Nauset Construction has begun work on Temple Place, a 40-unit, six-story affordable apartment complex in Cambridge.
The $11-million project will be built on the site of the former YWCA swimming pool building and will consist of a mix of one- and two-bedroom units, with several units specially designed for universal access or for residents with visual or hearing impairments.
"The construction is taking place within a constricted environment, which presents a number of challenges for Nauset," Nauset president Anthony Papantonis said in a statement. "It's a tight site, so material deliveries have to be well coordinated to minimize disruption to the neighbors. Our vast experience working in the city of Cambridge and other dense urban settings as well as building sustainable residential projects will serve us well in this potentially difficult environment."
Temple Place was designed by Cambridge-based HMFH Architects Inc. to achieve Enterprise Green Community certification. It will feature a green roof, building materials from recycled content and covered on-site automobile and bicycle parking. Construction is expected to be completed by the end of 2014.

REGINA Health groups at this weeks SUMA convention are calling on municipal leaders to take a stronger stance against smoking.
The Lung Association of Saskatchewan, Heart and Stroke Foundation and Canadian Cancer Society are all calling on Saskatchewan cities to ban smoking in public outdoor places, including childrens playgrounds, sports fields, festivals and concerts and patios at restaurants and bars.
They cite overwhelming public support.
The numbers are extremely high, up into the 90s for support, especially for playgrounds, said Jennifer Miller of the Lung Association. We actually have fallen behind. There are actually many municipalities across the country whove adopted these outdoor public space policies.
However, theres only one city in Saskatchewan Saskatoon banned smoking on patios in 2004, but 10 years later, no one else has followed suit.
Theyve actually come out in a study for protecting the public against second hand smoke as #1 , where Regina ranked #16, said Miller.
Despite those findings, tighter smoking bans are not on the radar in the queen city.
The City of Regina is not looking at that right now. It doesnt mean we wont do that, but its certainly not on the agenda for SUMA at this convention, said Regina mayor, Michael Fougere.

Lebanon The Meriden Road sawmill at Lebanons town line with Plainfield will sit idle at least until spring, awaiting city approval of additions to the main building that would house modernized equipment.
Citing a need for more specific details about the extent of the project, the Zoning Board of Adjustment on Monday night deferred until March 3 a decision on the request from G.H. Evarts and Company of Springfield, N.H., to build additions totaling 6,000 or 7,000 square feet at the north and south ends of the 30,000-square-foot building. Even with the go-ahead from the zoning panel, the project which the company says will not lead to more activity at the site, just make the mill safer and more efficient will need to undergo a review by the Planning Board.
Weve been shut down since the end of the summer, company president George Evarts said after the zoning boards public hearing. We had 16 people working there. Theyre working in other parts of our operation for now.
The citys zoning administrator denied G.H. Evarts and Company a permit on Dec. 20, ruling that the sawmill, which sits in a residential zone between Meriden Road and Great Brook, constitutes a non-conforming use that requires a special exception from the zoning ordinance.
On Monday night, administrator Carmela Hennessy explained that the board is the most appropriate body to rule on the technicality to either overrule her decision, or to uphold the decision and then decide whether to grant a special exception.
Meriden dairy farmer Rob Taylor said that his operation relies upon the sawmill as a source of wood byproducts that his cows use daily.
Approximately 50 head of our young stock is nestled in a pile of Evarts sawdust right now, Taylor said. Its an essential part of our operation.
Lebanon nursery owner Norm Longacre similarly praised the sawmill.
We have been procuring product from this sawmill going on 40 years, Longacre said. It would be a shame for it to close down.
Pointing to the citys own improvements of its public works garage, police station and middle school in recent years, Longacre added, There comes a time when you have to upgrade.

SALT LAKE CITY Twenty children, including five infants, were evacuated from a day care Monday after smoke started to fill the building.
Just before 1 p.m., smoke was reported at 1760 S. 1100 East, which houses five to six businesses, said Salt Lake City fire spokesman Jasen Asay. By the time fire crews arrived, many of the businesses, including the day care, were already in the process of evacuating.
The children were moved to a nearby vacant business to stay warm. No injuries were reported.
The smoke, Asay said, was coming from the basement area where the day care was located. Initially, crews believed it was a small fire in either a wall or a crawl space.
After more than an hour of investigating, crews determined the smoke was being produced by a faulty furnace, Asay said.
