HOUSE HUNTERS Can Dorian and Kennex defeat a killer home security system?
Fox
Welcome back, Humaniacs!
This week we have a killer "smart home," a band of pesky hackers, and Minka Kelly in a purple wig! Also, who's messing with Dorian's head? Let's find out!
Hey, remember how Rudy and Dorian were bunking together? Well, turns out Rudy is running tests on Dorian's processing core while our favorite DRN-droid is recharging. Dorian is understandably not so thrilled with Rudy poking around in his noggin, which Kennex compares to waking up to find that someone has given him a nice clean shave. "So if I shave you while you're unconscious, that would make you happy?," Dorian asks. (It's been a while since the writers threw a bone to Dorian/Kennex slash fiction authors.) What Rudy doesn't reveal is what he's seen inside Dorian's head -- a memory of the young bot playing with a toy train.
We cut to the home of Michael Bennett, who has a super fancy Synturion home security system. He greets his home security hologram, SAM, who looks like a slicker version of one of the MX androids. Michael and his wife Linda have been receiving death threats because a year ago their home security system malfunctioned and caused the death of a young trespasser named Aaron Kasdan. But thanks to their fancy smart home, they're the perfect picture of 2048 upper class bliss. Linda goes for a swim while SAM prepares Michael's (presumably daily) scotch. (Seriously, I have to get one of these smart home thingies.) SAM watches Linda while she swims and asks how the temperature of the water is. A little creepy, but nothing homicidal yet. Suddenly, a news report about Aaron's death appears on the TV. The cover on the pool closes, trapping Linda. When Michael tries to save his drowning wife, the home weapons system identifies him as hostile and shoots him.
The team arrives at the scene, and Dorian discovers that the home security system malfunctioned at the exact same time that it killed young Aaron Kasdan one year prior. Maldonado is too no-nonsense for coincidences and thinks that they have a homicide on their hands. Turns out someone hacked into the security system, but left no trace. Also, the Bennetts had been receiving a ton of death threats, so lots of suspects.
At Synturion, Kennex and Dorian meet another SAM, only this time he's an actual security android and not a hologram. Right before they meet with Peter Newsome, Synturion's counsel, and CEO Kay Stenson, Dorian gets a flash of the memory Rudy uncovered earlier. Mrs. Stenson got into home security because she was assaulted and wanted to help people feel safe. One group, called Anonymous, er, I mean, "Disrupt," has been particularly vocal in their attacks on Synturion. Kennex says maybe so many people are angry at Synturion because they remember the days when a kid jumping a fence would've been met with an angry shout and not a hail of gunfire. (If you're noticing some nods to the George Zimmerman case, well, you're not alone.)

While most homeowners realize the importance of having an alarm system, in terms of providing safety and security against intruders, part of the battle against intruders is also very dependent on thinking outside the box. Thieves and criminals are actually very experienced in most cases, and they have developed techniques that allow them to outsmart many homeowners. Its important homeowners be proactive against potential threats, and think from the standpoint of a burglar.
The team at AlarmSystemReport.com, a site that provides reviews of top alarm companies, including FrontPoint reviews, has put together a list of the most unlikely and unusual home security tips that many homeowners have never heard of or thought to do.
1.Homeowners should always be aware of what theyre saying while in public and on social media. Many people arent aware that the reason they become targeted by a criminal is because the criminal overheard or saw them say something that made them a good target. Criminals dont often just strike blindlythey do their research before attempting to rob a home.
2.Dont assume criminals only strike at nightin fact, this is often the opposite of reality. Most criminals like to strike during the day, when they know people are away at work and school. For homeowners who work at home, or stay at home during the day, its important to be vigilant during the hours of 8 and 5, and dont assume behavior isnt suspicious just because its not occurring at night.
3.A wireless home alarm system may be the best course of defense against a well-trained burglar, because they often know how to easily disable wired alarms. Consider upgrading a hard wired system to a wireless option, because its more difficult for a criminal to disable.
4.Dont leave anything broken or damaged, no matter how small it may seem. Not only can a broken window, door jamb or doorbell leave an opening for a burglar, but it also indicates the homeowners are not very engaged, making them an easier target.
5.Utilize the car alarm if necessary. Leaving a car parked outside or in the driveway can mean access to alarm systems that are unexpected. If a homeowner sees suspicious activity around their house, they can sound the car alarm from inside the home, and the noise is likely to deter a burglar pretty quickly. Burglars hate anything that draws attention to the situation.

Mark Emrick of Brandon is one of the 16 finalists on the reality show Canadas Handyman Challenge on HGTV.
Brandon will find out tonight if one of its own is handy enough to continue on the reality show "Canadas Handyman Challenge."
Mark Emrick, 48, is one of 16 finalists on the HGTV reality show after surviving elimination in the first round.
The firefighter instructor with the Manitoba Fire and Emergency Services College was initially picked as one of the top 10 from the Winnipeg crowd with a wooden treasure chest beer cooler with a trap door that hides four beer glasses.
The hitch: each contestant could only use a four-by-eight-foot sheet of plywood for their entry.
Emricks project clearly wowed the panel of celebrity judges Scott McGillivray of the show "Income Property," Bryan Baeumler of "Leave It to Bryan" and Paul Lafrance of "Decked Out."
"If you show up with a project thats built well and theres beer in it, youre in," Baeumler said during Emricks first appearance on the show.
During the Winnipeg episode, filmed at the Western Canada Aviation Museum, Emrick had to pass two other challenges to earn his finalist spot.
In the first challenge, Emrick and the other contestants had to build a sugar-bag-launching slingshot or catapult.

Fresh Patchmaker of the real-grass, disposable dog pottyoffers some helpful advice about taking care of a dog or puppy Valentine gift. Now that February 14 has passed, the real work begins in helping a Valentine pet successfully adjust to a new home. Unfortunately, pets that are gifts may be returned to shelters and pet stores if this transition process doesnt go smoothly.
The Fresh Patch Company notes that the safety of a new pet needs to be the first concern. Valentines day can leave behind a trail of things that, if eaten or chewed by a dog, can result in harm or death. These include chocolate, other sweets, alcohol, petals of some flowers, thorny rose stems, gift paper, ribbons, and ties. New owners are well-advised to dog-proof their homes, just as parents do for a child. In addition to the dangerous things left from Valentines day, there are year-round hazards, such as loose wires on the floor, which can be easily chewed by dogs. A good way to avoid problems is for owners to put their eyes at dog level and then walk through their homes looking for potential safety hazards, especially for mischievous puppies.
House-training a new Valentine pet, or any new pet, can be a special challenge. According to the Fresh Patch Company, a large percentage of their customers are new dog owners who want to train their pets on real grassnot on synthetic products such as pee pads and fake grass. A Company spokesperson says that dogs will make a natural connection between the real grass in Fresh Patch and the real grass outside the home. That association will make house-training easier. The Company points out that Fresh Patch is made with dirt-free hydroponic grass, which is super absorbent and lighter in weight than regular sod. Most customers who try Fresh Patch for house-training purposes continue their convenient delivery service after the training period ends. The reason is that they can avoid walking their dogs early in the morning, late at night, or in bad weather. In many parts of the country, this winter has been particularly hard on dogs and their owners, says a Fresh Patch Company spokesperson. Fresh Patch is a convenient way to cope with a dogs bathroom needs in snow, ice, and freezing cold, as well as other times when dog walking is not safe or possible.

Only a handful of stalls were at Sudbury market on Saturday as the bad weather keeps stall holders away.

Market traders in west Suffolk have thanked loyal customers for supporting them during the bad weather - but warned the heavy rain and wind is taking its toll.

On Saturday, Sudburys normally vibrant market of 30 stalls was reduced to six vans as traders with canopies decided it was too windy to set up. Over in Bury a reduced market went ahead minus the gazebos after a safety meeting between market officers and traders was held the night before.
The high winds of Saturday follow on from flooding the weekend before and torrential rain over the past weeks that has reduced custom.
Dan Ashdon, who runs Waters Edge Provisions on Sudbury market selling eggs, spices and dry goods, said he was a few hundred pounds down on what he normally takes at this time of year.
Today it has been too dangerous for the stall-holders to set up and last week people were preoccupied with the floods but we have very loyal customers who support the market whatever the weather - its the passing trade weve missed out on.
Fishmonger Dave Monro said he had his regulars - some he has been serving for 20 years - to thank for keeping him ticking over. Its been the second year that February has been bad - last year it was really cold and we had snow but we want to thank those customers who keep coming rain or shine, he said.
In Bury, fruit and veg trader, Martin Hart, said he was hopeful trade would pick up when the weather improves.
