South, West Side shootings wound 3 - February 3, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Chicago Tribune reporter Rosemary Regina Sobol recaps crime happened overnight, including two shootings and an accident of a man falling onto CTA tracks.

    10:34 a.m. CST, February 2, 2014

Three people were wounded in shootings early Sunday and Saturday on the south and west sides.

Most recently, a man took himself to Norwegian-American Hospital about 3 a.m. for treatment of a gunshot wound to the toe which happened when he accidentally shot himself in the 4100 block of West Crystal Street in the West Humboldt Park neighborhood on the West Side, police said.

His injuries were not life threatening.

In an earlier attack about 9 p.m. Saturday in the 5900 block of South Paulina Street in the city's Englewood community on the South Side, someone shot a teen in the leg, said Chicago Police Department News Affairs Officer Hector Alfaro. The 16-year-old boy was in a house when he heard shots and felt pain, police said; the victim and witnesses were uncooperative.

The teen was taken to Holy Cross Hospital in good condition, Alfaro said.

Earlier, at 12:17 p.m. in the 1100 block of West 63rd Street in Englewood, a 23-year-old man was shot in the chest, said News Affairs Sgt. Antoinette Ursitti.

The man was taken in good condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, she said.

No one was in custody for the 63rd Street attack, according to Ursitti.

Health: Tune in to your teenagers hearing - February 3, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

If listening to loud music, playing in the school band, or even mowing the lawn is part of your kids normal routine, parents may want to tune into their childs hearing ability.

While infants and childrens hearing are closely examined during the language development years, Dr. Judy Rasin, a licensed audiologist with McGuires hearing services, said hearing loss may not always be on a pediatricians mind while conducting a teens checkup.

Because hearing loss is an invisible condition, parents can only be vigilant and watch out for its signs and symptoms.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, simple signs in teens include turning up the volume too high while watching television and frequent replies of huh? or what? when others speak to them.

While these signs may be characteristic of almost any teen during their coming-of-age years, parents can also keep an eye on how long and how often their children use their music devices and at what volume.

Pressure from sound waves can damage the hair cells in the ear, which sense vibration and sends signals to the brain. Sound causes part of the hair cell to rock back and forth but if a sound is too loud, the hair cell can be bent or broken. And once its broken, theres no growing a new one, according to the nonprofit Dangerous Decibels, which educates children about hearing loss. Susceptibility to hearing loss is nearly double among 12- to 19-year-olds who are also exposed to second-hand smoke, according to a 2011 New York University study.

That type of damage can be caused by a one-time exposure to loud sounds or by repeated exposure over time to sounds of various intensities, such as those that come through earphones, Dr. Rasin said.

If the earphones dont fit correctly, teens have a tendency to crank up the volume so they can hear it above all the other environmental sounds, she said.

The idea is not to crank them up to dangerous levels, Dr. Rasin said, even if it doesnt sound uncomfortable to them.

    China's 5-star cave hotel - February 3, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Cel Gulapa and Fadzil Hamzah

    Monday, Feb 03, 2014

CHINA - Construction is under way on a hotel resort that burrows into a 30m-deep quarry outside the city of Shanghai. Infographics journalists Cel Gulapa and Fadzil Hamzah dig deep to get the details

It is a hotel where you can rock climb and bungee jump, among other regular offerings.

The InterContinental Shimao Hotel in Shanghai's Songjiang district will have 380 rooms over 19 storeys, and a night's stay is expected to cost about $420.

Part of the hotel will be built into the cave and the extreme sports facility will be cantilevered over the quarry.

The rest of the hotel will be built into the mountainous landscape and guests will be able to enjoy watersports on the lake and use the nearby cliffs for rock climbing and bungee jumping.

There will be a swimming pool and sports centre, banquet hall and conference rooms. Among its restaurants is an underwater one that holds a 10m-deep aquarium.

The hotel, expected to be ready by next year, is designed by British firm Atkins which boast Dubai's Burj Al Arab Hotel as part of its portfolio.

The firm has designed the Chinese hotel to blend with the landscape. It will be fitted with an eco-friendly roof and will use naturally available resources for power.
