As cold air continues to have its grip on the Midwest, you can escape by heading to the Home and Garden Show at the Ohio Expo Center. Builderscape, Central Ohios Premier Landscape Design Build Company, is proud to be part of the show this year. It is the companys first year at the Home and Garden Show. People are ready to start making improvements to their homes as soon as the weather warms up. Its been a tough winter and everyone weve talked to has spring fever, said Matthews.

The home and garden show runs through March 2nd. Tickets are $12 dollars for adults. Show hours are Saturdays, 10 a.m. 8 p.m.; Sundays, 10 a.m. 6 p.m.; Tuesday: 3-8 p.m.; Wednesday - Friday, noon to 8 p.m.

Exchange seeks host families

Foreign Links Around the Globe is looking for families throughout the Kansas City metro area to host foreign exchange students next year. For more information, contact coordinator Candy Schoenberger at 913-592-5112 or candyschoenberger@gmail.com.

People at Spring Hill High School arent scary at all, foreign exchange students were happy to learn.

Spring Hill is a far cry from Spain, Germany and Brazil.

And thats exactly what makes the little Kansas town that straddles the Johnson-Miami County border so cool, gushed four teenage girls who are participating in the Foreign Links Around the Globe exchange program.

Candy Gonzalez, 16, and Cristina Salazar, 15, both from Spain, joined fellow exchange students Saskia Heussner, 17, of Germany, and Gabi Santana, 16, of Brazil, for an open house presentation last weekend at the Spring Hill Civic Center. The girls are spending their senior year at Spring Hill High School.

To an audience filled with interested families, the girls described the history, culture and architecture of their hometowns.

Afterward, sitting around a table at a local pizza joint, they shared some of the differences between life abroad and life in the States.

For most of them, joining the exchange program was a way to explore a culture that has fascinated them since childhood.

Doug Crowell and chef Ryan Angulo, the team behind Buttermilk Channel, have just opened a 50-seat restaurant on Atlantic Avenue in Boerum Hill. The food's French-American, of course, and the moniker is on loan from the tale of the 19th-century hermit, guide, and trapper of the same name. The menu includes and a foie-and-country-ham terrine, flounder Grenobloise, smoked sardines, and three different steak-frites options the most expensive of which is a 28-day dry-aged specimen, which comes in at a reasonable $36.

Pastry chef Erica Ohrling, an alum of Vinegar Hill House, will oversee desserts like profiteroles with fennel-pollen ice cream (veggie dessert alert!) and a pineapple-tarte tatin. Designer Joseph Foglia decked the dining room out with a hand-painted mural of an Adirondack mountain landscape and a wood-paneled bar. There's also a tree-canopied garden space that seats 40.

The restaurant is open for dinner now; expect breakfast, lunch, and brunch service soon complete with Counter Culture coffee and Bien Cuit pastries.

SINGAPORE: The Indonesian government is looking into pressing criminal and civil charges against corporations responsible for illegal land clearing.

This is seen as a significant move, and could make companies think twice before they resort to burning as a form of land clearing.

Indonesian Coordinating Minister for People's Welfare Agung Laksono, who is taking a lead in the government's response to this year's haze, said President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono wants the emergency response team to better enforce the law, in addition to increasing public awareness of the dangers of illegal land clearing.

He said: "We want to create a deterrent effect especially towards corporations, not just ordinary civilians. That includes those who are responsible, the owners which in some companies may be foreign nationals. Some of them own shares in plantation companies operating in our country, whether it be in Sumatra or Kalimantan."

In the 2013 fires, eight companies were allegedly involved in burning land in Riau. . The environment ministry is following up on seven of those cases.

One involves a Malaysian company - PT Adei Plantation & Industry - and its case is being tried at Pelalawan District Court.

The other cases have not yet been handed over to the courts as the Riau High Prosecutor's Office considers the investigation dossiers still incomplete.

Since 2013, there have been 41 cases of individuals suspected of illegally clearing land.

Civil charges have been brought against them for losses incurred and these individuals, if found guilty, could face anywhere between six months and eight years prison time.

Currently, nine provinces are affected by the haze, including five in Sumatra and four provinces in Kalimantan.

When Meg Lonergan started house-hunting in Houston in 2009, the Louisiana native fell in love with the bungalows of the Heights.

"The charm of the old bungalows, it's not so polished, with a little bit of a messy element that reminded me of Louisiana," said Lonergan, the owner of LeSueur Interiors. "I like that kind of character."

Lonergan quickly settled on a century-old Acadian bungalow, with an offer accepted before her husband, Tim, even set foot inside the home. Arriving from Tim's homeland of New Zealand, the Lonergans moved in with a few suitcases of clothes and books and their wedding presents. In the four years since, they've filled their home with thoughtful art, bargain antique finds and a mix of Southern touches and global inspiration - not to mention two new major additions, 2-year-old Julian and 4-month-old Margot.

To accommodate her growing family, Lonergan transformed the second bedroom from a home office into a nursery. She used kid-friendly materials around the house, such as durable seagrass rugs and Louis Ghost chairs for the dining room table, rather than upholstered seats. Despite the changes, her commitment to maintaining a design-forward home is evident in the nursery. Dramatic navy walls are balanced by pops of gold (including on the cradle), an antique Khotan rug and an exotic bamboo armoire.

"I didn't really want to have a room only suitable for a baby for 12 months, and then need a more big boy or big girl room and have to change things around," said Lonergan. "I wanted a room they could grow into. My philosophy on kids' spaces is to make them not be specific to age. I like kids' rooms to feel sophisticated and not too saccharine."

The wall color, Farrow & Ball's Black Blue, was inspired by a display wall at Boxwood Interiors.

"It just took my breath away, the depth and the quality of color. I loved it, but I thought 'Is it going to be goth?' "

Overwhelmed by the dark intensity, Lonergan tried a more traditional navy for two days before reverting to her initial choice.

"It's really cozy and it looks good with gold. It wouldn't have worked without an element of contrast, though. The seagrass carpet, the light drapes and the huge mirror lightens it up."

Over the crib, on the wall is a sculpture by Houston artist Tara Conley that Lonergan found at Laura Rathe Fine Art when she was ten weeks pregnant with her son. In gold script, it reads "I love you more than I know how to."

SPRING 2014 Interior designer Perla Lichi (http://www.perlalichi.com) says that bright colors such as hot pink are wonderful accent colors for home dcor.

Confident people with bold tastes and outgoing personalities seem to enjoy surrounding themselves with vibrant colors, says the designer.

She proves her point by including The Happy Palace as a major chapter in her new coffee table book Palaces of the World. This featured home is awash with bright jewel tone hues in carpets, upholstery, art and accessories.

Believe it or not, I actually started my career doing contemporary design and used a lot of purple. In fact I used so much purple that I became known as Purple Perla. This season I may become known as Hot Pink Perla. Ms. Lichi is celebrating her incredible 30 years in the design business throughout 2014.

I do like to urge people to have fun with their interiors and adding punches of hot pink or purple is certainly a way to do that!

This may not be for everyone, cautions Ms. Lichi, who is most well-known for her classic, highly detailed luxury design. But vivid colors like hot pink create a happy ambiance that many people find cheerful and upbeat.

She adds, Interior design is always in sync with whats big in fashion, and pink is very popular with designers this season. Hot pink is a great color fun, fresh, bold, and with the right touch, it can brighten any home. I always encourage people to be adventurous with color and colorful accessories are a perfect way to do this.

SAN ANTONIO -- Paul Farias says he feels a little better about his chances now. The city had given Farias 48 hours to vacate his home, because they said it wasn't safe. An engineer Farias hired to inspect his house indicates it's not as bad as the city inspector said.

Farias saID he has been trying to make repairs but the city has been blocking his permit applications. The foundation needs work, as does the roof and some electrical wiring. But that work can not be done without permits.

The city says it will take the case before the Building Standards Board March 6 and let them make the final decision. Farias intends to take the engineers report with him and, if need be, the engineer himself. Farias said he just wants a little time to make the repairs.

The city said it notified Farias of the problems last June and he hasn't made the repairs yet. Things didn't start to move until the threat of eviction came.

Farias said the only reason they hadn't made the improvements was because of money.

Both sides will have an opportunity to make their case before the city board March 6. The board will then decide whether to allow Farias and his family to make the needed repairs to bring his home up to code, or whether to move forward with plans to have the home demolished.
