HVAC System for City Hall Given Nod -
February 8, 2014 by

Things may soon be heating up at Union City Hall.
The personnel, finance and public works committee Monday is recommending the approval of an approximate $400,000 bid for a new heating and air-conditioning system to replace the current boiler system.
Lakebrink Heating and Air Conditioning submitted the only bid to be the general contractor for the new variable refrigerant flow system.
City Administrator Russel Rost said the new system would replace an antiquated HVAC system installed piecemeal over several years.
It would eliminate a hodgepodge of systems used over the years, he said.
The new system would provide heat in areas that are not temperature controlled now, including the auditorium and the city clerks office.
One of the reasons we selected this system is because it is energy efficient, said Rost. Even with cooling the auditorium, we dont expect to increase our energy costs the energy cost will be a wash even with the addition of the huge amount of volume.
He added that the city clerks office is heated with space heaters.
The variable refrigerant flow system would eliminate the need for natural gas at city hall, Rost said.
Alderman Dustin Bailey questioned if the new system would allow for expansion of city hall.

Kitchen remodeling, man caves and cooking demonstrations were among the big features at the Great Northeast Home Show going on at the Times Union center this weekend.
Man caves are all the rage. Just how much you want to spend is really the question. One from Solid Surface Craftsman out of Schenectady will run you a cool $55,000.
We've done some wall paneling and smaller bar set-ups at people's houses that are five to six thousand dollars with the countertops. It's all over the board. We've done some for $150,000, said Alan Boulant of Solid Surface.
The lavish display was only a fraction of the exhibits at the 33rd Annual Great Northeast Home Show. People packed the Times Union Center to see the latest and greatest in home products.
There's a little bit for everybody to enjoy. We have a bounce bounce for the kids, face painting, Mr. Twisty, says Tammy Mortier of the Times Union Center.
You can be entertained while learning. There were seminars on ways to cut your heating bill. Six local chefs also took to the stage to battle it out for the top spot.
One of the most popular spots in the house is the kitchen. People looking to do some improvements had a lot of ideas to choose from with Earl B. Feiden Appliances out of Colonie. They were showcasing new stainless steel refrigerators and more.
Marcella's Appliances from Schenectady featured stoves that cook with magnets. John Marcella said, Its more efficient than gas and electric. It cooks quicker than gas and its a better form of cooking.
The Home Show will continue through Sunday.

The planned construction of a new local office for Yahoo is on the fast track to open this fall.
The weather could have been better, but even the snow and ice couldn't dim the excitement surrounding Wednesday's groundbreaking ceremony at the University of Illinois Research Park.
With UI officials, community leaders and company employees present, Yahoo broke ground on a planned two-story, 40,000-square-foot office building at First Street and Hazelwood Drive. Yahoo is moving from its current 24,000-square-foot quarters to the new facility, which will be south of the I Hotel.
In addition to the construction, the company plans to add about 80 employees over the coming year, bringing its total local workforce to roughly 200. The economic possibilities are many, including great employment opportunities for UI graduates.
Headquartered in Sunnyvale, Calif., Yahoo is a multinational Internet corporation principally known for its Web portal, search engine and related Web services, including email and news sites. Founded in 1994, its explosive growth is reflective of the astonishing advances in tech-related business. It's estimated that roughly 700 million people visit Yahoo websites each month.
That's a lot of eyeballs, explaining, in part, why the company's local office will focus on digital advertising.
Yahoo first moved here in 2007, filling a void created when Motorola closed its local office. So far, it's been a great partnership, one that shows every sign of continuing to grow.

Roof replacement | Re-roofing tips -

Whether you buy a home or have lived in one since it was built, chances are you will need to replace the roof at some point. Most roofs last twenty to thirty years, but natural disasters and other mishaps can shorten your roofs lifespan by a significant amount. One of the best roofing tips to get the job done right and save yourself time and money, it is best to hire a professional from the beginning. Re-roofing can be done by yourself, but the cost of wasted materials and time spent trying to get it done right ends up very costly.
Doing an inspection of your roof twice per year will help you find cracked, warped or missing shingles. These inspections also reveal separated seams, damaged flashing and gutter blockages, which over time cause damage to your roof. Inside your home look for cracked paint discolored ceiling areas or peeling wallpaper, especially near the ceiling as signs of potential roof damage. By identifying issues with your roofing systems you can often repair for sometime before needing to replace your roof.
Leaks are caused most commonly by faulty flashing around chimney skylights and vents; typically, a roof does not need to be replaced due to these leaks. If your roof is over a decade old, you may need to replace the roof especially if it appears worn or rotten in large areas. Snow and ice also cause problems as well as condensation and high winds. New roofing systems are often needed to correct these issues. The new system will include specialized underlayment, vents or specially treated shingles.
Choosing a contractor is the most important choice you make in re-roofing your home. There are many considerations you need to make, price is usually the deciding factor, however workmanship, insurance, and accountability are also very important factors in choosing the right contractor.
When talking with various contractors to get estimates be sure that they remove the hold roofing materials down to the underlying wood sheathing, which is the plywood or plants attached to the rafters of your house/attic. It was common practice to place new layers of shingles over the old ones in order to lengthen the life span of a roof; you want to be sure that your contractor will take off all of the single layers. This practice fell out of use due to the longer lifespan of fiberglass-based shingles. By going down to the sheathing, the roofer can install the proper ventilation, flashing and waterproofing systems for you new roof, as well as making the needed repairs to any rotten or damaged wood. In addition, nailing or screwing the sheathing down can help prevent damages from high winds in areas that face this issue.
Why not just a roof? A roof is made of many parts, each one needs to work well with the others, and this makes it a system. Be sure you can compare the roofing materials used in the system to make the best price for both quality and affordability. Each component has varying strengths, be sure if you choose budge shingles that the underlayment is higher quality than you would normally select to make up for the lacking quality of shingle. Your contractor can suggest the best combination for your budget and home.
The underlayment, flashing, ventilation, drip edge, and gutters if you replace them, are all considered minor details by many people, however they can me the difference between a water tight home and an indoor swimming pool, in your living room.
The outer most layer of your roofing material offers many options and often gains the most consideration because it is visible. Fiberglass reinforced shingles are the most popular because of price and durability, as well as thousands of styles and colors available. Fiberglass laminated shingles, commonly called architectural singles are also affordable, and popular when compared to traditional high-end roofing means, such as metal, tile and slate. Artificial slate roofs are also typically made of architectural shingles.
This depends on many factors, if everything is perfect it can be done in less than three days, for the typical residential home. Rarely do things go perfectly. The weather can affect the roofing process, as can the number of workers employed by your contractor. An unexpected complication is one of the most common delays of a re-roofing project. Additional damage that was unforeseen as well as a shortage of materials can cause delays, sometimes ranging into the weeks.
Choosing a competent contractor will make your re-roofing process go quickly and smoothly. Replacing your roof does not need to be a lengthy and complicated process, you should be able to make a few basic choice, usually about the contractor and materials used, then sit back and watch the work be done quickly and effectively the first time. Sitting in your nice dry home during a thunderstorm can be peaceful, especially when you know the water will stay outside of your home.

Roof replacement | Re-roofing tips
Kennedale, TX (PRWEB) February 07, 2014
A homes roof is a vital part of the structure. In addition to protecting the interior from rain, the roof also serves to solidify the walls and hold everything together. As water works its way into a structure through the roof, it can cause significant damage. Its important to have roof problems corrected quickly, and the roof will have to be replaced as it starts to wear down. Quick Roofing now offers full roof replacements along with several other key services.
The fully licensed and insured team at Quick Roofing works on large and small buildings alike. They offer residential and commercial services, including multi-family housing structures. As residential roofers, they work with tile slate, standing seam metal and Decra roofing materials. They also offer affordable composition shingles and modified bitumen. On residential roof replacements they can provide services for EPDM, TPO, asphalt, metal and even green roofing options.
In addition to installing new roofs, the company also offers a range of associated roofing services and accessories. Professionally installed skylights help illuminate a room while adding visual appeal to the interior. New gutters ensure that the foundation is protected by properly diverting water. Home and business owners who find roofing damage after a storm can also call them for a thorough inspection and assistance with any repairs.
The temperature inside an attic impacts the house below and the roofing system above. In freezing temperatures, an attic thats too warm leads to ice dams and water leaks. During the hot summer months, soaring temperatures in the attic cause the roof to heat up, and shingles can be damaged by high temperatures in the attic. The result is a roof that fails prematurely, but this can be avoided by having the attic ventilation inspected and corrected. Quick Roofing also offers this valuable service to help prolong the life of their roofing systems.
Quick Roofing offers free storm damage inspections, free estimates on replacement roofs and competitive prices. Theyre located in Kennedale, and they provide services to homes and businesses throughout the greater Fort Worth area and Central Texas.
