Garden Views: Consider adding edibles to your gardens landscape - February 11, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

As I look out the window and see the thermometer at minus 25, I start wishing for spring, still a long way off.

Seed catalogs and tree order forms can take your mind to a warmer time. As you browse and make your lists think about adding some edibles to your landscape. Edible landscapes have become more popular recently, but this is far from a new idea. Many of the ancient gardens of Babylonia, Egypt or medieval cloistered gardens used edible plants for their gardens.

Edible landscaping doesnt mean turning your whole yard into a vegetable garden. By using the same principles of landscaping such as balance, unity, pattern and inter connection you can include an assortment of edible plants into your landscape. You can have an attractive and productive landscape.

There is a large selection of plants or seeds to use in your edible landscape, including both annual and perennial plants. Many of the trees and shrubs in the catalog are natives which typically have the advantage of less watering and maintenance.

The following plants and seeds are usually readily available. Check those seed catalogs or the Internet for more. Now is a good time to order seeds so you have them in time to give them a head start under lights.

Rainbow chards, colorful kales can easily be incorporated into a flower bed and provide greens for tasty and nutritious salads. Herbs like chives, rosemary, thyme, parsley are all easy to grow and very good in the kitchen. Creeping thyme, chamomile and strawberry can be used as ground covers. Sweet or hot peppers are also available in many colorful varieties but be careful with children, touching hot peppers and then your eyes can be quite painful.

Shrubs with edible fruit such as raspberry, high-bush cranberry, serviceberry or hazelnut could be used as a hedge or a divider. If you dont pick the fruit the wildlife will love to pick it for you. Apple trees, flowering crab, wild plum and sand cherry can be used in the landscape. If you plant an apple tree, remember they are not self-pollinating so you will need two varieties. A neighbors tree will work well.

Many of these trees and shrubs are available quite reasonably at your Soil and Water Conservation District sales. They are usually sold in bundles of 25. If 25 trees are more than you need, talk to your friends and neighbors and share a few selections. Anoka, Isanti and Ramsey counties all have annual spring tree sales. For now, lets stay warm, dream and plan. Then we will be ready when spring comes.

The Anoka County master gardeners invite you to visit our web page http://anokamastergardeners.org/ Go to hot topics for information on the Home Landscaping and Garden Fair, plant sale and the plant diagnostic clinics.

Act Global Issues Tips to Consider When Purchasing Synthetic Lawn Turf - February 11, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Austin, TX (PRWEB) February 11, 2014

An increasing number of homes, businesses, golf courses and municipalities are realizing the benefits of synthetic grass as a low-maintenance, environmentally-friendly and attractive landscape solution. Buyers can maximize their investment and avoid poor service and products by doing proper research and following smart purchasing guidelines.

John Baize, director of synthetic turf manufacturer Act Global, said that while there are hundreds of reputable companies, there have also been instances of false manufacturing claims and dishonest business practices.

By informing buyers of important issues to consider, we can help them avoid the frustration of poor quality product and service, said Baize.

Baize, who also serves as Chairman of the Board of the Synthetic Turf Council (STC), said the organization is focused on serving as a resource for trustworthy information about synthetic turf and promoting ethical industry standards. The STC has published Considerations When Buying Synthetic Grass for Landscape Use, which provides guidelines on artificial turf selection, suppliers, manufacturers and installation practices. The document is available on the STC website for download.

Act Global offers Ten Tips for Purchasing Synthetic Landscape Turf:

    1. Know your suppliers.

Research the seller to understand their reputation and stability. Check their website, local Registrar of Contractors (ROC), business registrations and research any complaint records online. Most companies should be licensed, bonded and insured. Inquire about the companys quality checks and procedures. ISO 9001 Quality Certification is a good indicator of manufacturing practices, as a world-recognized standard for quality management.

    2. Check references.

Know the companys business history and ask for installation references, both recent jobs and ones that are several years old.

Dune bashing up 'Scary Hill' - February 11, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    STORY HIGHLIGHTS

(CNN) -- If you think drag racing is extreme, you should try doing it uphill and on sand.

Dune bashing is an action-packed motorsport popular in the Gulf, enjoyed by both local Emiratis and foreign tourists alike.

It is not for the fainthearted and accidents are not uncommon. It is a sport that enthusiasts say requires not only speed and power, but also nerves of steel.

Perhaps nothing tests all of these better than the Liwa International Festival, which ended last month, where 100 dune-bashing competitors battled it out to be the fastest up the tallest sand hill in the UAE.

For me, it's normal because I'm Bedouin. This is not scaring me Ahmed Al-Mashgouni

The 30-meter-high "Scary Hill" (Tel Moreeb in Arabic) earns its name thanks to the dizzyingly 50-degree steep slope.

850k plans to transform run-down Horseshoe Common set to begin

1:00pm Monday 10th February 2014 in News By Melanie Vass

CHANGES: Artists impression of how Horseshoe Common could look after road and landscaping improvements

AN 850,000 package of improvements to change the street layout and landscape of one of Bournemouths most run-down areas will begin next week.

The redevelopment of Horseshoe Common will see the roundabout at Old Christchurch Road replaced with a junction and a new shared space will be created between Horseshoe Common and Old Christchurch Road.

New walking and cycling routes will be created and unnecessary railings and signs will be removed to give the area a less cluttered appearance.

The area will also benefit from new street furniture, trees and shrubs.

Taxi parking and bus stops will be relocated and Old Christchurch Road, Dean Park Crescent and Madeira Road will be included in a 20mph zone. A night-time road closure will also be put in place.

The project will last for around six months and the first phase will see Dean Park Crescent closed to all vehicles for approximately six weeks.

During this time, there will be no access from Old Christchurch Road and limited access from Richmond Hill for residents and businesses only.

Green light for $122m Woolnorth dairy expansion - February 11, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

ABC The expansion plan will make Woolnorth one of the largest grass-fed dairy operations in the world.

A $122 million dairy expansion at the Van Diemen's Land Company in north-west Tasmania has been given state approval.

VDL wants to double milk production at its Woolnorth property, creating 11 new dairy farms by converting beef operations and clearing land for another two.

The expansion plan will make Woolnorth one of the largest grass-fed dairy operations in the world.

The company has not yet announced investors for the project, but told shareholders late last year there were several interested parties.

Chief executive Mike Guerin says talks are progressing well.

"The sooner we can finish that equity raising obviously the better, it's a key part to this development program," he said.

The company has altered its land clearing plans after input from conservation groups.

Mr Guerin says planned native vegetation clearing has been reduced by half.

"We were thinking of clearing about half the remaining uncleared land on Woolnorth, or about 3,500 hectares," he said.

Residents irate over work on potential travellers site in Poole - February 11, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Residents irate over work on potential travellers site in Poole

5:40am Monday 10th February 2014 in News By Diana Henderson

CREEKMOOR residents are outraged after Borough of Poole began clearing land being considered for a controversial traveller stopping site, before it has gone before the planning committee.

Irate residents, who are complaining about a lack of consultation and democracy over the chosen sites, are more than ever convinced that the council has decided to forge ahead regardless.

Two possible sites on land at Marshes End, Creekmoor and off Broadstone Way have been put forward and planning permission for 12 pitches at the former site is due to be sought in March.

However council workmen have been spotted on the site clearing it of undergrowth although Borough of Poole denies that any construction work is underway.

Creekmoor resident Terry Hughes said: This deceitful and disgusting behaviour by our council makes me feel ashamed to be a Poole resident.

He said the council had caused great distress to many elderly residents and it was now becoming clear that, Creekmoor was always going to be the target for this, no matter what obstacles were going to be encountered.

Another Creekmoor resident Edward Webster said he was disappointed that work appeared to have been started without planning permission.

The application does not go to committee until next month so one assumes the outcome is already known, he said. I am told the work is to prevent birds nesting which would delay development.
