Land Art on show at Tin Sheds - February 14, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

A new exhibition at the University of Sydney's Tin Sheds Gallery showcases the international, award-winning work of Denton Corker Marshall - the architecture practice behind landmark buildings including the Melbourne Museum, Sydney's Governor Phillip Tower and the UK's new Stonehenge Visitor Centre.

Land Art: Nine Small Buildings feature Denton Corker Marshall's smaller design projects, which signify its long interest in compositions that unify architecture and the Australian landscape. Through models, photographs and drawings of nine small buildings, the exhibition reveals a fascinating story about the creative challenge and approach of Denton Corker Marshall.

John Denton, Founding Partner, Denton Corker Marshall said: "As Europeans, we took over the countryside and intervened to make our mark. Our interest is in exploiting this contrast through our architecture and its place in Australian landscape - sculptures in the landscape - land art."

Founded in 1972, Denton Corker Marshall's approach to architecture can be linked to the influence of the 1970s art movement 'Land Art', characterised by earthworks and monumental landscape sculptures.

Professor Peter Rowe, Harvard Graduate School of Design, said: "The one external source Denton Corker Marshall appears to allow into their architecture is modern art and, in particular, abstract, minimalist and even conceptual art."

Seven of the buildings featured in Land Art are residential houses set within diverse Victorian landscapes. From Phillip Island, Cape Schanck and the Yarra Valley, to the Melbourne suburb of Carlton, each project has a unique story, set within a contrasting landscape and environment.

The other two buildings are current international projects: the Stonehenge Visitor Centre in the UK (2014) and the new Australian Pavilion in Venice's Giardini della Biennale (2015).

The design for the Stonehenge Visitor Centre is simple, yet distinctive and sensitive to the historical significance of the monument and its surroundings. Two, single-storey pods containing exhibition, education and other visitor facilities will cater for the one million people who visit each year. It is due to officially open in April 2014.

The two-level Australian Pavilion is architecturally described as a white box contained within a black box. It is seen as an object or a container rather than a building, in which ideas can be explored. It will exhibit Australian visual arts and architecture at the prestigious Venice Biennale in 2015.

Land Art: Nine Small Buildings is the first exhibition representing Tin Sheds' renewed focus on attracting works by leading architects and designers locally and internationally. It opens at Tin Sheds on 13 February and runs until 4 April 2014. Tin Sheds is located within the Faculty of Architecture Design and Planning at the University of Sydney. Entry is via the Wilkinson Building on City Road, Camperdown.

Bees fight to a stalemate in the battle of the sexes according to new research - February 14, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    PUBLIC RELEASE DATE:

    12-Feb-2014

Contact: Dr. Eamonn Mallon ebm3@le.ac.uk 01-162-523-488 University of Leicester

Just like humans, whether or not some genes are switched on in bumblebees is a result of a battle of the sexes between genes inherited from their mother and genes inherited from their father.

Published online today (Wednesday 12 February) in the Royal Society journal, Proceedings of the Royal Society B, a new study from the University of Leicester provides new evidence for the kinship theory of evolution of genomic imprinting in bumblebees.

Each bumblebee worker inherits two copies of every gene one from their mother and one from their father. For a small number of genes, they only ever use one copy, and which copy is used depends on whether it came from their mother or their father. This is known as genomic imprinting and occurs through a process called methylation which has been found to be important in whether or not a worker bumblebee reproduces.

Lead researcher, Dr Eamonn Mallon from the University of Leicester's Department of Biology, said: "Genomic imprinting is absolutely fascinating. Paternal and maternal genes are constantly at war with each other and are selected to behave in different ways. Our study has shown that genes involved in whether a bumblebee worker can reproduce are involved in methylation; the molecular mechanism for imprinting.

"Worker bees can reproduce, but don't because the Queen is physically preventing them. When the Queen is removed from the colony, we found bees became more aggressive as they attempted to dominate reproduction.

"The kinship theory states that genomic imprinting a rather strange phenomenon evolved as a result of an eons long battle of the sexes between the genes which come from a mother and the genes that come from a father. The theory predicts that genes involved in queenless worker bees' reproduction should be imprinted."

In the first step to testing the theory, the researchers have shown that methylation a molecular switch that prevents a gene from being turned on, and the main mechanism for genomic imprinting is important in worker reproduction. By interfering in the methylation process, the researchers were successful in changing normal worker bees into reproducing bees.

Remodeling market continues to show growth - February 14, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The National Association of the Remodeling Industry's (NARI) fourth-quarter Remodeling Business Pulse (RBP) data of current and future remodeling business conditions continues to show growth. Although remodelers report the highest overall rating on business conditions, at 6.51 (from 6.41 last quarter), numbers in most other categories experienced a slight drop.

"Many remodelers entered 2014 with jobs in the pipeline, which hasn't happened in the past few years," said Tom O'Grady, chairman of NARI's Strategic Planning and Research Committee and president of O'Grady Builders, based in Drexel Hill, Pa. "Although inquiries, requests for bids and conversion of bids are down in Q4, that backlog has given remodelers confidence that the overall business conditions will remain positive."

Growth indicators in the fourth quarter of 2013 are as follows (rating is from 1 to 9, where 1 is much worse than a year ago and 9 is much better; 5 is about the same as last year):

    * Current business conditions was rated 6.51 (from 6.41 last quarter)

    * Number of inquiries fell to 6.2, a significant drop from 6.55 last quarter.

    * Requests for bids fell to 6.22 from 6.45, a significant decline from last quarter.

    * Conversion of bids to jobs continues to be the weakest measure remaining flat at 6.03.

    * Value of jobs sold declined to 6.27 from 6.31 recorded last quarter.

Conversion of bids to jobs continues to be the weakest measure when compared to the same time last year. Yet, the projected strength of sales in three months had a significant increase to 6.41 from the 6.12 recorded in September.

"The fourth quarter of this year was very strong for many remodelers, as reflected in the Remodeling Business Pulse Survey," O'Grady said. "Average sale prices continue to rise, and consumers are more comfortable spending money on projects that will increase the value of their homes."
