Get McGinty Does she need the light? - February 6, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

MOUNT HOLLY, N.C. -- A 79-year-old woman said she needed to Get McGinty after an air duct cleaning company sold her expensive products, she now claims she didnt want or need. Did the company take advantage her? The womans family thinks so.

Companies that clean the air ducts in your house do so to help you improve the quality of the air you breathe. One such company is Indoor Air Quality, and they did some work at Peggy Broomes house in December.

They cleaned eight of her air ducts for $660, and sold her a $199 washable electrostatic filter. But before they left, they also sold Peggy an $1,100 ultra violet solar light that would sanitize the air inside the ductwork. Peggy doesnt have any pets and her house isnt all that big, so her daughter didnt think it was necessary and felt like her mother might have been taken advantage of.

I was shocked at the amount. I looked at the bill and my jaw dropped, said Malia Alexander, Peggys daughter.

The bill totaled $2,114.84 for a two-hour service call. Peggys family did some investigating and found the same light on EBay for $116, and I found an electrostatic washable filter at home depot for under 35 bucks.

I contacted the managers at Indoor Air Quality this week and raised these very questions. They told me that Peggy was aware of what she was buying and her signature on the work order proves it. But, as an act of good faith toward their customer, the company is now offering Peggy a refund of $800 and she is expecting the check by early next week.

Hokah Forever wall slated for demo in 2015 - February 6, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

On the surface, its just a retaining wall thats going to be replaced after surpassing its life expectancy. But for the city of Hokah and its residents, it isnt just any retaining wall.

An iconic landmark greeting visitors as they enter town on Minnesota Hwy. 44 north, whats commonly known as the Hokah Forever wall, is slated to be replaced come the summer of 2015, and with it, the colorful montage that adorns a good stretch of it.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation hosted an open in Hokah on Jan. 28 to take comments and some criticism about the proposed project, which will replace the current concrete wall with a 1:3 stable vegetated slope that could be filled with plants, flowers and green space.

In doing so, the hill would improve the drainage system for the city that currently discharges storm water into a concrete flume between the two retaining walls (theres a stone wall behind the concrete one), as well as eliminate a wall thats shown signs of its age through cracking, rotation and movement.

Its past its original design life, said Anthony Wagner, a program development engineer with MnDOT. We dont know the exact age of it, but the original wall was constructed in the early 1900s and its exhibiting signs of failure. ... There are some drainage things with it, but the real reasons is that its just exceeded its life.

But in order to achieve the proposal, MnDOT will have to acquire right-of-way, which includes partial takes of property owned by two residents north of the wall and nearly all property owned by Ryan Blexrud including his house and garage, which would be demolished to make way, Wagner said.

Our right-of-way folks have met with all those who are going to be affected, he said. At least theyve been made aware of the intent and the process thats been started.

The project is budgeted at $500,000, but because its a MnDOT project, the state will cover the lions share of the bill, Wagner said. The city may be responsible for a small cost related to the drainage, but not the entire project like was once thought. The selected option, though, is the most cost-effective and most desirable, he said.

Weve looked at a few different options. One was to remove and construct a new wall, Wagner said. (But) there were a lot of impacts to these parcels just to construct that wall. We wouldve taken all of those trees. There wouldve been significant damage to those properties.

The graded slope option was about half the cost of replacing it with another wall, and that includes the right-of-way acquisition, Wagner said.

'Ya Rab' deletes controversial scenes, to release Friday - February 6, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Mumbai, Feb 6 (IANS) The decks were cleared for the release of the Bollywood movie "Ya Rab" Friday after its producers told the Bombay High Court that certain objectionable scenes and dialogues have been deleted.

The Jamiat Ulama-e-Maharashtra (JUeM) had filed a public interest litigation before the court Wednesday challenging the release of the movie on grounds that it portrayed madrassas as schools of terror.

The matter came up before a division bench of Chief Justice Mohit Shah and Justice M. S. Sanklecha Thursday, said petitioner and JUeM spokesman Gulzar Azmi.

At the hearing, counsel for the movie producers informed the court that the objectionable portions have been replaced and hence there is no material at present calling for a stay on the release.

Accordingly, the court declined to grant a stay on the release of the film.

However, the matter has been adjourned till Feb 13 to enable the JUeM approach the court afresh after suitably amending the petition if any objectionable material is found in the movie, said Azmi.

Besides the depiction of madrassas as schools of terror, the JUeM questioned the portrayal of madrassa 'aalims' (teachers) allegedly brainwashing their students to prepare them for Jihadi activities, Azmi had said in the petition.

He said are upset by this "blatant, fictitious and wrongful depiction of 'madrassas' and the teachers" who impart teachings to the Muslim students there.

"In fact, a 'madrassa' not only imparts quality education, but also gives shelter to orphans. They are not centres of any such anti-national activity. There are no incidents anywhere in the state where any terror act or anti-national activities are associated with a madrassa," Azmi argued.

"The exhibition of such gross untruths on the big screen can create general disturbances and also lead to communal disharmony," he maintained.
