Nine things to do to save time and money for the spring - February 27, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Thursday, February 27th, 2014 Issue 09, Volume 18.

SAN DIEGO There are nine money-saving tasks that homeowners can do during the winter that will prevent problems in the spring. These tips have been provided by RepairClinic.com.

    1) Perform pre-season maintenance of outdoor power equipment and garden tools.

Inspect wear and damage on lawn mowers, pressure washers, string trimmers, edgers and other outdoor power and landscaping equipment. Review owners manuals, replace worn or damaged parts with new components and clean the equipment. Stock up on degreaser, filters, spark plugs and other essentials.

    2) Dedicate a few hours per weekend to organizing closets, cabinets, basements, attics and other storage locations.

The annual home chores dubbed "spring cleaning" doesnt have to wait until spring. Avoid several organization projects in one weekend. Instead, tackle smaller organization projects over many weekends for greater efficiency.

    3) Clean off refrigerator condenser coils.

"Dirty, dust-covered condenser coils require refrigerators to work harder to remove heat," said Chris Hall, president and co-founder of RepairClinic.com. "A long-handled bristle brush and a vacuum make it easy to clean off the coils."

    4) Stock up on water filters.

"Refrigerator ice-maker and water dispenser filters should be replaced at least every six months, but depending on usage, homeowners may need to replace the filters more frequently," said Hall. "Increased temperatures often bring more frequent use of ice makers and water dispensers."

Mono widening still too costly - February 27, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The cost of the multi-million-dollar Mono Way widening project in Sonora remains higher than originally expected despite a second round of bids by the city.

Three contractors submitted proposals this month for the project, which calls for widening the stretch of Mono Way from Greenley Road to Fir Drive to ease traffic, as well as building a retaining wall, replacing a 36-inch culvert and earthwork.

The lowest bid came from Modesto-based George Reed Inc. at $3.9 million, with Sierra Mountain Construction of Sonora ($4.35 million) and McGuire and Hester of Oakland ($4.9 million) also submitting bids.

The last round of bids ranged from $3.4 million to $4.6 million, and were thrown out because they exceeded the initial $2.7 million project estimate. The Sonora City Council opted to re-advertise in December.

However, Sonora City Engineer Gerard Fuccillo said the latest round of bids also included alternative proposals lowering costs on a retaining wall and culvert replacement that are part of the widening. Under one, a retaining wall that will stretch from Roselyn Lane to Fir Drive would have a typical concrete face instead of a decorative rock facade.

Void-deck art galleries to be launched in Jurong - February 27, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

SINGAPORE: Imagine being greeted by a splash of colours each time you leave your house.

This has been the experience for residents at Holland Ave Block 8 for the past two years after their void deck was converted into a pop-up art gallery.

The first void deck gallery was launched at Pipit Road in 2011, with the second at Holland Ave introduced the following year.

Come April, two more void decks in Singapore will be converted to art galleries.

The void decks at Blocks 749 and 750 at Jurong West St 73 will be dressed up but with a different focus.

The theme of the gallery is Singapore's 50th anniversary and there will be some 30 artworks showcasing significant events, people and products in Singapore including the Merlion and the chilli crab.

The people behind these galleries say they hope to bring arts closer to the community.

Faris Basharahil, founder of non-profit arts enterprise Social Creatives, said: "We believe that art is not 'atas' (high class), it is for anyone and everyone. This kind of void-deck art gallery is a free-concept art gallery which is opened 24 hours a day, seven days a week."

Organisers say they hope to launch similar galleries in other HDB estates such as Hong Kah North, Serangoon, and Tampines.
