Reworking our dairy systems - February 2, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    MYTCHALL BRANSGROVE/Fairfax NZ

CAPITAL HUNGRY: For a shed that is suitable just for wintering dry cows, the overall additional capital requirement will be about $2000 per cow.

OPINION: Many farmers will resist it fiercely, housing our dairy herd in sheds is almost inevitable.

The New Zealand dairy industry has always prided itself as being different. Whereas most other countries developed their dairy industries based on the housing of cows for much or all of the year, the New Zealand industry has always been pasture-based. The cows harvest the grass themselves, the cost of production has been low, and the image was of "clean and green".

Alas, we now know the image of "clean and green" was never quite true. Although a huge amount has been done to clean up the industry, with fencing of waterways, nutrient budgets and meticulous management of effluent from the milking shed, there is a fundamental problem still to be tackled. This fundamental problem is the concentration of nitrogen in the urine patches which grazing cows leave behind.

The dominant belief among scientists is that when a cow urinates it deposits nitrogen in the urine patch at up to 1000 kg per hectare. Not all of my animal scientist colleagues are convinced about this specific number, but regardless of the exact amount, it is inevitable that there will be significant nitrogen leaching from urine patches deposited in autumn and winter.

It does not matter what is done in terms of reduced stocking rate or reduced fertiliser or different grasses. As long as the cows are grazing the paddocks in autumn and winter, then there is going to be significant loss of nitrogen into waterways and underground aquifers.

    There are four possible strategies.

The first option is to do nothing. That would mean the leaching problem would get even worse. But that is not an option because New Zealand society will not allow it.

The second option is to allow no further expansion of the dairy industry. That, too, is not an option because even with no further industry growth there will be further build-up of nitrogen in the waterways and aquifers.

Google sheds Motorola in $US2.91b deal - February 2, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Google has agreed to sell Motorola to Chinese technology giant Lenovo for $2.91 billion, after a lacklustre two-year effort to turn around the smartphone maker it bought for $12.5 billion.

The deal ends Google's run as a handset maker after it biggest-ever takeover, which was announced in 2011 and finalised in 2012.

It also provides Lenovo footholds in smartphone and tablet markets, while acting as a peace offering to Samsung and other partners that make devices powered by Google-backed Android software.

'It is win-win,' said analyst Tim Bajarin of Creative Strategies in Silicon Valley.

'Google keeps the patents and the research group, and they keep partners off their back, while Lenovo gets what they need to get into the US smartphone market.'

The deal comes a week after Lenovo said it would buy IBM's low-end server business for $2.3 billion, giving it a platform to compete in that sector with US giants Dell and Hewlett-Packard.

However, Lenovo's Hong Kong-listed shares dived 8.21 per cent to HK$10.06 on Thursday as investors were spooked about Motorola's profitability.

Motorola failed to gain traction in a rapidly evolving smartphone market now dominated by South Korea's Samsung and US-based Apple.

Lenovo chairman and chief executive Yang Yuanqing said the acquisition 'will immediately make Lenovo a strong global competitor in smartphones. We will immediately have the opportunity to become a strong global player in the fast-growing mobile space.'

The Chinese firm was the fifth-largest smartphone maker in the fourth quarter, with a 4.5 per cent market share, barely behind fellow Chinese maker Huawei and South Korea's LG, according to a report by research firm IDC.

Two Dursley men await sentence for shed burglary spree

    7:01am Saturday 1st February 2014 in News

DURSLEY man Daniel Savory, 34, has admitted burgling four garden sheds and two garages and is now in custody awaiting sentence.

At Gloucester Crown Court Savory, of Rosebery Mount, Dursley, pleaded guilty to committing all the break-ins between 25-28 March last year.

From a garage in Fort Lane he stole two mountain bikes and a chain saw. Power tools were taken from two sheds in Fort Lane and bottles of alcohol from a third.

Another shed he raided was in Woodmancote and from there he also took power tools.

His final admission was to burglary of a garage in Woodmancote from which he took power tools, a mountain bike and a Raleigh bike.

His denial of four other charges of burgling three sheds and a garage with intent to steal was accepted by the prosecution.

Judge William Hart remanded him pending a pre-sentence report until January 31 when he will be sentenced together with co-defendant Daryl Ash, 38, also of Rosebery Mount, who has already admitted similar offences.
