There are many foreigners in Wuhan who need to deal with issues like renting houses, looking for maids, car rental and more. Yesterday, MaxHouse International Services Co., Ltd. (http://www.maxhouse.net/), the first company that provides comprehensive services for foreigners in Wuhan, was founded.
MaxHouse (which is at Room 704, Huatong Mansion, Jiefang Park Road, Wuhan) mainly provides house rental, car rental, night life orientation, Mandarin training, immigration, city orientation, international school guide, blind date, employment and legal consulting, and business communication related services. The founder of this corporation, Mr. Max Yang, is a Wuhanese who has studied and worked in the USA for many years. He knows the inconvenience of living overseas, and this is the reason that he created the company to provide relocation services for the foreigners in Wuhan.
Now, many great corporations listed in the Fortune 500, such as General Motors, HSBC, Renault, Volvo and more, have set up their factories or offices in Wuhan. According to the Exit-Entry Administration Department of Wuhan City Public Security Bureau, the number of foreigners in Wuhan will reach 300,000 in 2014.
Larry Alonso, the manager of an Italian Company, Smartcard, says there are only few companies that provide personal services for foreigners in Wuhan. When he arrived in Wuhan, he faced many difficulties like where to live, what to eat and how to search for an apartment.
Mr. and Ms. Rommel Ivan now have to stay at a hotel with their children. Mr. Rommel complained that he was in need of an interpreter who can speak Spanish fluently, a reliable chauffeur, a maid who can speak English or Spanish, an international bilingual school and a cozy American-style house. But it was hard for them to find the related services in Wuhan.
Without the norms and standards of International services, expats can only find the related information on different personal websites on which its difficult for expat to distinguish whether the information is true or not. The websites are not so easy to be supervised as physical stores; the problems such as low quality translation, dispute of house sublease, etc. happen often.
It is reported that as soon as MaxHouse International Services Co., Ltd was founded, it received the orders from Honeywell Inc.; MaxHouse provides custom life-support services to Honeywell's senior executives working in Wuhan. According to the business administrative department of Jiangan District, because more and more expats live and work in Wuhan and the demand of foreign services is increasing, the internationalized Wuhan can only live up to its reputation by legalized and normalized foreign services.

Daricus and Daryl Releford sell chocolate-covered strawberries online year-round and in stores seasonally

Daricus Releford, 26, dips strawberries in white chocolate for Valentine's Day gifts on Wednesday for his business Twigedies Berries in Windsor Township. Releford launched the mostly online business with his twin brother, Daryl, about eight months ago. (Paul Kuehnel Daily Record/Sunday News)
On Wednesday, Daricus Releford sat on a stool behind a stainless-steel table in his stepfather's kitchen in Windsor Township. He gripped a pastry bag filled with red chocolate and drizzled it on a tray of white-chocolate-covered strawberries.
His twin brother, Daryl, hurried around the townhouse which resembles a commercial kitchen more than a home quietly conducting business on a Bluetooth headset and directing the operation in between calls. In the furniture-less living area, gold boxes marked "Twigedies Berries" covered another table.
Linwood Hill of Harrisburg and Heather Blosser of Grantville two Twigedies Berries employees filled and packaged orders.
The pending snowstorm had created a time crunch for the Relefords. The 26-year-old brothers, who started their online business about eight months ago, had more than 1,000 orders for Valentine's Day. They had slept about five hours total in the past two days. Along with online orders, Twigedies a name derived from the twins' high school nickname sells chocolate-covered strawberries seasonally at malls. For Valentine's Day, the berries are available at Arundel Mills and White Marsh malls in Maryland, Colonial Park Mall in Harrisburg, and Capital City Mall in Camp Hill.
Twigedies Berries start at $19.99 for six large berries. Daricus said he got the idea for the business about two years ago. He wanted to buy his mother chocolate-covered strawberries for Mother's Day, but he wasn't impressed with what was available online and in stores. Around that time, he also was going through a breakup. When something negative happens, he and his brother often choose to counter it with something positive.

LAKE GEORGE -- Town and village of Lake George officials signed a deal Monday that calls for the two municipalities to be doing some more sharing, come spring.
Both the town and village boards in a joint meeting Monday night approved an agreement for the village to take over the towns Caldwell Sewer District, and the town to take over some village parks and recreation duties, including mowing duties and overseeing lifeguards at both town and village beaches.
The one-year agreement is effective May 1, and may be renewed next year for another three-year term.
This will save each municipality out-of-pocket money, but it will also increase the services, Lake George Mayor Robert Blais said.
The town and village, whose office buildings sit across a parking lot from one another, already share some services but have taken up an effort of late to increase sharing.
Were going to do the Baywatch thing, Town Supervisor Dennis Dickinson said about the agreements provision that the town will take over the lifeguard program at the busy, village-owned Shepard Park Beach.
The town has Diamond Point Beach and Ushers Park Beach, and the town will hire, oversee and supervise lifeguards at all three beaches. The village, meanwhile, will continue to maintain Shepard Park Beach, buy necessary equipment and pay the salary of the lifeguards there.
The town will provide labor to mow and trim at Shepard Park, Village Hall, the Lake George firehouse property, Lakefront Walkway, MacDonald Park, a lot on James Street and the Recreation Center on Transfer Road all village-owned properties, at no cost to the village. The village will provide one riding lawn mower and the town will provide labor and fuel.
The village in turn, will provide labor and equipment to maintain, operate and repair the town-owned Caldwell Sewer District, inspecting the towns pump stations daily, doing annual camera inspections and making necessary repairs. Any work on the Caldwell Sewer District that the village does during regular working hours will not cost the town, but overtime labor approved in advance by the towns designated sewer commissioner will be charged to the town.
The town will also be responsible for parts, equipment and service contracts related to the sewer district, and will be billed monthly by the village.

From vacant to verdant -

Kate Dundas describes how she - a one-time 'party animal' - turned into a gardener in Yorkshire.
Landscape architect and urban designer Kate Dundas describes how she - a one-time ''party animal in Glasgow'' - turned into a gardener in Yorkshire. It is a story about what happens when a thesis-writing university student in Leeds decides to apply what she has learnt about creating healthy cities to an allotment in an industrial estate in a rough part of town.
What happens is she gets a plot in the allotment immediately, there being no waiting list, on account of the suburb's reputation. Then she starts spending time away from the ''usual crew of students'' and engaging with people of different ages, backgrounds and skill levels. And then - no matter her ''neglectful'' gardening ways - she harvests sweetcorn she has grown from seed, watercress and a bounty of other vegetables.
For Dundas, who grew up in Scotland eating deep-fried potato in buttered white bread rolls, it was a revelation.
When Dundas moved to Melbourne two years ago, she tried to get a local plot. But, as anyone who has tried to secure a space in a community garden here could have told her, it was going to be a long wait. She began growing food in the garden of the terrace house she rents in Fitzroy instead and then, late last year, helped establish 3000acres, an outfit that aims to unlock unused urban, suburban and rural spaces for food gardens.
Inspired by 596 Acres, an online set-up established in New York in 2011 that maps vacant public land and connects potential gardeners through social networking, 3000acres has today launched a website of its own. The site (3000acres.org) publishes interactive maps of Melbourne on which users can plot unused sites and observe whether other people are also interested in trying to get access to them.
Some pieces of land - along railways, for example - could potentially be gardened long-term, while other sites - such as those owned by developers awaiting planning permits - could be cultivated for a finite period.
Such is the situation with 3000acre's first community project, a privately owned site in Fitzroy that is to be developed into apartments within the next year but in the meantime is being opened (from today) to local communities for gardening. Twelve specially deposited industrial plastic containers will operate as wicking beds with a reservoir of water held in the bottom that is then drawn up (through capillary action) into the growing medium.
The garden, on a site owned by Neometro Developments, will host a series of talks this afternoon for the Sustainable Living Festival and is just one of a string of productive gardens open to the public this weekend.

Student renderings are warmly received -

MARTINSBURG - Although the temperatures were chilly, renderings of the Matthews Foundry by West Virginia University landscape architect students were warmly received Wednesday by a crowd of residents and Martinsburg city officials.
"They look great," Jim Gess of Bunker Hill said. "A lot of thought has gone into this project and it was great to get the students involved. This should pay big dividends for Martinsburg and Berkeley County."
Gess attended the informal unveiling of the landscape renderings on behalf of Richard Matthews Keller, whose mother, Hilda Matthews Keller, was the daughter of T.E. Mathews, who, along with his brothers, operated the foundry until 1994.
Journal photo by John McVey
Madison Kovall, a landscape architect student at WVU, explains her concept to redevelop the Matthews Foundry in Martinsburg to Vincent Groh, the owner of the property, Wednesday.
The two-story, limestone structure was built around 1851 by Samuel Fitz of Hanover, Pa. He specialized in metal waterwheels, and the first all-metal waterwheel may have been built in Martinsburg.
When it closed 20 years ago, the foundry was the longest continuously operating industrial site in West Virginia.
Gess said Keller, a retired U.S. Air Force colonel who grew up in Martinsburg, is interested in the foundry redevelopment project and imagines he will be pleased with the ideas the students presented Wednesday.
In October, about 30 of Professor Carrie Moore's landscape architect students toured the foundry site beside the Tuscarora Creek at the south end of the North Queen Street underpass. As a class assignment, the students created landscape and land-use designs of the foundry and surrounding property.
"They came up with some really creative ideas," Moore said Wednesday. "They embraced the historic nature of the property. They loved the historic nature of the architecture and the history of the property. And it's on a stream. You don't get a great design opportunity like that all the time."
