Fire sprinkler saves restaurant - February 4, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

A sprinkler system and efficient firefighters were able to limit damage at a popular Lake Oswego restaurant early Tuesday morning.

La Provence Restaurant, at 16350 Boones Ferry Road, experienced an estimated $25,000 in damage from a blaze that occurred in the middle of the night, and it will most likely be closed for at least a week. But things could have been far worse. One single sprinkler head kept the fire in check until firefighters were able to completely extinguish it.

"Without this sprinkler system, the fire damage would have been way worse than the water damage it did," said Lake Oswego Fire Marshal Gert Zoutendijk.

At 3:15 a.m. Lake Oswego firefighters were alerted to a fire alarm at La Provence. As soon as the first truck, Truck 211 from the Jean Road fire station, arrived on the scene it was noticed that smoke was coming from the roof, so more trucks were immediately requested.

While more fire units were en route, the crew of Truck 211 evaluated the situation and found that the restaurant was charged with smoke. The firefighters came up with a plan to attack the fire. When they went inside, it took them 20 minutes to locate the source of the smoke, which was a fire inside a wall space next to the kitchen.

The Lake Oswego Fire Department was assisted by the Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue.

Shed loads of space - February 4, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Garden sheds don't have the most inspirational image: somewhere to dump unwanted DIY materials, unwashed garden tools and (but for that one sunny day of summer) unused outdoor furniture.

But it's time for an image overhaul, because with a bit of work and imagination, sheds can be a perfect solution to lack of space inside your home.

As long as a garden shed is easily accessible from the house and (preferably) has electricity, a water supply and insulation, there is no reason it can't be used as an extension of your normal rooms.

Because it's separate from the main house, it has the added bonus of being an ideal place to do quiet (or noisy) activities, with many people opting to turn a shed into a workroom/studio, music or games room, home office, gym, or playroom/den - pretty much whatever you need, in fact.

Fitting out your shed with everything required to make it usable and comfortable won't necessarily be cheap, but it will undoubtedly be cheaper than moving home.

You can convert an existing shed, or buy one tailored to your needs, complete with all mod-cons. Specialist companies produce off-the-shelf and bespoke designs, including much more contemporary garden buildings than traditional-looking ones, with everything included for a fully functioning room.

While you may not have the budget for a garden room, which can cost thousands of pounds, a bog-standard shed is much more affordable. Sheds are usually wooden, though they can be metal, which are often easier and quicker to build, tend to be better value for money, and need very little maintenance. Wooden sheds, on the other hand, must first be treated with wood preserver (unless they're pre-treated) and a garden-wood stain or paint, and then maintained with more coats from time to time to prevent the wood from rotting and warping.

Metal sheds are more resistant to fire, rodents and insects than wooden ones, although they can be less able to withstand storms and high winds, are noisy when it's raining, and are hot inside in summer and cold in winter.

Wooden sheds generally look more attractive too, and because they're made of a natural material, they blend into the garden better. It's also easy to jazz them up - garden-wood paints have come a long way since brown was the only choice, and you can make quite a statement with colour. Stripes, for example, are brilliant for a beach-hut effect, while cream and pastel greens and blues are perfect for a pretty, but not too jarring, pop of colour.

All sheds need a firm base, typically paving stones or a concrete slab, but wooden sheds should come with their own floor, whereas metal sheds usually have the concrete or paving base as the floor, so it's essential to get it the right size. It's certainly possible to lay the base and build the shed yourself if you're an experienced DIYer, but novices may struggle. An easier option is to get a gardener or builder to do it for you, although this can be expensive, especially with a large shed.

Report sheds light on ex-CIA deputy director's role in Benghazi attack talking points - February 4, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The recently-released bipartisan Senate Intelligence Committee report on Benghazi sheds new light on the role of Michael Morell, the CIA's former deputy director, in the official talking points explanations put forward after the attack.

"I think, given what was said by him and others, and where they're headed, down the political road, would justify revisiting this issue," Republican Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina told Fox News.

The Senate report states that on Sep. 15, 2012, four days after the attack and one day before U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice appeared on Sunday talk shows blaming the assault on a demonstration over a video, Morell and others at the CIA received a critical email that reported the attacks were "not/not an escalation of protests." Fox News was the first broadcast network to report there were no protests outside the consulate at the time of the attack on Sept. 17, 2012.

The email was from the CIA chief of station who was on the ground in Libya.

"The chief of station is the senior intelligence officer for the entire United States government," said Sam Faddis, who writes extensively about the CIA and intelligence community. "You would really have to have some incredibly overwhelming factual evidence to disregard that and there is no indication of that in the report at all."

Five former intelligence officials contacted by Fox News agreed with Faddis' assessment of the importance of the chief of station's email, but declined to speak on camera, citing personal reasons.

"The way the agency works, he's been running 24 hours a day to nail every fact, and probably they have been sending dozens of messages a day to Washington D.C.," Faddis said of the CIA station chief.

"And now he's reaching out four days into this, emailed directly to the most senior levels of his organization, saying again with the big red crayon as clearly as he can, there were no protests."

While the report does not explain when Morell read the email, it says that on the same day, September 15, he twice edited the talking points about the incident, excising about half the text-- including prior warnings to the State Department.

The word"Islamic" was cut, but "demonstrations" stayed in.

Commission sheds light on female professors - February 4, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Recent studies conducted by the University Commission on Women show that compared to other universities, the number of female faculty members at both the associate and full professor level is lacking.

According to a 2012 Status on Women Report conducted by the UCW, women are underrepresented as tenure or tenure-track faculty at universities across the nation.

At the assistant professor level, the male-to-female ratio is about 1:1, said Beverly McPhail, director of the Womens Resource Center and longtime secretary to the UCW. At the associate professor level, male-to-female is about 2:1, and at the full professor level, the male-to-female ratio is 6:1.

The University Commission on Women is responsible for informing and advising President Khator and other senior administrative leaders, as well as the general university community, on issues and concerns that have an impact on women at the University.

The Commission is currently investigating and benchmarking policies and practices with peer institutions and also aligning our accomplishments and mission with Universities Strategic Initiatives, said Vince Lee, a newly appointed member of the Commission.

In 2007, approximately 62.4 percent of the faculty members at United Statespublic four-year institutions were male and 37.6 percent were female, according to the U.S. Department of Education in 2007. At UH, 71.2 percent were male and 28.8 percent were female since Fall 2010, according to the Office of Institutional Research in 2010.

To me, the gender gap in attaining full professor rank is probably the most striking, said Aimee Chin, associate professor at the Department of Economics and chair member of one of the subgroups of the UCW, the Children on Campus Committee.

I am an economist who spends considerable time teaching and using statistical methods to separate causal relationships from mere correlations, she said, so I very much understand that many factors underlie these observed gender gaps reported there. But the decrease in percentage of females from the entry level to top level is quite dramatic, and one has to ask what can be done to develop and retain talented female faculty.

Differences in the numbers of faculty members, both male and female, are not the only staggering statistic UH women currently face.

The numbers presented in the report also show that men on average out-earn women in almost every category, McPhail said.

Seven reasons you should raise grasscutters - February 4, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Arinze Onebunne | credits: File copy

There are many reasons for keeping and raising grasscutters. Not only are they friendly, they will entertain you with their antics. In addition, the grasscutter will eat up your kitchen vegetable waste; they can be exhibited and exported too.

Grasscutter farming is great if you have a space as small as a room, parking store or kitchen. They give the farmer less trouble; they can get most or all of their food needs from grass. They are one of the most efficient bush-meat producers. In their wild state, grasscutters are one of the many creatures that practise polygamy. In domestication, they are more promiscuous.

    Very cheap to start

Grasscutter raising can be started with a wooden cage and one family of grasscutter breeders normally called a colony, which is sold for N45,000 to N50,000 depending on the age and specie. A colony comprises one male and four females. The cage can be constructed at a cost of N10,000 by any roadside carpenter. The cages can be placed anywhere in the compound or even in the kitchen.

    For meat production

Raising grasscutters for meat production is ideal; they are fast growing rodents, live the longest and are also the toughest of all domesticated rodents. They reach a good weight with little supplement feeding and the most preferred bush-meat. The male grasscutter on average reaches a size of up to two times larger than chicken meat. Additionally, they grow quickly and can be sold as a breeder at a young age of 12 weeks after a diet of primarily milk and pasture. This combination of cheap feed and fast maturation makes grasscutters profitable for those raising the rodents for market purposes. Another reason is that they are efficient converters of a wide range of vegetables and grass matters into meat.

    For breeding stock production

This is one of the most lucrative aspects of the grasscutter farming. The turnover period could be very short, maximum of three to four months after birth. The grasscutter breeding family comprising one male and four females is referred to as a colony. This colony can produce between 50 and 56 more grasscutters in just one year if well managed. Imagine the financial gains!

    For employment creation
