    Raising Your Home's I-Q - February 27, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

By Jessa Goddard Thursday February 27, 2014 3:46 PM UPDATED: Thursday February 27, 2014 3:56 PM COLUMBUS, Ohio -

The "Smart Home" is the latest in home security and management. It is now on display at the Columbus Dispatch Home and Garden Show.

The Smart House gives a whole new meaning to the flip of a switch.

By using a computer, tablet or smartphone, one can remotely access and control virtually every inch of the 900 square feet house.

Lowes Assistant Store Manager, Kevin Verbryke, said, So everything communicates with the centralized hub, which we have located up here on top of this bookcase. That's essentially the brain for the whole home.

The home features a kitchen, bedroom, bathroom, and entertainment area. These rooms were constructed and are on display inside the Ohio Expo Center.

Things such as adjusting the thermostat, turning on the fireplace, or turning down the blinds are all controlled using Lowe's exclusive new "Iris" system.

Verbryke went on to explain, They want to have the convenience of being able to monitor their homes and get alerts as to what's happening in their home, while they're not there.

The house allows its owner to virtually check on family members and pets in real time, using one of three kits: safe and secure, comfort and control or the smart kit, which ranges in price from $179 to $299 dollars.

Verbryke described the smart kit, It's very simple to set up. It's all wireless; it runs through your Wi-Fi network within your home. You set it up with a laptop or MacBook something like that, and it's actually quite simple just to pare all the devices to your hub.

Signs That Its Time for a New Furnace - February 27, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Oakland, Pennsylvania (PRWEB) February 27, 2014

As the end of winter approaches, it may seem like a strange time to consider investing in a new furnace, but it is actually the most ideal time for homeowners to consider this option. Since furnaces are still in use, it is a good time to pay attention to any issues that may indicate the furnace is approaching the end of its lifespan. Metro Heating & Cooling recommends noting the following signs:

Age is the best indication that a furnace may be in need of replacement. The average lifespan of a furnace is around 16-20 years depending on the initial quality and the maintenance performed over the years. Its wise to start looking for a replacement as the furnace approaches this age range. It is easier to research and compare prices when there isnt an urgent need to replace a furnace, rather than when the furnace has stopped functioning.

Pay attention to energy bills. Has the gas or electric bill been higher than normal for no apparent reason? Older furnaces work less efficiently and may have to be on longer or more frequently, which can impact energy bills.

If the furnace is older and there have been issues or repairs in the last few years, that can be an indication that parts are wearing out. While some issues and repairs are normal and expected, several repairs towards the end of a units lifetime may not be worth the expense. The money could be better spent on a new furnace that wont need frequent repairs and wont need to be replaced in the near future.

Other obvious signs, such as strange noises, the inability to keep the house warm, excessive dust in the air, and dry air being circulated throughout the house, can all indicate that a furnace is in need of repair and if its older, it may need to be replaced. A new furnace can save money but it can also keep the home more comfortable. When Oakland furnace installation is needed, contact Metro Heating & Cooling for more information.

Knoxville's Market Square to undergo landscape renovations - February 27, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Knoxville city work crews have already started laying a new paved walkway in Market Square.

The plans are to cut down on maintenance costs and protect the roots of six sawtooth oaks on the south end of the Square. A city spokesperson says those trees are already showing signs of stress.

Well be creating a multi-use area that will be beneficial to people and to the trees, says City Urban Forester Kasey Krouse.

This will be a more user-friendly space. Its an extension of whats in Krutch Park landscaping with a walkway.

The south lawn has been a trouble spot for the city before; crews have overseeded and put down new sod 2-3 times a year, but heavy use continued to kill the grass and is compacting the root systems for the six trees.

These trees are the staple image of Market Square, Krouse said.

The project is expected to cost between $6,000 to $8,000.

Were wanting attractive green space that also prevents wasted and, up until now, unsuccessful maintenance, said Public Service Director David Brace. Brace says the regular re-sodding was both expensive and required keeping people off the new grass for several months out of the year.

The landscaping project is expected to be completed by the end of March.

THE Devonport City Council will decide at its March meeting what action to take over the Arnold Richardson grandstand at East Devonport's Girdlestone Park, which has to be repaired, removed or replaced.

Council works assistant general manager Matthew Atkins said a workshop was held on Monday where options were discussed.

They included full refurbishment of the roof, removal or leaving it on and making it safe.

Mr Atkins said the last option would cost around half replacement costs estimated at $70,000.

Devonport Little Athletics Club was not happy about the roof being removed.

DLA president Cheryl Fisher said the club's 156 members and their families used the grandstand each week at club meetings over summer.

She said the grandstand was used by schools at inter high.

Building permit fees could increase - February 27, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Fuel costs tied to field inspections are a primary reason Warren Countys building permit fees might be going up, Emergency Management Director John Elfer said Wednesday.

Elfer told the Vicksburg Lions Club the current $5 fee for developments valued at more than $500 and a $10 charge for buildings in floodplains net the permitting side of his department about $2,000 annually. Elfer has pushed county supervisors for a flat $25 fee for all residential and commercial sheds, gazebos, storage structures and other buildings.
