just for Mary Grace.

Beside the bar is a cozy lounge area, complete with two stylish armless chairs flanking a glass cocktail table. And, in addition to those chairs and the sofa, there are lots of other flexible seating options in this space. Two ottomans are positioned in front of the fireplace, ready to be drawn up into the conversational circle. A front hall bench also provides even more seating when Mary Grace and Manesh are entertaining a large group. It will take just a minute to reposition these pieces to accommodate guests, and they can be tucked back in place when theyre not needed.

Mary Grace and Manesh love to travel, and theyve accumulated quite a collection of photos. To inject this space with their personality, I decided to create a special gallery wall using custom molding to frame sections of elegant grasscloth wallpaper. The wall covering is shimmery, but also natural and classic, and it provides the perfect backdrop to their treasured travel photos. This is the wall you see as soon as you come into the house, so it was important to add that personal touch.

Finally, we painted the wooden spindles on the staircase the same color that we used on the cabinetry, helping to pull it all together. Theres no doubt this is a finicky job, but one that is well worth the effort.

Its always a delicate balance when one half of a couple wants glitz and glamour, and the other half just wants, well, a big screen TV and a remote with good batteries! In this case, though, Mary Grace and Manesh agreed on one thing: they wanted a living room that felt familiar and welcoming a space perfect for entertaining larger groups and equally functional for those quiet movie nights.

We struck a good balance with this project by incorporating elegant touches such as the fireplace, the mirrored glass, and the shimmery wallpaper with comfort pieces, such as the sofa and the familiar travel photos. Its a wonderful place to come home to, but its also a welcoming place to visit. I have a feeling Mary Grace and Maneshs new living room will become the gathering place of choice for their circle of friends.
