St. Louis, MO (PRWEB) February 21, 2014
Marcone Servicers Association just wrapped up its most successful event in the trade organization's 16 year history. Breaking previous years' attendance records, over 400 people convened in Las Vegas for the 2014 MSA Convention, a conference catered exclusively to those in the appliance service industry.
Professionals from across North America and every sector of the industry were represented at the gathering, including technicians, specialty trainers, small business owners, and major appliance manufacturers. The company's recent growth throughout Canada was evidenced by the several-fold increase in attendees from that country, as compared to past years. And agents from Electrolux Canada, Mabe, and Purolator ensured their servicers and customers had a chance to interface with these major Canadian brands. Indeed, networking was one of the foremost highlights of the week. Business owners met and spent time with their Marcone sales reps; technicians had opportunities to speak one-on-one with master trainers; and appliance manufacturers got personalized feedback from their customers. When asked what he found valuable about the event, one business owner remarked, "The face-to-face interaction is phenomenalit really is."
Along with traditional elements like vendor booths and seminars, the conference's details encouraged attendees to remember the importance of balancing personal wellbeing with business success in a holistic wayan unexpected but well-received message for the appliance service industry to which MSA is dedicated. The "Better Business, Better You" convention tagline guided the week's agenda, and it spotlighted Marcone's signature commitment to driving the industry by empowering individuals. Further, the overall driving theme behind MSA Conventions has long been "The Art of Service," a concept that focuses attention on the nuanced and talent-driven nature of what may appear to outsiders to be any other straightforward blue-collar industry. To be sure, the skill setthe artistryrequired for success in appliance repair is multi-faceted, incorporating niche technical expertise with a dynamic business sense and priority on customer relations.
Addressing these needs for the industry is the crux of the MSA Convention. So as with any professional conference, the draw for most attendees was the intensive education program available to them. And while courses are offered year-round through MSA training tours and online resources, this event was a one-stop shop for learning every critical skill to running an appliance service business. Classes covered the spectrum, from hands-on microwave repair training to dishwasher detergent chemistry, from social media marketing to integrating Quickbooks. Technicians, business owners, managers, and even attendees' spouses filled up classrooms to learn from experts in repair, technology, customer service, finance, marketing, and sales. Specialty training is the biggest incentive to join MSA, according to many members. "The training is fantastic. All the instructors are good, and so is the entire Marcone staff," said a technician asked about what he was enjoying most at the convention.
The second half of that "Better Business, Better You" theme meant attendees were immersed in reminders to focus on themselves as well as their work. The MSA Lounge provided a place for relaxation, rejuvenation, and recharging: free chair massages, an oxygen bar, mobile device charging stations, and a smoothie bar had attendees raving that Marcone "treated us like gold" and "took really good care of us." Of course, socializing and decompressing after long days of classes were not overlooked. A welcome reception with a view of the Las Vegas Strip from 50 stories upcomplete with live music, a magician, and psychicswas the talk of the week. And complimentary happy hours showcasing wines from around the world allowed an easygoing atmosphere for connecting with colleagues and developing new business ideas. Morning fitness classes, healthier lunch fare, and tip sheets on physical wellbeing all rounded out the "Better You" experience.
Feedback was resoundingly positive, with many calling the 2014 Convention the "best one yet" and commenting, "I haven't been to a really good convention like this for a long time." The event was one way for Marcone to reinforce the value of being part of MSA, reminding members about the myriad benefits available to them and opening up a forum for feedback, all while giving attendees the fun and training they came for in the first place. When asked, everyone from members to manufacturer reps said without hesitation that they'd be back for the next MSA Convention.
Marcone Servicers Association was founded in 1998 to serve the appliance repair industry. The organization is backed by Marcone Supply, the country's largest appliance parts distributor. Marcone was founded in 1932 in St. Louis, where it is still headquartered.

This is the Best-Dressed from our 80's Walk. Left to Right is: Leah Terrell, Kayla Bigham and Lisa Salmans
The great thing about our program is that every dollar raised from Walk for Kids Sake stays in our local communities. The money raised by our teams, walkers and corporate donors go to support our volunteers and our local children, said Melissa Carroll, local satellite manager. The walkers that turn out year after year and donors that donate each year make our program possible.
The money raised by teams was over 35% of our total! Carroll said. This year we challenged our local school campuses in Perryton, Spearman and Gruver to compete for the BIG-est Team and The Most Money raised team. Carroll goes on to say, Perryton Jr. High Circle of Friends team led by Angelica Rascon had 25 team members and raised $1377.00. This team wins both.
This year, we had several large teams and decided they should also be recognized. These team captains also worked very hard to build a great team and raise money for BBBS. They were: Debbie George, Laura Hernandez, Katie Krienke, Rhonda Merrick, Kim Swink and Starla Whiteley.
The top three individual money raisers won grand prizes. Parker Swinney was the top money raiser ($935); he won a $150 gift certificate to Scarlet Door Spa. Francis Aston raised the second largest amount ($575) and won a Yeti cooler. The third highest total was raised by Annette Dorman ($500); she won a Keurig Signature Brewer.
Walkers who raised at least $100 won a Big Brothers Big Sisters Acrylic Tumbler filled with lots of goodies including a gift card or gift certificate from a local business. They were: Sheila Barnes, Valerie Bartosiewicz, Pat Bilson, Cheryl Bullard, Dena Cator, Obed Chairez, Maegan Chisum, Kiki Connelly, Amanda Cowan, Chris Cowan, Janet Cummings, Lynn Crain, Carol Hayden, Jaci Hayden, Randie Hill, Charley Hoover, Sara Hoover, Kimberly Irwin, Barbara Johnson, Michael Lemke, Stephanie Lemke, Donna Mann, Chloe McGarraugh, Cole McGarraugh, Nick Olvera, Cyndi Pearson, Nerissa Rigdon, Lisa Salmons, Reola Smith, Joel Thompson, Shawn Thompson, Rita Tregellas, Elizabeth Turner, Allison Vyoral, Vance Vyoral, Lorrinda Watson, Kristi Williams and Denise Wilmeth.

Corporate sponsors made up the other 65% of our Walk, and we wouldnt have a Walk for Kids Sake without their support!
Corporate Sponsors donating $1000+ were: Badger, M&R Package Store and Tregellas Family Farms.
Sponsoring $500 were: Adobe Walls Gin, Bort Agency, Brandvik Pipe and Equipment, CJs Pizza, Connelly Farms, Courson Gas Consultants, Equity Exchange, First National Bank, First State Bank, FirstBank Southwest, Five Star Equipment, Graves Operating, Paula & Kevin McGarraugh, Lemon, Shearer, Phillips & Good, PC, Moore County Gin, Natural Gas Anadarko Perryton National Bank, Perryton Office Supply/Radio Shack, Phil Dollar Oilfield Service, Snider Motorsports, Terhune Flying Services, Texas Farm, The Pit Stop, United Supermarkets, Western Hot Oil, and Xcel Energy.

Greg Kloehn, right, who takes discarded trash and turns it into rolling shelters for homeless people in his West Oakland, Calif. neighborhood, greets "Wonder," a homeless woman who now lives in the shelter he built for her, Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2013. (D. Ross Cameron/Bay Area News Group)
OAKLAND, Calif. Gregory Kloehn can turn just about anything into a home.
The Oakland artist spends his summers in Brooklyn living in a trash bin he outfitted with granite countertops, hardwood floors, a rooftop deck, plumbing and a barbecue grill.
But his proudest creations are even cozier structures that he gives to homeless people in his neighborhood.
Kloehn's little homeless homes are about the size of a sofa, but they come with a pitched roof to keep out the rain and wheels so recipients can roll them around town.
So far Kloehn has built 10 of the tiny houses using mostly illegally dumped trash that piles up on the streets in a semi-industrial section of West Oakland. The foundation is usually discarded wood pallets to which Kloehn will add accouterments such as windows, a mirror and a cup holder. Several homes are insulated with discarded pizza delivery bags.
Wonder, a homeless woman Kloehn has known for several years, parked her new house on the sidewalk next to her old home, which consisted primarily of a tarp draped over a couch.
This is the best home I've had in five years, Wonder said as she opened the front door made from a discarded picnic table to reveal the pizza bag insulation. It gets real hot in here, she said.
All the homes have gotten rave reviews. They say this is just night and day, especially when it rains, Kloehn said. Once your mattress gets wet, it's just terrible.
Kloehn, a 43-year-old transplant from Denver, is a sculptor who got on a housing kick after building his five-unit live-work condominium complex from scratch.
