LAWN grubs have been a hot topic of discussion among Bathurst's gardening enthusiasts, as the pests have been responsible for destroying some beautiful lawns in recent weeks.
Bathurst Gardeners' Club president Peter Varman said he had received a number of calls from concerned residents whose lawns had been infested by the grubs.
Mr Varman said the grubs in question were the larvae of the Black Lawn Beetle.
"The black beetle lays its eggs into the ground, and as the larvae grow they eat the roots," he said. "When they eat the roots of the grass, the grass dies."
Mr Varman said that the best way to determine if you had a problem with the lawn grubs was to closely examine any dead patches of grass that appeared.
"One of the things that will really show the problem is if you grab the top of the grass and pull," he said. "If it comes off easy, there is something wrong."
Mr Varman noted that a common mistake was for people to simply attribute dead patches of grass to the dry and hot conditions.
"I've had a couple of calls from people saying that patches of their grass have gone brown, and they think it is because they are not putting enough water on it."

Spring is fast approaching and it is important for homeowners to prepare their yards and trees for the warmer weather. Fortunately, with the proper assistance, this can be done by performing any or all of the following recommendations.
First, lawn core aeration is an important treatment for thatch accumulation and for promoting overall lawn health by giving roots and soil access to air, water and fertilization. It is the best way to reduce a thatch problem by removing plugs of soil, roots, shoots and grass plants. The core is then deposited on to the surface of the lawn and leaves room for air, water and seeds. During the winter, many lawns are susceptible to snow mold which can destroy the grass resulting in a thinning turf.
Another important part of yard care is restarting the sprinkler or irrigation system. Senske advises that homeowners hire a professional technician to restart in-ground irrigation systems if there are concerns after a very cold winter. This could be the key to avoiding any unnecessary and costly repairs as a result of a broken pipe.
In addition, it is also important for homeowners to take the time to clean up yard debris, remove broken branches, or rake up dead leaves. This will allow for new growth and prevent lawn problems when the warmer weather arrives.
Senske has experienced and licensed professional technicians to assist in aeration and irrigation. For more information on preparing yards for spring, visit Senske Services for a free estimate.

Scenes from a snow day -

Observer reporters fanned out around the region to capture the winter landscape. Here's what they saw:
Snow follows this couple
The snow followed Mike Kutner and Andrea Platano here from Ohio. The couple recently moved to Fayetteville in hopes of escaping the white stuff.
"It's such a nuisance," Kutner said Wednesday while doing laundry at Koretizing Dry Cleaning and Laundry. "This is nothing. We're from the snow belt where it snows feet at a time.
"This ain't that bad for us, it's just another day."
Trudging through snow-covered streets, it took the couple more than 45 minutes Tuesday to drive a route that typically takes 15 minutes.
"The roads are awful," Kutner said.
Platano disagreed.
"It's the other drivers who are awful," she said. "Plus, these roads don't really get plowed."
Diana Cann, manager of the laundry facility, said growing up in New York has made her a pro at driving in icy conditions, so she's quick to dole out advice.

Snow blankets the Scenic City -

CHATTANOOGA, TN (WRCB) -
The Scenic City lived up to its name Wednesday, as the landscape was transformed into a Winter wonderland.
As the snow started falling, kids made a mad dash to the big hill at Renaissance Park in Chattanooga.
"I opened the window and I'm like, staring at it. Then I run into my mom's room. I'm like, 'It's snowing,'" says Sarah Setlich.
Nine-year-old Setlich says it is anything goes when it comes to sledding.
"I've been sledding down on this," she says pointing to a boogie board. "It's sort of like a surfboard, but you use it on your stomach. It's usually meant for the beach. But I thought this would be pretty cool for sledding," she says.
She and others say a snow like this only comes along so often, and those cooped up inside are missing out.
"They're missing out on something awesome that God has given us to play with," says Logan Henley.
For Heisman Alvarez and his family, it was the perfect day to play on the Walnut Street bridge.
"We've been taking pictures. And we've been running and I slipped," he says with a laugh.

PARIT BUNTAR: One of Malaysias biggest mangrove ecosystems is under threat as land clearing activities have begun at a patch near Kampung Kuala Gula.
At over 40,000ha, the Matang mangrove forest in Peraks Kerian district is the largest mangrove ecosystem in the peninsula, but it was subject to a series of land clearing activities last week.
Friends of Mangroves (FoM) chairman Zakaria Mohamed said about 6ha of mangroves had been cleared to pave way for the construction of a shrimp farm located about 30km from here.
The area is near the popular Kuala Gula bird sanctuary, where an estimated 200,000 birds stop over during the migration season between August and April every year.
What upsets us the most is seeing our efforts in rehabilitating the mangrove swamps go down the drain, Zakaria said.
Since the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, a heightened sense of awareness about the importance of mangroves has been ingrained in the locals, especially in the Kerian area, which was one of the coastal areas in Perak to be hit.
Villagers from Kampung Kuala Gula are concerned that the removal of the plot of mangroves from a swamp by the name of Teluk Rubiah here will lead to even more land clearing.
We have planted countless mangrove trees in the last seven years with the support of government agencies and other NGOs. But now, we do not know how much longer we can keep up with our endeavours, said Zakaria.
The 500ha Teluk Rubiah mangroves not to be confused with a bay with the same name near Sitiawan, also in Perak are 6km away from the village.
Besides migratory bird watching, the Kuala Gula area is well known for ecotourism, including village homestays, boat rides to observe mangroves, fireflies, cage culture farms, traditional fishermen at work, cockle culture and shrimp paste processing factories.

JAKARTA, Feb 12 (Bernama) -- At least three flight schedules were delayed in Riau of Sumatra due to poor feasibility incurred by haze from land clearing and the satellite observation shows a steep rise in the number of hot spots on Sumatra and Borneo islands, Xinhua news agency reported officials as saying here on Wednesday.
Several of the hot spots are located in forest conservation areas on the Sumatra island, including in the provinces of Riau, North Sumatra, Aceh, Jambi, and South Sumatra, Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, spokesman for the national disaster agency, said.
"The feasibility in Riau was less than 500 meters so that the flight witnessed disruption. Yesterday (Tuesday) three flight schedules of Garuda Indonesia, Lion Air and Air Asia were delayed, " he told Xinhua via phone.
According to a satellite observation, the hot spots scaled up and more than doubled to 470 on Tuesday on Sumatra and Borneo islands from 187 a day earlier, said Sutopo.
Indonesia has been battered by fires resulting from land clearing for new plantations since the 1990s, with haze caused enveloping neighboring Asean countries that hampered business spheres and incurred multi-billion US dollars of financial loss.
Indonesian authorities would take comprehensive measures, including using water bombs, modifying weather and enforcing law, to extinguish ongoing fires on Sumatra and Borneo islands in an effort to prevent a repeat of haze enveloping neighboring countries like years ago from happening, Sutopo said.
The condition of the dry season this year, which is forecast to be drier than in previous years, and weak El Nino, are threatening to exacerbate the spread of fire, he said.
