Construction workers under the aegis of Krishna District Building Workers Union staged a dharna in front of the Deputy Labour Commissioners office at Patamata on Bandar Road here demanding that the State Government should extend pension, health insurance and other welfare benefits to them.
Addressing the gathering on Monday, the union leaders said that there were 50 lakh construction workers in the State and many of them died while they were working. The deceased families were leading miserable lives as the Government was not implementing the welfare schemes properly.
The Building and Other Construction Workers Act, 1996, specified that the Government should extend pension, family health scheme and scholarships to children of construction workers, housing loans, financial assistance for purchasing necessary equipment, and unemployment allowance etc. The Government, however, had failed in extending these facilities to the construction workers, they said. The workers were obtaining loans at exorbitant interest rates for purchasing the tools and equipment. As the works were available for only five to six months, the workers were facing hardships in repaying the loans. The Government was supposed to pay unemployment allowance to meet their daily requirements.
The demands include hiking of ex-gratia to Rs. 5 lakh from Rs. 2 lakh for accidental deaths and to Rs. 2 lakh from existing Rs. 30,000 for natural deaths and refund of Rs. 458 crore diverted by the State Government to Welfare Board immediately.
Building Workers Union State President P. Narasimha Rao, city general secretary G. Achaiah, president Sk. Miravali, east zone-2 secretary T. Buchi Babu, rural mandal secretary Sivaji, treasurer Appa Rao and others were present.

Commercial real estate investors are also saying yes to Nashville, drawn by rising rents in the state capital and longtime hub of the country-music industry. Office and apartment sales in the area soared to records last year, combining for $1.7 billion in transactions and outperforming the U.S. average, according to Real Capital Analytics Inc.

Nashvilles in-migration of young people and pro-business climate bode well for above-average office-demand growth, Green Street said in a Dec. 4 note on Highwoods Properties Inc. (HIW), whose buying spree boosted its Nashville buildings to a value of $229 a square foot, pricier than any other market among the landlords holdings, including Atlanta at $180 a square foot.
Nashville was among the top three fastest-growing U.S. cities for most of 2013, Labor Department data show. Health cares preeminence includes 220,000 jobs, a $53,000 industry wage that exceeds the $39,000 area average and decades of wealth creation and thought leadership, Janet Miller, chief development officer for the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce, said in an interview at her downtown office.

When Stanford Carters furnace broke one brisk day in October, he didnt know where he was going to come up with the cash to fix it.
Carter, 64, of the East Side, spends more than three-quarters of his retirement benefits and pay from a part-time job as a barber on his monthly house payment and utilities.
That leaves the Vietnam War veteran with barely enough to cover food, gasoline and other necessities. The last thing Carter needed to worry about was a pricey repair to his modest 63-year-old house that has more than started showing its age.
Carter might still be without heat if a local agency hadnt directed him to the Franklin County Office on Agings minor-home-repair program. The group helped nearly 1,400 senior citizens last year, including 565 older than 75, so they could stay in their homes.
It has taken a lot off my mind, and I dont have to worry anymore, he said. Its given me peace of mind.
Providing minor home repairs is one of the easiest ways to keep older people living independently, experts say. However, demand for such programs often surpasses what groups are able to provide, and money remains limited.
The U.S. has at least 13 million low-income households of people age 50 or older living in unaffordable or inadequate housing, the AARP Foundation says.
For vulnerable older Americans, housing upkeep is a challenge to maintain, particularly in these tough economic times, the foundations president, Jo Ann Jenkins, said.
The foundation awarded $780,000 to four groups last year to repair and add safety features to 1,179 homes across the country, including some in Ohio, with the hope of showing other groups that the work can pay big dividends.
