Murderer escaped Ionia prison by blending with snow, prying fences with bare hands - February 6, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Convicted murderer Michael David Elliot used his hands to pry open two perimeter fences at the Ionia Correctional Facility and escaped Sunday night, prompting a nationwide alert and an intense manhunt that stretched into late Monday when he was caught in Indiana.

The 40-year-old, who was behind bars for two decades, was captured in a stolen car in rural La Porte County.

Elliot escaped wearing a white kitchen uniform, helping him to blend in with the snow as he avoided detection by a guard who drove past him at least twice, coming within 20 feet at one point.

Elliot made his escape when other inmates headed for a meal. Authorities said he spent about an hour working his way through two fences, breaking through at 7 p.m. It appears he targeted a vulnerable spot, said Russ Marlan, a Michigan Department of Corrections spokesman.

Officials said Elliot was discovered missing around 9:15 p.m. Sunday during a formal count. Marlan said the department is launching a full-scale investigation into the circumstances surrounding the escape.

Elliot made a clean escape. Motion detectors never sensed Elliot, who escaped through fencing close to a unmanned sally port gun tower staffed only when vehicle traffic is going in or out of the facility, Marlan said.

Authorities said they believe Elliot trudged through fields and a wooded area between the corrections facility and the city of Ionia, where he abducted a woman about 8 p.m., using a box cutter to threaten and abduct her in her red Jeep Liberty.

He left Ionia with his captive and drove across the border to Middlebury, Ind., where he stopped for gas, police said. When he went in to pay, the victim called 911 using a cell phone Elliot didnt know she had. It was shortly before midnight.

90-year-old snow shoveler used to strange looks - February 6, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Bob Cather spent his career covering Lincoln in asphalt, including his 2,000-square-foot driveway around the corner from the Piedmont Shopping Center.

Now, in his retirement, the 90-year-old spends days like Wednesday -- when he wakes tohalf a foot of snow blown in from the field across the street -- cleaning and clearing that big driveway off.

But not with a snow blower. He gave his away years ago. Hated it.

But he loves his big-wheeled, big-handled, big-scooped snow shovel.

I bet its the only one in Lincoln. People drive by and gawk.

Wednesday, Cec Cather looked out their window at bundled-up Bob and decided her husband deserved a bigger audience. So she called the newspaper.

Its a remarkable shovel. Thats a strange sight to see, she said.

Besides, she asked, how many 90-year-old men do you see pushing snow around?

About the shovel: Its called a Sno Wovel, and Cec stumbled across it a few years back on Amazon.com. She ended up spending more than $200 on it as a Christmas present for Bob (although it now sells for $140).

When relatives assembled it, they were skeptical.

Indiana steps up efforts to repair crumbling roads - February 6, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    INDIANAPOLIS -

The extreme cold weather and all the snow has wreaked havoc on area roads, but the state has a new plan to repair all the potholes.

With more than 30,000 lane miles to tend to, INDOT has a lot of potholes to fill and it is asking for your help in finding them.

"We are asking Hoosiers to report potholes," Gov. Mike Pence said Thursday.

"We have set up a Twitter account and our website, so people can fill out our web form where they are seeing potholes and where we need to report," said Ryan Gallagher, INDOT.

INDOT crews were already attending to those potholes on Thursday. One crew was putting down hot mix on US 135 south of Indianapolis.

"The pothole surge will be targeted. We will run alternate 12-hour shifts on weekdays and weekends to repair as many potholes as possible, as quickly as possible," Pence said.

The governor says the state has already spent $2.9 million fixing potholes and he says money for this surge is already in the budget. Workers have already put in 81,000 man hours filling potholes and they have been put on notice about what is to come.

"If I asked you to fill every pothole in two days, that is the kind of effort you need to put forward to get this done," Gallagher said.

"That will include alternating 12-hour shifts, supplemental crews and additional hours to address the problem," Pence added.
