A Brave, New World Of Tree Trimming Faces Opposition - February 2, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

ESSEX Ken Bombaci is standing between his prized sugar maple and the electric company.

The utility sent letters to the neighborhood in December that it plans to trim back the trees all along Ingham Hill Road, a scenic dead-end lined sporadically by a low stone wall.

But nobody on the road made notice because the mailings were in nondescript envelopes, Bombaci said.

"The tree warden called me and said they are going to trim on your road," said Bombaci, a retired arborist who used to run Bombaci Tree Experts. "We alerted the neighbors, and everybody on the street decided they don't want their trees trimmed."

The refusal escalated to the town's tree warden, Augie Pampel, who backed the residents. And Connecticut Light & Power has appealed the tree warden's ruling, making it the first such petition under a new state law governing tree trimming by utilities.

It might not look like it, but the refusal and the appeal are lines in an escalating skirmish over trees in Connecticut.

Throughout the state, residents are questioning the logic of new tree trimming policies adopted by the state's two electric utilities in response to criticism over their handling of widespread and sustained power outages of recent years. While a harder pruning on trees is likely to decrease outages, residents say, is the loss really worth it?

Hundreds have packed public meetings. Thousands have signed petitions. Letters have piled into state officials' offices. In response, regulators are taking a harder look at the policies, which the utilities say are vital to keeping the lights on when severe weather is the norm.

Bombaci, in a red flannel shirt and drinking coffee one recent morning in his kitchen, casually listed off storms that failed to cause an issue for the road. Gloria, Bob, Sandy, he said, "We didn't lose power because of trees, we lost power because of equipment failure."

A tree fell on the lines during Irene but it fell from deep in the forest. "The history of the street with trees doesn't justify what they want to do," he said.

Eisenhower claims district tile with win over Alief Taylor - February 2, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

As far as transformations go there is more than meets the eye for Eisenhower.

When Robert Stevenson and Steven Taylor were sophomores the Eagles struggled mightily. The program lacked competitiveness and lollygagged its way to five victories.

Stevenson and Taylor are seniors now, and thanks to second-year coach Mark Patton everything is different. The Eagles are district champions.

Eisenhower defeated visiting Alief Taylor, 53-39, on Friday night to clinch at least a share of the 18-5A title. Taylor is three games back of Eisenhower (24-5, 10-1) with three games left in the regular season.

It is the Eagles' first district championship since the 2008 team won 30 games. Before Patton took over last season Eisenhower it had not had a winning season since then.

After going 5-28 as a sophomore, Stevenson said he wondered if he'd ever experience success in his high school career.

"I was just trying to keep my head up two years ago," said Stevenson, who scored 10 of his team-high 14 points in the fourth quarter on Friday. "I didn't think we'd be here now, but we're here."

The Eagles have arrived thanks to Patton's program overhaul.

He changed the culture by emphasizing hard work and discipline. Patton said the Eagles needed to learn how to compete at the Class 5A level. A large part of that was putting individual gain aside in favor of teamwork.

It worked like a charm in his first season. The Eagles went from five victories in 2011-12 to 25 wins in 2012-13. They placed third in district play and made the playoffs.

Plains Art Museum event helps kids create 'Clay for a Cause' - February 2, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Casey Deng paints tiles

Casey Deng, 4, of Fargo, decides which color to choose next as she paints one of two clay tiles she created Saturday at Kid Quest at the Plains Art Museum in Fargo. One tile is for herself and the other will be given to a patient of Hospice of the Red River Valley. Dave Wallis / The Forum

FARGO The Plains Art Museum held a Kid Quest activity Saturday and more than 200 children took part in the days theme of Clay for a Cause.

The children were asked to make a clay tile for themselves and at least one tile that will be given to a patient of Hospice of the Red River Valley.

Each tile gift will also come with a personal note of encouragement.

Maya Wyganowska was concentrating on making a clay figure for her tile when she was asked if her project might end up brightening someones day.

Yeah, I hope it does, said the 9-year-old, who along with her siblings has been attending Kid Quest sessions for a number of years.

Sometimes, I bring my friends along and they really like it, she said of the activities, which are held from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. the first Saturday of each month, starting in October and continuing through April.

Mayas mother, Joanna Wyganowska, said she appreciates that her four children get the chance to enjoy the museums artwork while dabbling creatively themselves, all at no cost.

What I like about the program is that each month theyre discovering something different, they play with a different medium, Joanna Wyganowska said.

Volunteers hammer away for wounded vets - February 2, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Volunteer Ron Falldorf (left), a retired electrical engineer, introduces (left to right) Kathy McDowell, Alexandra Hafer, and her aunt, Katie Hafer, to their jobs on the Habitat for Humanity project, which provides homes for wounded veterans.

LAKESIDE Some of the bank tellers, loan officers and executives who descended on a Lakeside construction site Saturday had never actually built anything before.

Even so, it didnt take long for these white-collar workers to get into the swing of drilling, hammering and sawing all in the name of community service.

The team from Bank of America is the latest in a series of crews to take a turn at constructing three townhouses for wounded veterans, a project from San Diego Habitat for Humanity.

I have done a lot of volunteer work, but never anything that required power tools. This is a whole new world. I had to stop and take a selfie just so my boyfriend would believe that I did this, said Megan Allen, an educational training specialist who drilled exterior siding above a second-story window while gingerly navigating scaffolding.

Founded in 1988, the San Diego affiliate of the faith-based Atlanta charity has provided homes to 192 families who meet need, income and credit requirements and are willing to work 500 volunteer hours of sweat equity for the groups cause. Volunteers have also renovated homes of more than 60 low-income families and veterans.

Habitat builds homes for roughly $250,000 and sells them to clients for about $150,000 to $160,000, with the goal that zero-percent 25- to 30-year mortgage payments make up no more than 30 percent of the homeowners take-home pay.

Habitats construction and renovation projects benefit families who are losing access to the American dream, said Elizabeth Berg, director of development for the local affiliate. The projects also make for an experience that often doubles as effective team-building exercises, offering volunteer employees a shared experience that transcends the confines of a traditional work environment.

In the workplace there are set strata levels. But on our work site, everyone is on the same level, Berg said. This lets people make a tangible and long lasting difference in the world. You can drive by a home and know that you put that wall or tile in the kitchen. It is very gratifying.

The $1.2 million townhouse project broke ground in March and is about halfway finished. Wall frames were prepped for dry wall, and exterior siding went up Saturday. The project is expected to be completed in June due to the efforts of thousands of volunteers.
