Many hands mend fences after fire -

LAST weekend, local community groups, friends and family members volunteered their time to clear burnt fences in the Walpa, Finger Boards, Fernbank and Glenaladale area of East Gippsland, in preparation for private contractors to begin erecting boundary fences this week.
They were helping farmers affected by the Mt Ray-Glenaladale fire that swept through the communities on Sunday, February 9.
Jason Stephenson was clearing burnt fences last Saturday on his property at The Fingerboards, in preparation for a private contractor to begin erecting new fences on Monday.
He was assisted by a large group of family and friends, some who travelled from as far afield as Tostaree and others as close as Bairnsdale and Lindenow South.
Mr Stephenson lost all the pasture on his 202ha farm, 7km of boundary fencing, as well as internal fencing and, of his stock, 65 Dorper ewes were burnt or had to be destroyed in the fire's aftermath.
His remaining ewes and cows and calves are now on agistment.
Volunteers from the Mt Taylor rural fire brigade and friends were working last weekend to clear burnt fences on Geoff and Lyn Johnstons farm (see Stock & Land, February 13).
On John and Ruth Mortons farm, ex-residents and friends were clearing fences and cutting strainer and fence posts last weekend.
Teams have been working throughout this week to clear burnt fences in the district, as private fencing contractors begin work today.
Local farmers have donated hay and silage to help those whos properties were burnt out in the fire.

Verdict
Holywell finally got off the mark over fences at the fourth time of asking at Catterick and that should have given his confidence a boost. He was a very useful staying hurdler, finishing second in the Grade 1 Liverpool Hurdle at Aintree last season and winning the Pertemps Final at Cheltenham when Top Of The Range was tailed off. The latter blotted his copy book when unseating his rider at Musselburgh last time having won at Ascot on his chasing bow and may be better over shorter trips. VICTOR HEWGO is jumping fences relatively late in life but has taken to the new challenge like a duck to water. He had more in the tank when winning by eight lengths over course and distance last month and should be tough to beat in this. Firm Order has much more experience than his rivals but usually finds at least one too good.

Several Beaumont school district employees could be forced to repay salary they received while on leave if found guilty of crimes, though board trustees would have to pursue repayment.
Once before, trustees were unwilling to go after money to which the district had a claim.
In 2012, BISD contract electrician Calvin Walker forfeited $3.2 million in connection with a guilty plea to a federal misdemeanor charge of failure to file his taxes in a timely manner.
Trustees could have sought up to $2 million in restitution, but doing so would have meant declaring the district the victim of fraud. A board majority was unwilling to make that statement.
Former district finance director Devin McCraney, who faces a federal indictment on one count of conspiracy and 18 counts of fraud in the alleged theft of $4 million, has been on paid leave since November. He submitted his resignation last week, but it must be accepted by the board.
Naomi Lawrence-Lee, the district's purchasing agent, was placed on paid leave a month ago. She has not been charged with any crime.
Jessie Haynes, special assistant to the superintendent, has been on paid leave for six months following an altercation with a reporter and a school trustee at an August board meeting.
In all three cases, the district could at some point seek to recoup back pay from any or all of the three, but "there's nothing automatic about it," said Kevin O'Hanlon, an Austin attorney who served as an assistant attorney general and as general counsel for the Texas Education Agency.
BISD would have to seek it through litigation.

An inside look at construction work on Mount Allison's Purdy Crawford Centre for Arts.
Despite the snow and winter temperatures, construction of Mount Allisons Purdy Crawford Centre for the Arts is well on track to welcome its first students this September.
Passersby will notice recent changes in the facility including the installation of several windows, along with much activity happening inside the building.
We are installing window frames and windows, and the sandstone and interior block walls are nearing completion, says Ron Eickholt, project manager for the facility. And we are starting to install the drywall, which means we have started finishing individual spaces.
The electrical wiring has been started and finishing work such as flooring and paint is expected to begin in the spring. The move into the building will not happen overnight, but staff and faculty will begin the process by early July.
Home to the fine arts and drama programs, the 50,000-square-foot centre has been designed to create a stunning new presence at the northwest edge of campus. The centre includes contemporary art studios with facilities for painting, printmaking, sculpture, photography, and other media. A studio hall features reinforced floors, heightened ceilings, and controlled lighting.
Eickholt says that the buildings theatre has been specially designed for different types of productions, with sophisticated sound and lighting systems and flexible capacity. The theatre boasts telescopic seating for 84 people, with the potential to expand seating options for much larger audiences.
The building will house office and seminar spaces and an atrium that will have the capacity to hold receptions and social events, as well as a place for students to exhibit their work and meet to exchange ideas.
Drama and fine arts classrooms, theatre and rehearsal spaces, studios, and exhibition spaces are currently scattered across campus. The new centre will bring these spaces under one roof, inviting limitless creative opportunities for interaction between fine srts and drama students and faculty.
This centralized location has been designed to encourage experimentation and exchange, as well as provide opportunities to build a new kind of creative community transforming teaching, learning, and creative pursuits at Mount Allison.

Navasota ISD Plans $62M Bond Election -
February 19, 2014 by
Mr HomeBuilder
Navasota ISD Board of Trustees unanimously approved to call a $61,641,801 bond election this May.
The decision was made Monday evening, as a community committee made the recommendation based on major infrastructure needs throughout the district. Besides a need to improve infrastructure, the bond is an estimated 15-year solution to all campuses that are nearing capacity.
Superintendent Rory Gesch said, The top concerns are safety and security upgrade, infrastructure needs, technology needs and building capacity. Two propositions are included in the bond election.
Proposition I includes the following: High school and junior high additions and renovations, estimated to cost $26,818,440; maintenance upgrades $16,357,370; high school career and technology/fine arts $5,747,500; Navasota Intermediate $5,990,710; Webb Elementary $1,034,731; and Highpoint Elementary $1,821,050.
The most costly includes campus-wide classroom renovations at the high school and junior high school campuses.
Improvements would also include the addition of a common cafeteria and serving area that would link both campuses together, over 10 additional classrooms and an additional corridor, as well as interior science classroom renovations.
The common cafeteria is a bi-level, buffet style design that is used at larger high schools, as well as some college campuses.
During a meeting on Feb. 10, administrators said they visited campuses elsewhere and witnessed lunch lines moving pretty steadily since various foods are offered in different areas of the shared cafetorium.
Navasota Intermediate School improvements include classroom and rock gym renovations for an 18,400-square-foot classroom and admin area addition, refurbish existing rock gym, a 2,500-square-foot kitchen/cafeteria addition and serving line equipment, and new parking and driveway. The addition of 40 new parking spaces and driveway creates a drop-off loop between the current Intermediate building and Brule. Webb Elementary School site parking and playground improvements presented include the following: New parking to create an additional 132 spaces, driveway paving and playground improvements that include new playground equipment and canopy, and safety and security fencing; demolition of walls to create flex space and add windows.
Other security renovations include a reconfigured new entry, security entry vestibule, new offices and a new reception area.
